Got the album. The sequencer on 'Trials and tribulations' reminded me of 586/Blue monday, and Joy division get a name check on track 1 of disc 2. And apparently one of their videos is a throwback to Confusion?

LCD has been hyped to death...have to say they are better live than they are on record and if New Order and LCD were on stage together, LCD would wipe the floor with NO's lazy ass. They can recreat their mix of acoustic and electronic songs on stage and then extend them/jam the beats/guitar/melody bits, unlike New Order's preprogrammed, fucked up run though of their set.

the song that namechecks JD is called Losing My Edge and has been out for several years already..maybe 2?

Tribulations was a monster live. The energy in the crowd was above and beyond the wildest moments of the New Order show in Oakland.

FYI: I'm always wankerishly condescending, not just tonight. You have to admit, you're behind the curve when it comes to being excited about LCD Soundsystem. Did you hear Junior Boys yet? They stole a sample from Truth and virtually recreated the Subculture synth + drums for a section of a song on their album, Last Exit. Check it fool!

thanks for letting me know how 'behind the curve' I am. Didn't think my initial post smacked of excitement or any kind of "look I just discovered this new band everyone should hear" vibe, but whatever.

Right now that thats sorted I think i'll listen to Losing my Edge and think about how up to the curve I am. ;)

Interesting Fact: James Murphy loves Du The Du by ACR and i believe mimicked the drums at the end of LME to pay tribute to that song. I feel like i have the details slightly off but it's defo. Du The Du that he used but where and why i'm not 100% sure.

LCD are fantastic live. I've seen them twice; in Berlin before they became known and then in Amsterdam quite recently (April, was it? Motel Mozaique was the party). They kicked ass both times. And I got James Murphy's setlist from the Amsterdam gig! "Tribulations" was soooo much better live than it was on record, surprisingly. "Movement" is my favourite track, nice video, too.

Americans creating an 'atmosphere' at a live event? Surely not?!

When the band are worth a shit live, Americans can certainly create an atmosphere. The sound was mixed perfectly and the band fucking rocked every song they played. New Order on the other hand...You have to be drunk/wasted and not really paying attention to enjoy them.

there is a direct correlation to the performance/energy of the band to the excitement of the crowd. if newOrder were capable of performing a great set with loads of energy, then the crowd would match their energy...as it is, New Order perform like a 3rd rate Vegas act with their preprogrammed sounds, prewritten banter and inability to play without completely fucking up nearly every song.

new order have always been hit or miss live. usually miss. don't worry about it. and al jarvis, you ain't ever been to america, have you, kid? come over here. "atmosphere"...

do you know how much ecstacy costs over here? it is so prohibitively expensive that i doubt that many people are doing it. now in spain, those crabcakes were probably on so much speed and e that they either had to dance, or sit there smelling their (very bad smelling) junkie selves. i know that when i was in europe, i was doing e 6 nights a week, just because it was so damn cheap (and i was so young). it's also usually over better clubbing quality.

my theory: better, cheaper, more plentiful drugs. now go see animal collective in freakin spain...

btw- spain is a beautiful place, i just made up the term "crabcakes" (i think) and i'm not saying the spanish stink (although some do), i'm saying that junkies stink, and not that all spanish are junkies (although some are). so there.

Hmmmmm. I got this album a few weeks back, and remember it being a total letdown.

I suppose I was expecting a bit much, and only gave it 3 end-end listens. I'll give it another couple of spins.

Rule number one of Music making: Dont sample Kraftwerk - you are going to look comparatively shit.

there are only about 6 good LCD songs in total but live, they all rock.

the difference Al, is that while everyone was excited to see newOrder and their experiences were good, the band simply cannot produce any energy or atmosphere on stage with the exception of Hooky and you have to admit, at his age, his whole bass-god pose is getting worn out and a bit ridiculous. i'd rather see NO than LCD anyday but you're wrong in your blanket statement that the USA cannot create atmosphere at a gig. perhaps you need to consider the band playing and not the audience as the main factor in atmosphere and energy at a show.

i saw The The and James at Tipitina's in New Orleans, two bands that can actually play live, and the walls were sweating along with everybody in the place. Talk about energy/atmosphere. The emotional impact/memories flooding back etc. is the only thing that makes a New Order show so enthralling, certainly not their stage presence or performance.
