Best idea here is to listen to Movement, many songs written in a similar vein to JD, even borrowing riffs and drum patterns (check out the ICB bass or the Chosen Time drum pattern). Truth and Doubts Even Here could easily have been JD songs, as could Dreams Never End. JD had evolved so quickly from the Warsaw days to Unknown Pleasures thru to Closer, with "different feelings and sounds" (sorry :)), and with that fast a learning and development curve, new musical areas were a logical progression. "As You Said" or whatever it's called hinted at a programmed experiment. I have no doubt that JD would have moved along very similar musical lines even if Curtis had not chosen his time, after all Curtis didn't wrote the music, just acted as an internal quality control on music !!

I think they were headed in the direction of Blue Monday, mainly because of Ian's influence. Barney said as much when he talked about Ian playing Kraftwerk records. Would we have had New Order? That's a little trickier, seeing as I can't imagine them changing their name without the catalyst of one member leaving.

and would we have ever got to experiance the full force of Barney's priceless yet ever so slightly in(s)ane lyrics i wonder..?

I can't picture Ian Curtis doing the corgi (i.e. Barney's new dance routine) with a pot belly singing to Bizarre Love Tangle can you? ... I mean, it would be great but I always imagined him to be in a trenchcoat down to beneath his hob-nail boots with a cigarette hanging from his nose mumbling prior to a fit. Which would have gone down well at Reading '98.

World, The Price of Eggs featuring Ian Curtis on vocals ... oh no. Surely Curtis would have stopped at Blue MoonDay and said hey, let's not get too carried away, wheel Hooky back in and plug the drums in again.

We'd never have had Every Little Counts then though, and it would have been Pride of the Reich rather than Shame of the Nation !!

Barney would never have become a lyricist if ian hadn't popped his clogs. On the plus side that would have meant no 'Slow Jam'.

ian wasnt a well boy though was he? even if hed lived he may not have been able to carry on. jd may have agreed to call it a day and we may never have had No..ill stop now, i dont like where this is heading...

I think joy division would have evolved into their electronic sound, but they wouldn't have lasted as long as new order has. i don't know, there's something that tells me that they would've broken up in the mid-80s and fade into obscurity.

Dunno about the obscurity bit, but I would certainly agree that the electronic sound would have happened at about the same rate of progress as it did as New Order.

yep, i think so, but would have been interesting to see Ian do Confusion

Electronic sound wouldn't come so fast in JD sound as NO did. NO wanted to sound different from JD so they needed to change faster their style to avoid pressures.This was the most obvious and easiest way to turn. Ian didn't write music but he showed how to sound fantastic.

ian and martin hannet would've become drinking buddies...

i think joy division would have gone on a similar path as the cure. mixing the electronics with the drums, bass, guitars, sometimes club freindly dancey but overall still very gloom orientated. new order would have maybe been a side project. the thing with electronic music for me is mixing bouncy vocals with the music. imagine ian singing bizzare love traingle. i love joy division for their raw masterful music and ians soul touching lyrics, the idea of them doing blt or confusion just sounds too weird.ians voice would have been way out of place. we should all thank god new order came to be new order after joy division, and not something like the doors of the 21st century or the foo fighters after nirvana.
