I thought it was goofball thing to do but not a horrible mis-step. It was fun to see WIM performed, was the crowd into it? sounded like it on the webcast ~eng-gah-LEND

Bono, surely? Look at the way he ponces around the stage with an oversized flag. No one would do that unless they were taking the piss out of themselves. Would they? Erm... would they?

I think the Allen + horse moment was dead funny and I guess Coldplay haven't topped that. It'll be the moment of this Glasto people will remember, and New Order did it! :thumb:

To put it politely, I was fucking disgusted at the time! Bad enough playing that song, but along with a Pantomime horse ridden by Keef Allen in a Matador costume.

I agree with Tim. Crap but Funny.

Joe Mott in the Star who has been praising The Order and the album, wasnae impressed and buggered off to watch Kasabian, the Hyde Park gig also got slated by Carl Stroud in the same paper, new order were woeful and he said the amount of fans that turned up was pitiful, or words to that effect, I was down the front getting murdered at the time so I didnae see how many people were there, but according to my missus who stayed at the back, she said there were fookin loads of people, cos the big screen kept panning the crowd.

I for one am still glad I went Hyde Park and not Glasnost:nod:

Edit:

The Sun's wee report for Glasnost was better :

Fans forgot all about the miserable weather when this legendary band hit the stage. For the first time in years they sang their brilliant 1990 Number 1 World In Motion, bringing out the Glastonbury spirit in the crowd. 8/10

I thought it was typical of the crazy stuff they do and everyone dislikes at the time and then we all look back fondly on it in a few years as inspired. Good fun.

Loved Bernard chuckling into the mic when it came on, it was worth it just for that.

I guess we can now forever regard Keith Allen as the unflushable turd (greet title fer a U2 album that, like!) that always pops up whenever New Order are in the area! :nonono:

I believe Keef is the only man in Britain who can make Barney and Hooky look 'tall'.

God, what a shambolic set... I think they may have played about 4 minutes decently out of the entire hour....

It was embarrassing. I told everyone I know here in the US to watch it cause it was free online....

What a joke. Anyone with any objectivity will admit it was a horrible performance. I know the insane fans who cannot admit new order EVER play poorly, and folks who were at the show investing in hours of mud, will not be able to admit it, but get serious. This was a sad day for new order.

I suppose after this, will be all the posts about how endearing and better new order are when they suck, and why this makes new order the best rock band ever, because they are so unpredictable. Like Joy Division, they have angelic highs but hellish lows.

Well, just as we love them for their high moments, we can only be fair and despise them for their lows.

I think Hook, who I love, missed more notes than hit em on the first three songs. Every time I thought maybe they were getting a footing, they would blow it somehow.

Which was really sad, because I was psyched they had Dawn Z there... she was the only one onstage with any talent that night. Surely not Ana... how did she get a singing gig???

This shambolic gig, and the downward trend lately, is just a sign to move along, seek spectacle from other sources for the immediate future. Aj Wells was right on so many levels. And wrong too. BOTTOM LINE: What really is there to chat about new order in the next few months? They are tired and are about to take time off themselves and prep the next lp, maybe. They made their money for 2005 and will not be making much news until 2006....

Anyway, this is my last post for awhile. Off to summer things and life and other bands. I am sure you are all crying the predicted tears of deepest pain at this news!

Cheers fellas! See ya when the next lp comes out....

lol another drama queen. anyways on to the matter at hand,if i had a penny for everytime new order made a twat of themselves id be quids in. this is just another example of their (ahem)bizzre humor, anyone remember the tbthog video?,& wim video???,and was they THAT BAD at hyde or glasto? i thought they was quite good tbh and barney didnt seem to be looking sideways constantly for the autocue which im sure is another wind up as well.

How did the general reaction seem to those who were at Glatonbury? BBC'c patchy coverage more or less ruined any semblance of a balanced view of things. Saw Transmission 3 times WIM twice and still haven't seen Regret BLT or WFTSC. Transmission seemed to go well. TF sucked as per usual. Crystal and Krafty came over quite well. Jetsream and Run Wild why?

On a seperate note I was mightily impressed by Primal Scream. Started off only half watching and was drawn in by Gillespie's antics. By the time they got around to Swastika Eyes, I was loving it.

So sorry you are leaving us Senor Tarbox, I almost agreed with you on one thread a couple of months ago. Anyway, Glasto was one of the better ones in terms of performance - maybe the standards by which we gauge them have slipped like waistlines and hairlines, I know I was horrified when I ended my 12 year exodus to experience such crap shows after several years of.....crap shows with different setlists and smaller venues, but Glasto wasn't that bad at all. Far better performance than Hyde Park, that's for sure!

Great to see Dawn Zee there in person -- great voice, great look! I like her! The only problem is that she's a REAL singer and often burries Barney's voice. Sometimes Bernard will force his voice to make it louder in order to keep up with Dawn, and that makes him sing completely off-key every time.

One question: anyone know why the band cut the electro bassline on Krafty ???? It was replaced with Hooky playing his bass over all the tune, as if the song came from Brotherhood. Not bad, but I prefer with the sequenced line on...

Interestingly enough, I seem to remember Tarby really loved the New York gig. Which I'd probably have down as my worst gig of those I've attended this year. I mean Coachella was bad, but that wasn't New Order's audience, New York supposedly was yet got a similar reaction from the majority of the crowd. Like everyone just wanted to be elsewhere, or were perhaps waiting for another band?

Different horses, different courses.

Dawn must have the patience of a saint to perform with New Order. She would be perfectly entitled to give a few evil stares and scournful comments inbetween songs, to Barney, Hooky and Phil.

Glastonbury is the first time Ive seen Hooky have a shocker. His bass was all over the place, both with bum notes and tuned up incorrectly.

You weren't at Finsbury then three years ago? Don't rely on the DVD for memories - it's been post-produced to clean up the sound. 60 miles an hour was atrocious at Finsbury!

I have never seen or heard a gig where there hasn't been at least one bum note from Hooky. Not even in the early 80s. Whole songs in the wrong key, songs changing key part way through, a particularly weird Ceremony at Paradiso in 84 where he changes key just after Barney has changed his key to suit the one Hooky is playing.....the man's a legend. Forget Lovejoy, Hooky is the real legend!

So good you posted it twice?! I'm wondering just how good the memory is of a lot of whingers here?! Is there some vicious rumour going around that New Order were once pitch perfect, and we just missed those gigs?! They've always played a little off-key, Barney's always made up the lyrics (in the days before autocue), etc, etc.

On the Bass God theme, Hooky has actually completely butchered WFTSC approximately, um, 10 times out of 10 when they've played it live this year. Absolute ripped it to shreds the second he comes in. Not sure it's entirely his fault though. I think, like the rest of us, he's probably worried Barney can't carry that initial beautiful vocal so creates his own little diversion to deflect the attention away from Mr Sumner!!

At least Barney is singing the second line of the chorus now, he's managed to shorten his breather from the original four lines (as per the French TV debacle) to just the first line now.

Sorry, but I have to defend Barney in this case. Anyone heard the Glasto webcast of WFTSC? In this case it's good that the bass is a bit louder in the mix, so you can actually hear, note by note, what Hooky is playing. And that has absolutely nothing to do with music, let alone a bass line in the conventional sense. NOBODY can sing to that even in roughly a correct tune.

can somebody please fill me in on this pantomine horse thing because I havent a clue. I dont really have time searching through the site. Im having a really hetic week with a wedding to attend, and a death in the family(my 92 yr old uncle). Both are quite a bit of distance to travel too.

Dawn is a great backing singer and carries Barnie through a lot. I Like her intro to crystal, its a great opener and she sets the mood. She looked a bit miffed when Hooky kinda doubled up on her mic and "sang" like a drunken navvy. Was Hookys bass on a transmitter? If so, thats some range. His walk to the front of the crowd was a superb gesture. On the Panto Horse note, I reckon the band must regret it a bit. A good measure of its popularity is that it was never mentioned as a "highlight" by the media. If WIM had been dropped from the set and theyd finished with Blue Monday as planned, those BBC3 chaps wouldve been fawning all over them. Apart from WIM it was a good gig

Hello!

I thought Hooky was appalling! Was he unable to tune his bass before Love will tear us apart? Were they really going to refuse to play it or was that a wierd joke?

I couldn't work out what was going on, they looked like they'd had a massive argument or something.

I was a bit worse for wear, but I'm convinced the crowd booed as they left the stage - can anyone confirm this?

Gutted, we were really looking forwards to seeing them. It was my first time and my girlfriend was so excited about them. At least they played BLT, although not the version she wanted apparantly.

Barney introduced Keith Allen on stage (dressed in a Matador costume) riding on top of a pantomime horse :nonono:

Pantomime Horse : Picture yersel dogging a bird except it's yer head up the arse of the person in front and both of you are wearing a daft looking costume which is supposed to look like a horse.

Watched the live stream at about 6am here in Oz. Good connection, no cut-outs at all. I was amazed at the breakdown of camera shots (Barney 85%, Hooky 10%, Steve 3%, Dawn 1.5%, Phil .5%).

I thought it was an embarrassment, not as much as the fluffed lines at Hyde Park, but have our expectations become so low that we applaud a performance like that? The new songs sound rotten live I think.

As for the Panto horse, her vocals in Jetstream were just awful.

Which side were you on?! I was on the right hand side (dur) and no one boo'ed there. Why the fcuk would anyone boo, especially at the end?! If you don't like someone, you boo continuously surely?! I fcuking would.

Interesting first post though. Coming on to a New Order messageboard asking if anyone can confirm whether they were boo'ed at Glastonbury?! Are you an infiltrator from alt.music.new-order?!

For the record, they were boo'ed when they first played Glastonbury, cos it was a hippy/rock festival in them days and Led Zep or someone were headlining. Christ, why didn't they just give up then, eh, and get proper jobs??

You're gonna have to point me in the direction of what-you-consider-to-be a 'good' New Order performance then?! Just so that we can compare notes. 511 or 316, perhaps? I think you'll find they'll have been overdubbed and edited to the band's tastes.

New Order have always been rather ramshackle live, when are people gonna realise that?!

If people expect NO to be so fooking note-perfect they(disappointed fans) should, to partly quote NO from Perfect Kiss "just stay at home playing with their pleasure zones" with the greatest hits on as further orgasm inducement in the background. After all, the bum notes and dodgy vocals prove that not EVERY part of their gigs comes out/off of a HDD/tape/sequencer/whatever. They are human, not mythical Olympian beings. They eat, drink, piss & fart as much as any of us do(maybe more so at times, depending on what's been on the menu in the past 24 hours!). End of rant.

It's a fact... on 511, check it out, on Regret Hooky is changing his bass and you can actually hear the bass while he's doing it.

The DVD has been overdubbed to sound "perfect"... if that is possible.

It's a fact... on 511, check it out, on Regret Hooky is changing his bass and you can actually hear the bass while he's doing it.

The DVD has been overdubbed to sound "perfect"... if that is possible.

Wow, that's crap beyond belief.

Apparently it is business as usual in the music industry...

We had a huge debate when somebody claimed New Order were miming when he saw Hooky taking off his bass and the bass still played... ;)

But bootlegs shows something else....

You're gonna have to point me in the direction of what-you-consider-to-be a 'good' New Order performance then?! Just so that we can compare notes. 511 or 316, perhaps?

Reading 1993 - perfect

In what way? Loads of us from here were there and it was like a wake. I don't think any of the gigs were that good, per se, in 1993, and they did the exact same setlist from the US onwards. Reading 93 promised a lot, and failed to deliver. Went out with a fizzle instead of a bang. For a 'final' gig Reading 89 was infinitely better.

Just think musically it was much better than anything I've heard live

Oh right, gotcha. I don't think it was a good gig, per se, but I guess they'd perfected the setlist by then!

I can hear the guffaws already but I really rate Montreaux. You'll probably hate it for being sterile (granted the crowd is a dud) but it's a great performance musically and a great song selection. The fact that they are quite sedate is fine by me - I preferred their aloof, understated dignity on stage, when they hardly addressed the audience, as opposed to endless whoops, Carry-On humour and guys dressed in horse suits.

The beauty of New Order was that even though they could be cold, clinical and devastating onstage, fans were in on the joke - they were funny bastards off the stage. Now that they're funny bastards ALL the time, use autocues, backing singers, taped vocals and keyboards, crap dancing, dodgy duets...it's all got a bit silly.

I think they feed off their audience, like any performers. Montreaux looks a little sedate, cos the audience were the same. I saw them in Denmark the day before (or after?) and they were a different animal. Can still remember stage-lights switching to green and Temptation kicking in and the entire place just going OFF. You can see them dancing around like chumps when the audience are into it on this year's dates, but at somewhere like Coachella they just looked bored off their tits cos they were performing before NIN fans, all waiting for the 'main act'.

I believe you, with perhaps the exception of Steve who always seems to look bored out of his mind

I don't know, Al. I've heard only the bootleg, but Reading 1993 seems like a mixed event. On one hand you have a band in the worst mood possible, and overall a mediocre performance. BUT there are glorious moments like Fine Time and Perfect Kiss... my only regret of the times I've seen New Order is I never got those two essential songs. We've had others... there were no Isolation or Crystal at Reading 1993, so I don't complain. But I'd really love to get Perfect Kiss live at least once, though I know it's so unlikely and I'm so happy we got back EGG! :thumb: Anyway I agree the spirit and quality of that gig are nothing when compared to the triumphant comeback of 1988 or some great gigs like Paris 2002...
