They both have drumming legends
They both have a musician lauded for his own unique style (Hooky/Edge)
They both have a singer who can be embarrasing (Bernard for some lyrics & BAD singing / bono for some lyrics & being Bono)
They both have a fourth member in the group(!)
and, they have both written some of the most instantly recognisable tracks in the last 30 years.
There's room for both,
But I prefer NEWorder

well well said. and Spotnick as usual makes serious sense.
why do we need to have a post to bash U2?
clearly, as we all post here more than at the U2 forum (whatever it is - hell, they probably have like 10 of em) - so we all like New Order here.
But there is really not much to DISLIKE about U2. You say Bono has a huge ego? Well, compared to other stars at his level, what has he done WRONG? He is pretty much the perfect gentleman, and hard to get upset about that.
They make good music. Better than 99% of the crap out there.
and whoever said U2 has not influenced any other bands? bullshti. evidence? I bet U2 has influenced more bands than New Order just based on wider exposure.
Now, it isn't 'cool' to like U2. So what?
U2 is four guys who CARE about music, not fandom, not stardom, not the money... they have never been about big rockstar egos. They put effort into their music, and have the sense to know Joy Division was a Great Band. I guess, as a musician, I have always respected them, even though it isn't 'cool' to admit in those type of AJ Wells circles where the only good bands are the ones that only you have heard of....
Whatever. If you were Bono, wouldn't you be a bit pretentious? Might it not TAKE a bit of pretension and ego to do what he has done? Sure, John Lennon had an ego too. And so does Peter Hook. But ego alone is not evil. And last time I checked, Bono never made an ass out of himself, never used his position for bullshit purposes. Never uses his presence to cash in or get girls or sell product.
So, what the hell? Here is a band, that in the huge universe of music, is really in the same neighborhood as New Order. Why piss on them?
Let's use our vitriol against bands like Avril punkster Lavigne, Britney Spears and Nsync, please.
