I was wondering....how would you guys reply to a U2 fan who also casually listends to New Order, who came up to you and said how much they think U2 is better than New Order? What kinds of argument would put up that would perhaps persuay them into thinking New Order is indeed, the suprior band? Do you feel that THEY FEEL that Edge's guitar playing is the deciding factor that makes U2's music superior to NO's? How would you counter that argument? What if that person said things like....

"Dude...have you HEARD Bono's voice compared to Bernard Sumner's voice? There's like nooooooooo cumparision dude! That Bernard guy sounds like a fag compared to Bono! Bono's voice SCREAMS coolness!!! Vertigo 4 Lyfe ma nizzle!"

....How would you respond to someone that made that statement?

My response would be as follows: :spit:

I'd be glad I ran into someone who listens to two decent bands, especially considering what garbage so many folks listen to these days.

U2 is a decent band. They have put out like 10 times as many songs as New Order, so of course they have more clunkers, and more hits...

Why piss on U2? it is a small world, with many bad bad bad bad bad bad bands... U2 is not a worry.

And, hey, whatever. Not everyone likes New Order. Who cares?

I second all of that.

I usually tell my roommate to fuck off when he says something like that.

  1. Barney may not have a better voice, but at least he isn't singing from his head up his own ass.

  2. Bongo's ego needs to be bombed like a small Arab nation of your choosing.

  3. U2 sucks balls musically, esp. since 1985 or so. They have maybe a dozen good songs and the rest are shit.

  4. If it weren't for Joy Division, who would U2 be able to rip off?

Violently

I'd have to second that, although I'd probably only laugh out loud.

According to the indie hipsters, New Order is just a 'shallow electronica group anyways'.

I'd rather spend money on music that's imminently enjoyable and catchy than a bunch of high-falootin' dickery that "you've gotta listen to the notes they're not playing!" to 'appreciate'. Bullshit, JD was artrock postpunk as well but you didn't need to be a poet laureate to enjoy Transmission or Isolation.

U2's new CD is pretty good. I never liked them that much before ... but i have been downloading some of their older stuff and it's quite good as far as songs go. Bono, the rock star, is annoying ...and has an inflated ego, but i'd rather watch him on the telly than the likes of Justin Limperdick.

As far as comparing the bands it's hard to say. They come from the same 'punk' roots, so in that sense they may have certain similar sensibilities. Musically, U2 as 'rock' musicians, in "by-the-book" rock standards, are perhaps technically 'better' than New Order. But IMHO i never cared about by-the-book music and 'ohh...ahhh' guitar licks.

U2 are a rock band in the classic sense and are proud of it. New Order are definately not...that's why we love them. New Order redefined a musical style and attitude that was very much punk. The "who gives a shit and lets leave the sequencers on instead of doing a fuckin encore..." attitude, resulted in a classic track that will be remembered to have changed the face of dance music and influence a whole generation of bands. U2 WILL NEVER HAVE THAT NO MATTER HOW HARD THEY TRY....AND NEW ORDER ACHIEVED IT WITHOUT TYRING!

Effortless beauty born from mistakes...perfect imperfection...that's how I describe New Order. A U2 fan wouldn NOT get that because they are more easily impressed by the Edge's (recycled) guitar, Bono's stage 'presence', as well as his recent media friendly humanitarian efforts.

Although it's hard for me to be impartial, I'd have to say that New Order and U2 are two very different bands because they have members with very different personalitites and musical/social goals. It's almost like comparing apples to oranges: Bono is a media whore, while New Order have traditionally chose to avoid interviews completely (Imagine Bernard Sumner on Oprah...that would NEVER happen, no matter how just the cause...it's just not his style). U2's music is stadium crowd-pleaser rock that has not evolved much since their early days, (I woud have to say though, that I do appreciate the lyrics and sentiments of some of their songs). In comparison New Orders music is slightly more varied and experimental, hence stylistically harder to categorize. New Order and U2 are both great bands in their own right...and share similar musical roots and (to some extent) attitiude. BUT what is more appealing and respectable to me is how New Order overcame obstacles and managed to conquer and fuse more than one style of music (from post punk to rock to dance/electronic)with more style and humility than Bono will ever dream of.

I better do not respond to people who think U2 is better than NO.

Don't get me wrong - I have U2-CDs (the boys used to be good back then)... Bono is getting too sanctimonious for me (it began to bother me at the first Live Aid)... The Egde is always playing the same two or three chords on his guitar and the other two... Well they're there, too. OK they made some great songs through the years, but these days I can't take them seriously anymore.

NO are still the likeable guys from next door. They don't need great gestures, they just want to make music that is heard. They don't want to be canonised like Bono. And most important: Quality comes for quantity.

I would say to those people that it's true, U2 are a better group than New Order.

I know many people might not agree, but we're still talking about the best group of the 80's and 90's here... and I don't mind if people flame me for this.

They put out more album, toured a LOT more, experimented with stuff like Passengers, have serious great stages when seen live...

People might not like Bono for what he his, but let's face it, he is a superstar that could have gone solo a long time ago, and stick to his mates.

But, I'd say to them the following, New Order had (yeah, HAD) greater potential, unfortunatly, they blow it when they started solo projects in 1990 and "split" in 1993, but maybe it's also because they were indie...

It's hard for me, because we're talking about 2 of my favorite bands here... I can find crap songs on most U2 albums, I can't say the same about New Order.. nobody can play the bass like Hooky, but U2 did manage to remain popular to the youth in each decades which is kind of amazing...

Overall, U2 are a better band for their fans than New Order are, however musically, it can be debated, but then again, it's personal tastes... I prefer New Order's music, but that doesn't mean that's the case of everybody, and I'm willing to accept this fact :D

I couldn't agree more.

They both have drumming legends They both have a musician lauded for his own unique style (Hooky/Edge) They both have a singer who can be embarrasing (Bernard for some lyrics & BAD singing / bono for some lyrics & being Bono) They both have a fourth member in the group(!)

and, they have both written some of the most instantly recognisable tracks in the last 30 years.

There's room for both,

But I prefer NEWorder:thumb: :music: :tank:

well well said. and Spotnick as usual makes serious sense.

why do we need to have a post to bash U2?

clearly, as we all post here more than at the U2 forum (whatever it is - hell, they probably have like 10 of em) - so we all like New Order here.

But there is really not much to DISLIKE about U2. You say Bono has a huge ego? Well, compared to other stars at his level, what has he done WRONG? He is pretty much the perfect gentleman, and hard to get upset about that.

They make good music. Better than 99% of the crap out there.

and whoever said U2 has not influenced any other bands? bullshti. evidence? I bet U2 has influenced more bands than New Order just based on wider exposure.

Now, it isn't 'cool' to like U2. So what?

U2 is four guys who CARE about music, not fandom, not stardom, not the money... they have never been about big rockstar egos. They put effort into their music, and have the sense to know Joy Division was a Great Band. I guess, as a musician, I have always respected them, even though it isn't 'cool' to admit in those type of AJ Wells circles where the only good bands are the ones that only you have heard of....

Whatever. If you were Bono, wouldn't you be a bit pretentious? Might it not TAKE a bit of pretension and ego to do what he has done? Sure, John Lennon had an ego too. And so does Peter Hook. But ego alone is not evil. And last time I checked, Bono never made an ass out of himself, never used his position for bullshit purposes. Never uses his presence to cash in or get girls or sell product.

So, what the hell? Here is a band, that in the huge universe of music, is really in the same neighborhood as New Order. Why piss on them?

Let's use our vitriol against bands like Avril punkster Lavigne, Britney Spears and Nsync, please.

Well said.

I have a serious respect for U2 for lasting so long without losing it... can anybody name a band from the 80's who is still as popular as they were back then???

Not much is it?

i would say everyone is entitled to their opinion.

on a seperate note, a friend of mine is a huge U2 and casual NO fan, and I when I explained to him how moving it was to me to see Barney sing JD songs, I used U2 as an example, I said imagine if Bono committed suicide, and you saw the edge singing songs from boy, or war, and it really put the whole JD/NO thing in perspective for him and gave him a new appreciation for them. :)

At least he actually tries to do some good and make a difference in the world. I don't get this whole mindset that says "Celebrities shouldn't have an opinion on anything". Why shouldn't they?

So I went to the European Commission's official website this morning, and whose photo is on the home page?

Of course, Bono. Who else?

And the main headline:

European Commission President to appeal, with Bono, to put the EU on track to double development aid

Wherever the guy's heart is, there really is risk of a backlash; as in, can anyone in Europe do anything without fucking Bono involved?

"Bono, Rest of Europe Suffer Heat Wave"

If you had the possibility to make the world a better place (in your own opinion of course) by using your celebrity, you would probably do it too.

But I really loved when U2 were in the Simpsons and when Bono started to talk about politics and you see the rest of the bands saying "oh no, here we go again"...

are U2 great? no, they know how to market themselves and they do have some good songs, personally i like a bit of u-2 , the only album i like start to finish is unforgettable fire, and a few songs here and there, but probably nothing after 1988.

as for new order their work , seems a little more thought out has a lot more integrity, they just made their music, didnt worry (or go on and on and on) about third world debt or nelson mandella or they "Faith" in a higher power. i want to hear music, not have Bono's Views Shoved down my throat, he does make Neworderstory though he is such a phony Nitwit that its comical

This says it all for me... had NO been on Island or another "independant" subsidiary with a marketing department????? Personally it's JD all the way with NO a very close second and to parphrase AHW...... "Bono's performance at Live Aid was superb but Ian's would have been even better"

wait a second.

let me see if you guys can follow this:

A band makes good music that many people like.

Thus, the media report on them.

Thus, anything that Bono says get published.

Now, you don't have to read about them! How is Bono 'shoving his views down your throat'???

I guess to be a proper musician, you are supposed to be completely apolitical and hide away from the media?

So, is New Order doing benefit concerts and Vietnam, etc etc, 'shoving their views down your throat'???

Look, U2 are not more popular because they have 'better marketing' - their music just naturally appeals to more people. Which isn't our concern. Whatever.

But you guys trying to say Bono is forcing his morality and political values down your throats need to chill. That is ridiculous.

Bono will be able to look at himself in the mirror at age 80 and be proud. Not all rockstars can say that. Especially the majority who would rather be coked up screwing bimbos all day in their mansions hiding from the press....

Bono has had a positive effect on our globe more than YOU will ever have. So cut the guy some slack. He is just a musician who got lucky and connected with the masses through his music.

Your jealousy is readily apparent.

Wait a minute there, this means you DON'T like Achtung Baby??? :jawdrop:

This is surely in my own personal top 5 that's for sure! I don't think there is a single bad song on that one, even Zoo Station is good :evil4:

Can't say the same about Zooropa though, but that was experimental...

I've got nothing against U2 as musicians - as others have said, everyone's entitled to their opinions. I've even got the first 5 U2 albums on vinyl and they're still okay to listen to occasionally. I don't really like their music nowadays (except vertigo :skeptic: )

However, if someone said that they thought that U2 were better than New Order, I'd accept it, but show them the recording of New order's TOTP interview where they take the piss out of Bongo - setting himself up as a Jesus figure - the guy IS a twat, but possibly a well intentioned twat.

It just seems that with fame, money and fans that some people tend to lose the plot a bit - Michael Jackson, Liam & Noel Gallagher and of course, Bongo.

I don't care - he's not really made any impact on MY life.

Joy Division and New Order, on the other hand, HAVE
