I apologize in advance to the veterans, cause I know this must have been asked a billion times. Alas, without the search working, I am forced to asked. Aside from the hits, I am pretty unfamiliar with Joy Division tracks. So I've been listening to Heart and Soul like crazy the past couple of weeks. I have a love hate relationship with Ian's vocals. Sometimes they just really piss me off and I long for barney singing, but then New Dawn Fades comes on and his singing sends chills down my spine and really sticks with you long after the song has ended.

So I got to wondering if he ever sang Ceremony or In a Lonely Place, and if these recordings exist anywhere.

Also, are there any other "Ian" songs that were recorded by Barney in the studio?

there's a live version of ceremony on Still as well.

Was listening to the JD ones the other day, and wondering.....how the hell did Barney get THOSE lyrics....was it REALLY an EQ or did he just pull them out of his hole.

regardless of where the lyrics were pulled from, one of my all time favorite songs lyrically :)

The story is that the band was working on the music and ian bopped in between suicides and sang. They used a shitty tape recorder for the session. Barney had to run it through a eq to transcribe the lyrics and almost had a cow during IALP since it described Ian's death.

Joy Division's performance of Ceremony on Still is incomplete. The only thing you hear Ian sing is the chorus.

I always though of IALP being Ian's swansong. Just sounds like a man on the edge, :dead:

I bought Still for the version of Ceremony and to this day it is my favourite live song performed by JD. There is a desperation to that live (debut) performance of it which stuns me.

Now i might be retarted, but ceremony is sung by curtis on substance? Also in deborah curtis book, the lyrics for ceremony pretty match up the version we all know.

Thats barney on Substance, the Substance Version or Ceremoney is Different from the Original Single Version of Ceremoney, Which Barney sang as well. as for the lyrics yeah d.curtis' book does have the lyrics,, but in NOStory Barney says they had to eq rehearsal tapes to get the lyrics, i dunno maybe she discovered the lyrics later?

I'm sure you know this Frank, but for those (few) who don't the original version of Ceremony features Barney, Hooky and Steven, the second version features the aformentioned plus Gillian on synth, God bless her. :bow2:

yes i know the 1st version was w/o gillian then they made one with her not long after , but then wasnt it re-recorded for substance, ala Temptation and Confusion, but for Master Tape Reasons? or am i wrong on that?

did hooky channel the spirit of curtis on dreams never ends. The vocals and lyrics seem eerily reminiscent of the late curtiss.

Is there a version of Curtis singing IALP with the last verse? Hooky said it was jarring to hear him singing about hanging, but the H&S version misses out this. Was it for taste or doesn't it exist, any ideas?

They cut that line out for the box Set, only Hooky has a copy of that, so rumor has it

I didn't say I haven't got discs 3 and 4. Just listening to the discs in order until they are commited to memory before moving on. That's all.
