Those human beings that form New Order

This could have been a simple reply to a Liv Post but, as this theme is spread over a few topics, I thought it might deserve its own...

So, a few times, Liv has mentioned the human aspect of New Order, the way she was moved by some things like Barney's dancing, hooky's clothing and other things.

And, apart from Liv, I think we don't talk enough about this. One of the reasons I love NO so much is because of these human aspects. If it was only and purely about the music, they'd probably be one of my favorite bands, even my favorite, but I wouldn't spend so much time on this site for instance.

Then again, it's absurd to separate the music from the people making it. It's because of them that their music is so moving and thus, the one I most want to listen to.

And I think the 4 of them, in their own ways, are beautiful human beings, people you care for and, as for a good fiction, you want to know what happens to them next.

Knowing that "Get Ready" is a very good album, I'm not only happy for me as a fan, I'm happy for them.

More simply : New Order produce the most human music on earth and, as music is such an important part of our lives, it has to be crucial, don't you think ?

Valid points - I'd have to agree with you on all accounts, dropping notes and singing badly is an integral part of NO. I was recording some music a while ago and I put a NO song on in the studio, the engineer couldn't believe that Low-Life i.e. a 'proper' recording had Barney singing Sub-Culture like he was sat on the bog.

Conversely, I suggested that Yngwie Mamstein was a tad boring hitting all the right notes on his comedy guitar.

In terms of the emotional content of the music, the fact that the songs on Get Ready reflect the life experience of people who are no longer in their very first youth (as Henry James would say) is a large part of the appeal for me (Close Range, Run Wild, Turn My Way) but may be an obstacle to attracting a new younger audience.

I have to agree on all accounts. I like New Order for the music AND for their image. I love it how they don't wan't to be as known as other big bands today. I do like Depeche Mode for instance but when I went to their Exciter concert I have to say I was a bit unimpressed. All they did was hype it up.

I have heard many people who have met the band (New Order that is, not DM) say that they are really nice people. Who knows maybe I will be able to meet them someday...

You have to admit that mystery is intriguing....

For me the image and people who form New order have always been as big a part of it for me as the music.

If these songs had been written and performed by some fucking no-mark boy band, I can almost certainly guarantee half of us here wouldnt have noticed the music in the first place.

The image and personas that make up New Order are part of the appeal. The mystery and the idea that we as fans are part of some kind of secret or conspiricy is always going to be what draws me.

The music is everything. I have spent years listening to the same tracks, without ever geting fed up. But, i still read every interview possible, and books and magazine articles about the band, because no matter what the human aspect appeals...

I remember watching NewOrderStory and I was intriuged, and if anything it made my interest in the band even greater, because i could see the band members as people, that they laughed and joked etc... It added the human aspect which I personally wanted to see.

I had many visits to the Hacienda when I was younger, I watched Mrs Mertons show and I shall be at the first showing of "24 hour Party People" because I want to see more, and I want to know more about the band I love.

Whether its Barney getting pissed with Shaun Ryder and giving hilarious interviews dressed as wise men or Hooky fighting with his ex wifes new boyfriends, or Gillian and Steve and their domestic bliss, it doesnt matter...that alongside the music all goes to make up New Order and is an intregal part of the experience for me...

The bit on NewOrderStory that always creases me up, is when the band are drinking and talking about the Hacienda. Stephen says that even though they payed for the bloody place he still had to pay to get in and never got any free drinks!!Yet Gillian's younger sister always got in for free and had free drinks,as the staff thought she was Gillian. Believe me,you've got to see this on the video.You'll piss yourself.:)

I recall in NO: Story, where they are talking about Peter Saville's work - that there was an idea that if you were a NO fan, you could walk into any record store anywhere in the world, and know a NO disc just by looking at the artwork.

There is a lot of mystery and intrigue about NO, which are certainly caused by the human condition.

I like a lot of techno/dance/whatever you want to call it music, but even I admit that much of it is lifeless - except New Order.

To me one of the big differences between NO and anyone else is that I listen to most music with my head: with NO it's my heart. I know that sounds pretty dorky, but it's the truth.

I think, too, NO is like a great movie. A young promising band, struck down by tragedy, aries like a Phoneix, goes on to make some of the best and most influential muic ever, breaks up, returns in glory.

There is something in NO that touches us differently than any other band. I guess that's what makes NO like no other band.

I have actually been on the voddie, but will normally drink owt.... wine, beer, spirits, methylated spirits, drain cleaner......

I do recall that part of the conversation where Stephen couldn't get in because they didn't believe he was in the band and he did say that he is not bitter though :P I have one question... (I didn't really want to bring this up) who are those wo(men) around Hooky??? I have always wondered that!

NewOrderStory is fecking wicked..... the bit where Barney tells the story about Ian Curtis having a fit and Steve being more concerned about getting some ciggies! lol And the discussion about the Hacienda, when Barney says about putting £10,000 a week into the Hac and Hooky corrects him... "Oh it was 10,000 a month well thats alright then!!!" I also love the bit when Barney says to Anthony Wilson, "You Cunt, you ruined my career!" LOLOL

Well April, Those nice young ladies hanging around Hooky were supposed to convey an image of him being a bit of a ..er.. how do I put this....monster shag god!!?? I haven't watched NewOrderStory for ages.I must dig it out again.Keith Allen is fucking mad on it. Funny thing is I recall getting in from seeing N.O at Reading '93,the first and only time I've seen 'em live.I spent most of their set down the front under a pile of bodies!!! Put the tv on to find N.O on.Surreal.
