A bit of an over-reaction, don't you think?

I think it's common knowledge around these parts that they are taking a break after the latest dates to finish off the follow-up to WFTSC, which is apparently nearly finished except for 2 songs.

I don't think the sky is falling just yet, but just enjoy it while you can. CTB

Good Zoinks! A marathon 3 hr. setlist would be needed, cuz they'll need to play the 2006 album tracks, plus the prerequisite Crystal/Regret/Atmosphere/Transmission suite, and we all know they'll take BLT/TF/Temptation/BM to their graves.

Barring fatalities I don't think we'll know. My guess is it'll just wind down there'll be a hiatus a la 93-98 without any formal announcements and without a regrouping.

It'll happen one day. Oh well, as long as the piss-ups continue. We need a venue, play a few DVD's (live of course), a tribute band or two, lots of beer, the odd duff footballer to show his face and plenty of people in attendance. That shouldn't be a problem.

Now, does anyone know a DJ who'd be into such a day-out?

Id guess 2007. They bring out the new album spring 2006 and do a big tour finishing in 2007. I think theyre be too old then to continue. But hey, what a bloody long and successful career they've all had.

I seriously cannot face the reality of no New Order.

I remember Hooky once saying that he could see himself still playing on, doing NO greatest Hits or whatever in pubs in years to come, or something to that effect. Can't quite see Barney being there though. Actually, I for one am looking forward to the proposed Freebase/bass stuff - as it at least sounds like it might be a bit 'different'; I've got reservations about N.Os present 'Rockist' leanings, and have severe doubts about the next album - like they're going to have kept all (any of) the best songs for that album? I don't think so. I think Barney might knock it on the head soon, he doesn't look happy on stage, and I think he's just trotting stuff out for the pension fund. But I can't see Hooky stopping till he drops, and as long as he plays on I'll listen; even if he's just in the local doing greatest hits to a drum machine!

YES! I have been thinking about that recently. I wonder which songs they will play from WFTSC! I am sure they'll at least keep the title track in the setlist since Barney loves it so much, but do you think they will be able to keep Jetstream and Krafty in the setlists? And maybe they will begin playing other tracks from the album like Turn and GIAUE. Regardless, the setlist will be getting mighty crowded with "must-plays," unfortunately leaving little room for old classics. But perhaps they will surprise us and play plenty of old goodies. I doubt it, though.

can't bear to think about it, especially having not seem them live yet. i wouldn't worry yet as nic's comments about 2006 are very promising and moreover - through it all, they get something out of it more then just the cash -you can see'm having a great time of it, at times.

I think that its unlikely that we will see an announcement of any final tour or a final album. More likely that they will just fade away at some point.

When they do stop producing new music I hope they never come out of retirement to do a greatest hits tour. If they need to line their pockets in their old age, I'd much rather see them release material from their creative peek: a truly comprehensive box set, re-leased albums with demos/mixes on a 2nd disc, video or audio of classic live performances, or even a tell-all autobiography (though their memories don't seem so good even now).

After the 2006 album, I suspect that's it. It's a very sad thought, but you never know, they could still surprise us say in 2008, but I seriously doubt it. Retirement time unfortunately.

I can not believe this talk of New Order coming to an end. Right now they are in the middle of one of their most productive period ever. Ok so they don't tour as much as they used to or as we would like them to, but that's their perogative.

I don't think New Order are coming to end anytime soon. they just got a new member, have album coming out next year, and are making some of the best music they've ever made. Why quit now? Look at the Rolling Stones, and the who, there still around. I think New order may pull something like that, but with the good music still coming out.

New order are just saying shit for attention. Barney said it twice, once in 87 when all went their way to do side projects and after Republic when they were out for 8 years, its all media hype bullshit, then theyll come back.

By the way, i vote option 4, because I dont know and I dont give a shit, when NO puts out an album, ill buy it, if they dont they dont, I am not saying I will miss them but I dont know. period.

They'll be playing till they die, literally- they'll finish their set and then they'll drop dead.

I'd happily be the DJ - even although i'm only in the Dave Doubledecks League...

I reckon they'll wrap in 2010; after one or two more albums... I hope they stay together long enough to win their outstanding achievement BRIT though...

Like many have said Barney looks a bit unhappy on stage... but then again he always has, he's just looking quite tired of it all as well... Stephen looks noticeably unhappy nowadays...

Hooky will go on and on until he falls off his perch; with or without NO!

The tours, sad to say, are going to get more thin on the ground due to Bernard and Steve's thoughts being elsewhere. I suspect they'll do more studio stuff both as NO and in co-operation with other people. They may even surprise us with some updated versions of old stuff on album reissues or perhaps as has been said earlier release more live audio/video from the vaults to go with the soon-to-come live DVD/videosingles reissue. :) :) :)

I'm with Ronald and Beach Boy on this one. I reckon the Order have a fair few years left in 'em yet. Actually, I can't believe people are talking like this when the new album's not long out and there's going to be a new one next year (assuming all goes according to plan). Honestly, it's as if some people want them to finish soon!

I say soon after the next album, a small tour, hopefuly finishing in Manchester, then barney will hang up his dancing shoes, steve will look after the kids and bang about his shed, phil will do sessions and hooky will play in salford british legion till he dies, although he aparently lives in alderly edge, cheshire (very posh).

I've been preparing myself for this, and although it would be sad I would prefer them to officialy retire rather than keep going and get dropped by the label or just fade out into obscurity.

They tend now to do what most bands do in that they have a basic core of classics like BM, BLT, True Faith, Temptation etc and then slot in the odd JD track and some songs from the current album.

If they kept to this, it would create room for about six classics, two JD songs and seven other songs, either from a current album or the last one in each case.

I think they might take stock a bit after the touring for the next album is complete (around this time next year), None of them are getting any younger and that's the reason why the side projects are no longer around; Barney said as much a while back.

I think they're good for a few more years but it's down to what they want really. By the time 2007 comes around, they'd have been playing together for thirty years! It could be that it's not the most important thing in their lives anymore; they've achieved what they set out to do and have had a huge impact on modern music. You can't ask for any more really.

Nah! i'm hoping theyll carry on. look at Kraftwerk, theyre still going and touring. Id be happy with four manequins at the front of stage. I hope they carry on making albums well into theyre sixties. Alice Cooper said the other day on Radio 2, that its hard to give up something thats in the blood.

A bit pissed tonight and watched the 5 11 DVD again for the first time in ages.They looked and sounded so much more enthusiastic at that gig* .So much more effort seemed to be put in than from what ive seen and heard in 2005.And theyve aged dramatically in just a few years.Even Phil looks more kanackered these days.

I hope that when this happens, and sadly I reckon it will, they need to make an official announcement rather than the mumblings they threatened us with in NewOrderStory. I was in agony until 2001 after that - I'd rather face up to the reality than pretend that it might not have happenned...

1. I think given the choice, Bernard would rather be making Electronic records, but for pure economics he was forced back into New Order.

2. Hook said Bernard got the band to finish all the songs - more than they needed. I think it is part of Sumner's grand plan to quickly bang two NO albums out to make some quick dosh, and then return to Electronic again, with the hope that this time the duo takes off commercially.

3. Bernard has already stated he has not finished with Electronic. Hooky, perhaps because of Electronic, is launching yet another band of his own...

As for live performances, I can actually see New Order stop recording albums together, and just reuniting for lucrative gigs.

Was at the NY show and they all looked happy to be performing. EVERYONE in the audience was dancing and having a great time. Thankfully, they will probably not be different than most boxers in this age in that they will constantly "come out of retirement". Difference is they will be successful. They still make great music!! Much depends on a new fan base. I, for one, have my 15 year old daughter into them. Screw the music today's youth are into, save for a few bands like The Killers.

I like the sound of this package, especially as I think theres a lot more unused mileage to be had out of Electronic and Hooky has learnt a lot from being out of (the 93-01 hiatus), then back in NO which will only enrich the idea of Freebass...

If Electronic couldn't take off commercially in their heyday, it ain't gonna happen to-day. Marr ain't selling records these days (Remember RECORDS ,thems the black plastic thingymijigs u throws at zombies. :D ), New Order's barely charting. The only way Marr is ever gonna sell records again is if he (1) buries the hatchet with Morrissey (WITH Morrissey, not IN Morrissey :D ), or (2) if he gets a gig in a record shop. The only way Sumner's ever gonna sell records is if he keeps recording, and more importantly, TOURING, with New Order.

I recall reading a recent interview in which Bernard said he hoped to be "doing this" (making music) for many more years to come.

That warmed my heart.

That would be a truly sad end to their career.

In a few years, they could end up being the Rolling Stones of the electronic world. But we'll have to see.

Well, XTC have been doing this for decades. But I also think they'll tour. This time it was festivals, next time it'll be venues... Apparently they were thinking about a venues tour already for this September, but then just thought at taking a break before the next album... it's probably the right choice, otherwise they could have really got sick of each other again. About Electronic, I've read Bernard says they won't reform, but you never know, Johnny isn't doing too well with the Healers... Electronic were a hit machine compared to them... About retiring before the decline, I disagree... I like seeing bands which once were in the mainstream carry on doing their thing in a smaller dimension with dignity... the perfect example is Marillion, though I don't like them I admire how they reacted to their decline. They were dropped from the label and just started releasing records on their own, building a strong web community which made a hardcore following. They now run a rather successful businness of their own (recording costs are paid by the fans pre-orders and they still have a rather large audience at gigs) and they've taught a lesson to every record company that if you really take care of things even the most unlikely of them can work.

i guess it is wait and see how much of a splash the next album will make... and sorry to be negative but it's hard to believe Still Waiting for the Bloody Siren's Call Part 2 (or whatever they call it) will generate as much interest as this years album... new New order albums have become commonplace, unless they somehow have a killer single hidden away.

a reduced interest in New order will mean the label and New order will have less interest in New order... and they are getting older obviously
