Yup, american. Fecking right about the Stone Roses. Best debut album of all time. Quite like The Clash but cannae believe they got in the top 10. Overrated big style.

talk about overrated. Nirvana as number 5. they can't be serious. i hate nirvana and i openly riddicule kids i see in Seattle wearing Kurt/nirvana t-shirts. bunch of garbage processed through a distortion pedal. absolute shit. maybe 50th...maybe. they only released 3 studio albums right? their greatest hits could fill up one whole 45rpm 7" with room for a bonus track. i hate america and i hate the little tossers who listen to nirvana/pearljam/soundgarden etc...neworder should have been top ten but the mainstream US media has not fully realized the importance of the band nor have they realized the future of music lies deep within the underground and it won't be made with guitar/bass/drum. rock is dead, let it die.

alright, Spin totally sucks. They list Blue Lines as the Classic Massive Attack record but i disagree (and we all know that my opinion is the one that counts!) Blue Lines is the album people tell you they like best but it's clearly Protection that does the magic tricks. Blue Lines may have been a catalyst for that sound but Protection is the better album. Nothing like playing Protection and No Protection back to back (except playing them front to back)

Right you are Brian about the Blue Lines/Protection debate. Spin bites a lot of of the time, but they do have their moments (I glanced at the current issue on the newstand, and this 'list' issue is definitely not one of their best moments). Worse yet, Kiss was on the cover I saw and they were #32. Don't know if they printed up issue covers for each of the artists listed, but they will probably succeed in reaching the meatheads out my way by doing so.

My question is: Where did Limp Biscuit place? :D

I would have to disagree with Nirvana, Radiohead, and Sonic Youth being in front of New order. New Order deserves to be at least in hte top 20. Just because they were one of the bands to pave the way for dance music as it is today. Spin magazine just proved how shitty of a magazine it really is with Nirvana being in the top 50 let alone #5? Please! Can I get an AMEN!

In my book, while Protection may stand as the more polished and consistent work, Blue Lines has some highs that remain unassailed as Massive Attack peaks. Unfinished Sympathy and Safe From Harm to a lesser extent, are unparalleled. Plus Blue Lines set the agenda and has a raw quality about it that lends it soul. There's a comparison to be drawn to Low Life in that respect. And for a further NewOrder link, surely Barney was listening to BL when he wrote Special.

Agreed that you can dismiss the Spin list as an American-centric load of carp. The Bad Brains at #38? What the feck.

I know how hard it is to maintain a pure musical appreciation when living in the south. You get sucked in to the songs they beat to death on the radio and then every other mullet wearing truck driving Racist moron listens to Nirvana/Soundgarden so there really is no escaping that Shit. With the passing of time, you will realize your mistakes (listening to Soundgarden, buying your roommate the Brittney CD, and not remembering Perfect Kiss from Starplex) and move on.

Please Do Not Buy Spin Magazine. Or Rolling Stone.

Actually Jeff, Nirvana did not come in and shake up the status quo. The media (MTV&Rolling Stone) put them on a pedastal and made them godlike. No one i know "discoverd" Nirvana when sub-pop put out Bleach. They all jumped on the bandwagon when MTV started showing Smells Like...a million times a day and radio stations across the country had it on repeat. It was a created situation that has fuk-all to do with talent and good music. It's all about marketing and money. NewOrder have done so much more for music and in return they get nothing. If their record company wanted, they could have Turn My Way playing on every rock station in America multiple times a day with a video on heavy rotation at MTV but that's not the way neworder make fans. Nirvana were lucky - not good. Straight forward rock thats all they did.

Spin is a total piece of crap. I do agree that the Beatles should be number one, but you are all correct that they are missing several bands that have made big impacts, while they have others on that list that are pure shite. I can't believe the Stone Roses were not on the list.

Although many of you would not agree with me, I firmly believe that Oasis deserves to be on that list. No one can deny that in the mid-nineties they brought British rock back on the map, and was for a time a worldwide phenomenon. When was the last time a band made it on the cover of TIME magazine? They were more popular then the majority of the bands on that stupid list. Whether you like them or not, no one can deny that they were huge.

Stands waiting to be flamed, but I have always thought The Stone Roses were vastly overrated. Half a dozen good songs and fuck all else, certainly not one of the best acts of all time !

slops, shugster, i agree with you both. at one time i was quite a fan of the stone roses but in attempting to be objective about it (if thats possible) i reckon their contribution has been blown way out of proportion. theyre treated like indie-deities but were they really that musically significant? hardly a truky seminal band ala jd. It just baffles me that the Stone Roses are so revered by the "rock elite" as revolutionary, while loads of good British bands of the same period or slightly later get a bit of a shaft in favor of the Stone's "enlightened" (ie they felt the funk, man, albeit not well enough to actually have any resemblance to funkiness) dadrock. debut lp still had some good tunes mind.

Stone Roses touched greatness albiet for only a short while, the two singles released after the first album both sides of the 12" versions are fantastic what do you mean not funky???????? Fookin hell has anybody banged the drums as funkily as Alan Wren since? I doubt it One Love possibly the greatest record of all time is romoured to have a 20 minute version and the 12" version is already sublime. IMO the last time rock music was relevant was these cats.

Could you be a little less cryptic? You said you were originally a fan earlier, do you have the One Love 12"? I think I've mentioned already when I saw them (Spike Island) they were crap, and from 30 yards away from the stage I couldn't smell them but I can feel the funk.
