Why?

Because they love this band despite the musicians being older and greyer and fatter than most hip 20 year old bands.....

Thus, if you are a teen or early 20 fan of New Order, you are the type of person who puts music first, before pretentious appearance crap.

I got into New Order in the mid-80s, and admit to being a bit shallow back then, DID care about appearances to a degree, which looking back was pretty silly. Fortunately, New Order didn't disappoint, were quite stylin in an alt.indie type way.

I wonder if I would have been cool enough to at age 18 seen the worth of New Order in 2005... I might have passed them up for being 'too old' and instead followed Bravery or something.

Anyway, just my roundabout way of saying how amazingly cool you younger new order fans are. very smart people. I wish I was more like that when I was younger...

(p.s. sorry if this post is a bit sentimental or uncool, but I just had to emote this morning on this...)

Don't be daft! That would have meant listening to the fat old men still hanging round (on?) then, remember Genesis, Status Quo, Rolling Stones etc.

also us fat old farts didnt NECESSARILY get into early NewOrder because they were fashionable. (were they ever fashionable?)

My gig: hard rock in early 70's, evolved to punk, new wave, and ska by 80. Heard Blue Monday, very loud, in a record store when it was new, in DC. Was WIPED OUT by the drum and synth sound.. and I never went back...a new era for me.

Wasnt being fashionable, ... just got addicted to a band that was continually (albeit slowly) putting out new stuff I could sink my teeth into. I thank god their still doin it, and I guess Im grateful for the youngins,...continued record sales probly equates to further survival for the band.

I'm 18. Got into NO about a year ago. If it wasn't for me downloading True Faith by accident I wouldn't be into New Order. After hearing True Faith a few times I just thought there's something really chilling about the song, the atmosphere of the song does something to you, and the chords are amazing. So I thought i'd take a listen to a few of their other songs, and I liked em. So now I have bought the albums and have been into them for about a year now, must tape every TV appearance, and they dont look that bad for 50 actually.

I'm not interested in image, what's the point when there's a decent image when the music's shit. NO's dont give a... image was great back in the 80s though.

I'm 20 got into new order 2 years ago via Joy Division, I now prefer NO, they also made me appreciate dance music which I didn't care about before. I think they were cool in the lowlife era (As seen on Pfd) but still thats just my idea of cool, nobody elses (which could even be cool in itself). Older fans should count themselves lucky if they saw New Order during their peak, when the setlists were unpredictable filled with album tracks and b sides.

We're at different ends of this age thing so lets both spare a thought for those just too young for the eighties gigs but are now way past 18 - they lose on both counts.

I never cared about image, especially with New Order. After hearing "Crystal" on the radio and listening to Blue Monday, I didn't need an image because NO created such awesome dance music. However, when NO were performing on Jimmy Kimmel, my roommate let me watch the performance on his TV. He laughed right through it - not because of the music, but because of their looks. He took one look at Barney doing Krafty and said, "Man, that guy's a dork." "But what about the song?" I said. "It's alright," he said, "but it's not a good choice for a single."

It's not like they were the epitome of cool back in 85 when I got into them. They were never on all the cool pop shows or in the cool pop mags. If anything they were less cool(in the media darling sense) then than now, I mean now they do all the right shows and the like, they are part of the pop scene now, which they never were before they had a record deal.

Of course all of the above dpes not negate your valid point about young 'uns getting into old bezzers.

Iwas in my mid 20's before I could accept anything older than JD...as you get older your ears grow up.

I sometimes wonder if I'm the only person who likes over complex stuff like Zappa and Gong, the art of noise and king Crimson, awful post punk rot like NO and orbital, and over the top djtastic insanities like The Orb. Mind you looking at that list , there's a lot to the theory that there's susch a thing a music that is only for musicians.

Tis the truth! music should definately be put first,i had never seen the band but i had heard and liked their music.( heard lwtua when i was a snotty kid but didn't kno who they were!) They could all look like serial killers (like radiohead - utter wankers!!!!) for all i could care ,just as they keep knocking out those superb tunes is all that matters!!!! And lets be honest here they all look as a proper northern group should be ,well very rough round the edges!!!!

Incidently its nice to see some young ens appreciate "proper music" theres so much shite in the charts these days (coldplay) there isn't really much of a choice.

hmmm, not sure about this. when i was in high school lots of people were into the grateful dead and i can't say they were big on looking well-groomed and fashionable. nor were they particularly young. same goes for the stones, traffic, the who, etc. who all were big at my school. we also had a large clash following, if i recall.

as a high school teacher i can say this: i have a number of students who are into blues, funk, jazz, and bands like fugazi and the pixies. sure, fashion is important to most of the kids, but i think there are a lot of kids who listen to music for the sake of the music--not for the image.

When teenagers like the bands of their fathers... that's when a band is truly great. Usually, and rightly so, children don't like the music of their parents, music should evolve (though it hasn't much lately) and young people just follow the stream and pick their favourites on the current scene... they also might investigate music of the past, but they don't usually let their dad tell them what was better when he was young... And yet, there are some bands which are so great that you recognize a great album even if you find it in your mommy's record box. For me it was The Beatles. Revolver and Sgt. Pepper were probably the first records I've ever heard since I've been like 2 years old and I've always loved them, even more when I really got into music and the more I discovered bands the more I realised how The Beatles towered above the very most of them. Always hated Joan Baez though. This means The Beatles stand the test of time while Joan Baez is just a really boring old hippie. An Italian New Order fan, Marco, has a 13 years old son who just really got into New Order too. When WFTSC was released, he bought two copies, one for himself and one for his son, who adores the album. He'll come with him to Turin to see the concert. Who's so lucky here to have a teenager child really into New Order... I mean, not just "OK dad, they're alright" so you shut up, but "Wow dad, they're fookin cool! I love them!" and then they actually listen to the albums on their own when you're not around and wanna see the gigs... is there anyone so lucky? I wish my children, if I ever have any, grow up this way!

Hang on, as I remember the early 80s NO were the coolest band on the planet! Because:

they were 3/4 Joy Division (often described, so aptly as "painfully cool..."). That would have been enough, but there was also:

they made fantastic records; they were on the coolest record label ever; they worked with the coolest producer; their artwork was created by the coolest graphic designer; they shunned publicity/the music media and on the rare occasion they gave interviews they didn't say much at all; their music demanded that we took them seriously (and some of us took them far more seriously than they wanted); Barney wrote some great lyrics (OK and some really naff ones too); when they played live they just PLAYED; no chit chat or bullshit, sometimes 45 mins tops and often no encore - REALLY cool!

Oh and forgot to mention, they LOOKED fantastic too...

But take most of that image stuff away and what do we have left? A truly great band - still.

At nineteen, Joy Division has endured as one of my favorite bands for nearly five years. New Order I now listen to more often than Joy Division, and no band I've heard name check them in the last couple of years has written a song that tops their best.

This is a crap thread. How do you quantify if us oldies or you youngans are the better fans.

Ok just for arguments sakes, well I as many of "older" fans here spent many hundereds on $$ on them over almost 20 years, and thus helped to keep them going as a band for all those years. This probably makes the older fans the better fans.

Personnaly anyone who says they are a fan is ok by me.

Amen to that! It doesn't matter who you are, where you're from or how old you might be: as long as you're genuinely into the music, then that's fine by me. I also agree with Nuts's opinion that the music should come first. As far as I'm concerned, appearances count for nowt if the music's shite or the band are just a bunch of fakers who only care about the money *cough*The Strokes*cough*.

I get Tarbox's point tho', music has always been promoted on image by the record companies. Even NO were seen as a 'cool indie' band - dance music that was still cool & I'm sure many of us bought in to the image at first. BUT, no one stays for the image. Those of us here for decades are here for the music and those of you new to NO are here for the music, because the image no longer exists.

If i was a late-teen now, i'm not sure I would be deliberately going to gigs to see NO, the image of the Killers (or someone else) might draw me instead, But I'd buy the NO albums & i'd like to think i'd still be listening in 20 years.

The image can get you interested but the music is the only thing that can keep you coming back!

Being a newbie around the time of Get Ready, I was pretty confused by the Crystal Video "my, they look well for a band in their 40s" I thought . I still associate the vocal with that younger band in the video - even to this day.

I always knew the band in the Crystal video wasn't New Order, but a friend of mine who saw the video on mtv thought that was the band, although she said they look really young after beong around for 20 years. I explained to her that New Order didn't appear in their video and that actors were in place instead.
