What would YOU do?

so I'm rippin a couple of gigs to mp3. And while I'm copying one to the fileserver, the transfer stalls. Brother lands down 5 mins later to tell me one of the HD's in the server just died. uh oh! So bro rushes off, to get an old drive the same from his shop, and drop it's board into the dead one.

Against all logic and reason....it worked....the drive spun up....and I began to breathe again.

Why had I been shakey...well the drive that failed contained not only all the mp3's every made from slightlynarrow soundsystem tapes....but also my entire NO collection....albums, gigs.....video even.

SO THE POLL QUESTION You're living on borrowed time getting data from a HD that can die again at any second.

What do you copy first.... Your own life's work? or All your NO stuff.

based on my own experience of disks going, I get a few of my own files off stuff, start the New Order stuff copying, then go get the dry ice...

Had to move FIFTY GIGS off a Gateway with a 10Mbit network connection when its RAID array started getting an over heating HDD.... literally took the disk out, sealed it in plastic bag with the ribbon coming out, masking taped the ribbon, and cooled the HDD with dry ice (it was in a university lab...) Got everything off the machine and onto a box of DDS tapes.

Oh, and 'drops its board into the old one' - its a Matrox Diamondmax, right? Has to be... should last another year on the replacement IDE board...

Bingo! diamondmax60 I assume other drives are trickier to deal with? Scared me, I have 3 of them in my boxen. Bro ran a smart Diagnostic on it and it said "outside thermal tolerance....place your head between your legs etc etc", he was just about to shove another fan in when the thing died.

The first ones were good cos they were Quantumn fireballs with Quantumn scribbled out and Maxtor written in in crayon. Downward spiral it seems. I think I'm left with fujitsu as the only brand that hasn't gone pop in my face.

Oh yeah...I saved NEW ORDER first...I can always write more of OUR shite :)

Nope, I guessed as they're the only drives to fail like that...

Diamondmax+9's were the last good Maxtor disks. After that they dropped the warranty and started making crap...

They're just known for allowing you to change the IDE board safely in that case.
