Cocker!!!! Pulp is one of my favourite bands in the world.
Sheffield is a very nice city too. I'm not from Sheffield but I've been living there for most of 2004. You can't actually see that much of the musical heritage there, there are a few good clubs like the Leadmill and the Corporation where you can hear quite good indie music on certain nights...
However there are no good new bands coming from Sheffield as far as I know, and I personally think that there are more influential bands from Manchester (NO/JD, The Smiths, Stone Roses, Doves, Elbow, Oasis although they are 
) and Glasgow (Orange Juice, Josef K, Belle & Sebastian, Franz Ferdinand) than from Sheffield.

Yes, Duran Duran is probably the most famous Birmingham band. In fact they're probably more famous than the city itself, even though Birmingham has the second largest population in Brtiain.

For cool, "with it" music it has got to be the Manchester area considering it gave us Joy Division, New Order, The Stone Roses, The Happy Mondays, Black Grape. I suppose it also gave us Coronation Street but thats another story.

Well, the Cure when they were a proper band (as opposed to Robert Smith and his fleeting friends) came from Crawley - which suits the Cure's image perfectly...
Depeche Mode on the other hand are ultra proud of being from Basildon of all places (just outside London, I think). They are affectionally referred to as the Basildon boys - how gay does that sound?

as for most important musical city in the world (m.i.m.c.i.w.), it wouldn't be a city, but a region. the american southeast. from new orleans to memphis to the appalachians, where various folk musics of the world were synthesized first into jazz and the blues and country and then into rock. it is the birthplace of all things good in the 20th century.

But if we're talking about the most important I think it's obvious it's London. Almost everything happens in London. Many of the most important bands and artists in music history are not from London, from The Beatles to Bob Dylan, from Joy Division to Nirvana, but when they get huge in London (and usually when the NME starts to build the hype), that's when things really begin to work for that band...

Think ive joined this one a bit late, but referring to the Sheffield bashing, f**king hell, its not that bad. Dont get me wrong, ive only lived there for 12 months so im not getting all offended and defensive, just curious as to why this opinion exists. Maybe ive been lucky but it seems fine to me. Ok so parts of it aint that pretty but which big cities are? Much worse places in the country! Now Doncaster, on the other hand....If it got hit by a nuke it would probably do £10 worth of damage.

i have a low opinion of all of south yorkshire i'm afraid, been from west Yorkshire its been drilled into me by my parents since i was a lad that only west yorkshire counts in the whole of yorkshire,but i will say South yorkshire/sheffield/doncaster are nothing compared to the hell hole that is HULL and east Yorkshire/Humberside.
i think i'm gonna go wash my mouth out with soap for saying that dirty word that is Hull!
