Phils Keyboards? Real? Fake?

I noticed in the pics from Glastonbury and Hyde Park that Phil now has more synths on stage than he did on the US tour.

I know the second synth is for Barney, but Phils rack now has to additional synths attatched to it.

Considering that Phil mimes his keyboard parts for WFTSC, Krafty, and Jetstream ( it really annoys me that he pretended to play the piano intro on the US tour and in all the European shows Ive seen he wanks on JET with guitar) why would he suddenly need more gear now?

Phil mimes his keyboards for the new songs, plays live on the old ones, but why does he suddenly need an extra rack.

I hate to say this, but I think those two extra synths on Phils rack are for show.

It really annoys me that he cant play the synth parts on JET or WFTSC or Krafty live, he just mimes them or ruins them with his atonal guitar gunk.

Electro is a big part of New Orders history, its a shame that they arent doing the synth live, especially as they used to criticise Depeche Mode for using a backing tape. Ive seen DM live, and the majority of thier synth parts are played, not programmed like New Orders.

A shame.

So whats Phils extra synths for? To make him look cooler?

At least they are not crap and gay like DM, if people do not like New Order then visit a DM or Fat Bob site instead.

New Order are the godfathers of innovative electro disco indie alter rock bla h ablaaa.....

Give them a break. What's the point of being an electronic band if you have to play live? :evil4:

Hah hah. Funny guys.

Seriously, though, of course New Order are awesome, but Phil miming synth parts live is a bit trashy for a class act like New Order, dont you think?

Anyways, I really do wanna know about Phils extra gear at Clastonbury and Hyde, any ideas?

Nice one:clap:

But there's 'live' keyboards and 'live' keyboards. Programmed sequenced tracks (ie the bass in BM, sequencers in temptation etc) and the manually played swathes of string etc in your silent face, Thieves etc. You can't play 'live' the former, but it would be a con if everything like the latter was on tape.

I think Phil could easily play the piano intro and synth parts on JET and he could easy do the same on WFTSC, I think itd make the live performances of those songs better. The synth strings at the end of WFTSC are lovely.

Also, he should actually play his parts on Krafty instead of miming, given that his guitar ads nothing to the song.

I think Regret would sound a lot better if he played synth on it like Gillian did instead of wanking on it with guitar.

Oh yeah, I love New Order too, so I hate to see them putting easily playable synth parts on a backing track so thier newest member can add useless guitar to the songs. We dont need more guitar.

Barney is a great guitarist, I love his playing.

The Mode ain't crap! They've been banging out fine songs for decades, including quite a few dark synthy numbers as well (see the comparison with No there)...

And so what if parts of Mode are gay??? I'd put money on at least one member of NO being bisexual...

Anyway>>> Phil is probably given programmes to avoid fucking up... At Hyde Park he played a bum note on Blue Monday (if memory serves) and Barney nearly cut him in two with the evilness of his look!

Craigy, they are not called Depish for nothing mate. Please remember this:nod:

As for "Does Phil play live"

10 out of 10 for observation Mr Starkey, it's something I'd never notice, Brian's right with the sequenced parts, obviously he's not playing them, they're pre-programmed, I cannae play keyboards, but having seen em play on Jools and Canal + amongst others, I thought he was playing live, espescially on Crystal.....but what do I know.

An extra rack? Classic.

Did you see Barney give Phil an evil look during a Blue Monday bum note - or am I imagining this...?

Looks like there is some commond ground covered in this thread and the one about the audio treat EGG.

So if I may quote myself, here is what I said on the other thread. You're sure Phil just mimes those keyboards parts by the way ?

Does everything has to be preprogrammed ? I mean, I would prefer Phil to drop some guitar parts and rather play some keyboard stuff. And by that, I mean stuff that are notes played, not just patterns and programming. I find it disturbing to watch a band that looks like just a rock band (2 guitars, bass, drums) and sounds like a more keyboard-based one, see what I mean ?

(But I know it was already the case with songs like Dream Attack live.)

I prefer when they have to push even juste on or two buttons, to give the impression that it's more open to variations

Of course, you can't do live everything that's on the record. But that's the point of live shows too: trying to find a way to do songs without the billion layers you can have on record, even if it means dropping some parts...

Sorry if the reading is sometimes a bit incoherent but it's an mix-up of a few posts of mine.

They've always used sequencers, often in a subtle way to underpin the track. Songs like Love Vigilantes and Age of Consent both have a bass sequencer part that you can hardly hear, I think they use them in a click track way for the live synths. Most of the time when Gillian was with the band, her playing would consist of triggering a pre-recorded part (that they had recorded, a particular phrase or voice that would be configured so that when she pressed a certain key, the sound would change and play a pattern of music), obviously there were always some live keyboards as well, and there is no doubt to me that there still are some live keyboard parts. They've been using certain pre-recorded parts for years though - the intros to Regret and 60mph, and latterly the first chorus vocal lines of WFTSC are all pre-recorded. Bass is live though, as is the guitar and most of the vocal input!

Yeah...

I mean, I know Phil actually plays keys on TF, BM, Crystal, TBTHOG, Tempation, BM, BLT, SLC, YSF..

But I really dislike the fact that he mimes of all of the keys for the WFTSC album..

As for the Canal Plus show...

Phil mined his keys on that show. He played on Crystal and LWTUA, but he mimned his synth parts for JET, WFTSC, and Krafty. He pretended to play them.

He did the same at the Chicago show..

But watch the Southside video...suddenly the piano intro for JET and all the other synth parts for the songs from WFTSC are playing themselves..

It just annoys me. I really do think his extra synths at Hyde park and Glasto were just ther for sure, since he didnt appear to touch them and didnt need them for the earlier shows....

the machines were certainly cabled up so they were under secuencer control. there's a big silvery analogue-y lookin fooker on top of the stand......could be for YSF ( I say that because it sounds "live-er" than things like BM).

It's funny I have a hatred for tape, and I learned most of it from New Order, so I do feel a little personally let down by the use of the HD.

However, seeing more beasties is good, you only mock that crap up for TotP, and then it's Auntie's stunt $MACHINE_IN_VOGUE (dx7-d50-m1-trinity-i stopped watching).

When it comes to music, you can call me screaming mental, but I am in total agreement with Dr Shivasubrahmanian chandrasegrampeli : "Whether we are based on Carbon or Silcon makes no fundamental difference, we should each be treated with the same respect". On stage, a drum machine on tape annoys me as much as would a drummer on tape.

What eats at me most ( and will appear in "that" post I'm collecting my wits for) is that "back in the day" they went 100% live with equipment that was moody, stroppy, unstable, insane and often downright broken. Now I thought technology had progressed....most of my shit can stay in tune when the lights come on at any rate....so why is it HARDER now? (I heard someone say that the new FX technology was the reason there were only 13 episodes in the New Dr Who.....LOL).

But at what point would those who don't care start to care? They replace Steve with a tape? Hooky? Barney? In fact as I asid elsewhere, if reliability and honesty towards the studio version are the cited reasons for the deployment of tapes......I can think of something (ahem, someone!) FAR more in need of being a play-in than the machines

There's something pretty hilarious in the current ongoing threads, if you think of it. There's debate about which songs are overrated and so many things. As it has been said, the New Order fan is a pretty difficult one.

But in the same time, lots of these people who demand so much of their favorites bands can't be arsed about if they play live or if it's just monkeys starting tapes.

It's a bit : don't mind if they mime all thay songs from star to end, as long as they change the setlist...

Only at NeworderOnline's ...

PS : sorry for the double posting - but two threads, as I already said, cover approximately the same grounds.

For my part I only rage against such things BECAUSE I LOVE THEM.

They've always been about more than music, and I suspect I(we) care rather rather more than they do these days.

What can I say, I like the noise of live keyboards. Only tape you'll ever find on a slightlynarrow stage will have random bits of tv shows and movies on it.

Don't EVER mistake my anti-tape or Barney's a twat(been a very good boy lately apart from his guitar tantrum at glasto when Hookie was among the masses) rants for any kind of dislike or lack of love of the worlds greatest band.

Maybe I just got programmed back in the factory days?

Phil is really hired help for the band. Even if New Order say he is part of the band, we all know he had nothing at all to do with what makes New Order great.

To make things worse, Phil informs us all that he has now been in the band longer than Ian Curtis. But Curtis was never worshipped for his longevity, but for is quality of his work. I hope Phil pisses off soon...

I stated this before, nothing against Phil, but i think it was a mistake hiring him. He really adds nothing. I think they should of just hired an electronic genius such as a Auetche to accompany them on tour. I dont understand with all the remixes of NO why they decide to add another guitarist.

If Phil said that being part of the NO/JD fan longer then Ian curtiss that is utter bullshit, and then i have something against him. Granted that is probably true, but curtis had more talent in his left pinky then phil-in.

Hum, you know, what makes New Order great is the mix of gee-tars and keyboards...

When they only do one of them, it gives pretty average results... (ie Rock The Shack, Working Overtime, and well, others)...

But when you mix them, you get Vanishing Point and Dream Attack!

I think everyone should agree that we accept New Order using programmed/sequenced instrumentation at their gigs. The complaint I agree with is that they shouldn't be pretending to play those parts.

It's okay, just don't give me that electro shit, not really kind of a thing I'd want NO to do. It's okay for Depeche, PSB, Erasure etc to use the keyboards so much (and I do like all of these bands, well not Erasure though, they make me vomit), that's why I said that what I said. Take Guilt for example, still sounds like some lame song from "Very" (PSB album). Even the whole of Republic sounds much better!!! And you know I didn't mean they should completely fuck the keyboards. The beauty of the band is that they actually mix those instruments in the most wonderful way my ears have ever heard. My personal taste after all, I guess. And as for the keyboard songs off Get Ready (Someone like you occures to mind), yeah I usually skip them. See, there's no point in arguing about it. We all like the band for our very own reasons.

i dont think its arguing, its more of a discussion. I respect you tastes dearly, maya. Are you the one that says that republic sounds PSB? I really agree. You described it perfectly.

Yeah, it's like listening to a bloody PSB album, only with Barney on vocals. Can't remember last time I played it, to be quite honest with you. I mean, I really like PSB sound (well, pre - Very period, to be precise), it's just I don't like NO sounding like PSB or any other band. It's the perfect mix of all those instruments that makes them unique, right? And as for Phill's keyboard playing, I couldn't care less whether it was real or fake. People are just paying too much attention, that's all. What the hell did they expect? The real Kylie to appear and sing "set me free" instead of that sample for BM!?!?! I say leave the band alone, they still fucking rock and after all these years still sounding much much better than some of these new copycats.

When you say BLT, do you actually mean Bizarre Love Triangle or Biznotic Love Trapezoid? Okay, joke aside, my favourite Electronic album is Twisted Tenderness but something tells me you've already expected an answer like that. :D It's not that I don't really like the Electronic's first album. Get the message is one of the best songs they've ever done. Let's just put it this way: I more or less like everything except that I tend to skip some songs more often than the others. ;) And believe it or not, BLT has always been in my Top 10! :thumb:

Probably not the remix though... :D

I expected you to say Twisted Tenderness of course, it's the footprint of Get Ready.

Oh well, this prooves New Order can attrack many type of fans...!

its weird, i think the first electronic sounds really outdated. With the exception of get the message, which i think is such a timeless song. Marr sounds fantastic and he makes it sound so simple. Does that make sense? Also Barney's lyrics are so cleaver, witty, and perfect pop song all at the same time.

Ok, my 4 comments:

  1. Phil's just a puppet, has of course nothing to do with synths at any level in any situation in the studio. So, expecting him to "play" parts that Barney and the producer at hand come up with is not very likely to ever happen effortless. There's always gonna be struggle (I mean, most of the parts are probably nor even played trough more than a couple of times before they get recorded in the sequencers...that's how it's done these days).

  2. Miming parts is not very attractive, but is looking at Phil at all any fun? As I said, I expect most parts to be sequenced from the beginning and probably rendered into pure audio on their backing Akai DR16s hd-recorders for regular linear playback along with some sync. So, not playing parts is ok for me, miming is accepted as I couldn't care less about Phil in particular and setting up a rack with synths/effects is just pleasant for us tech-heads 'cos we somehow talk us into believing they actually use that equipment in the studio (not true of course).

  3. Depeche Mode has touched at least as many people as NO. I love both bands and consider Martin Gore and Bernard Sumner to be the absolute elite of electronic pop songwriters. They are both very unique and use extremely unusual harmonies. A gift to us all, really.

  4. Electronic's first album is in my eyes on of the 3 best albums made in modern pop history. It just breathes new optimism and echoes the feelings of being creative geniuses in a fucked up industrial city where you either play football, mug people or create music. It is a blend of very creative people at their peaks in their careers that simply gets to me everytime I listen to it. Incredible.

But she is right about Marr being a genius, at least with guitars. I wish we could have had Marr in New Order, instead of Phil, in some capacity. Most New Order fans would respect Marr because of his musical history and awesome guitar playing...

Why the HELL would Phil even think of faking keyboard parts???

I had suspected he mimed some keyboards based on video footage I'd seen recently, but had convinced myself I was just paranoid. My worst fears are now confirmed.

This couldn't be Bernard's idea, could it? If not, then someone needs to get Phil in check. He's clearly an above average guitarist, but - I'm sorry to say - this revelation ruins him in my eyes. :nono:

Also, I wish Phil would play those keyboard parts he's miming! Just imagine the reaction - 15 years ago- if told New Order would be miming keyboard parts in 2005! They would probably have :banghead: .

What's changed?

Don't get me wrong, New Order's the best there is, and probably the best there ever will be. Didn't New Order's Touched by the Hand of God poke fun at groups who pretended to play instruments?

Well I saw footage of some of those Republic songs, where the some of the songs play themselves, and Gillian Barney & Hookey just add barely audiable guitars.

Or the question of does Steve play drums or synth on BLT, as he did on the earlier versions.

Things change instrumentation changes from manual to automated. But still I prefer them to be doing something on-stage rather than just standing around

NOrder fans fall into three camps;

  2. Those who like the synth / dance tracks, dance like Barney and are probably scifi fans. Politics; left of centre.

  3. People like me who like to Rock the Shack, occassionally do a spot of moshing, but mainly dance like Barney to synthy stuff. Politics; moderate.

1 and 2 will always be at each other's throats...

I don't think Phil is miming and, if he is, he's not doing it on all the synth parts he's obliged to play (or look like he's playing).

There's a fair bit of kit still on-stage with them at the moment. They used to cart around several synths, a rack of effects, samplers, at least one drum machine, a keys mixer and a sequencer. That's been slimmed down since the Get Ready gigs to Phil's Roland XP-80, an all-singing, all-dancing 'workstation' synth. Steve uses a Kurzweil synth for his parts, although I think he's switching programmed drum patterns and maybe triggering samples too.

Barney uses another synth on Blue Monday only really but I've seen him share one with Gillian in the past! The other 'new' synths on Phil's rack - one's a MonoMachine which is a new one on me and I'm a synth nutter! - which was MIDId up so I take it it was contributing layers here and there. A good deal of the synth parts are sequenced or maybe recorded on their hard drive recorder (which sits to the left of Steve's drum kit; you can see it on their various TV performances).

Phil breaks off from playing guitar on Krafty to play the bells bit so one would think he was actually playing it rather than miming. Barney must've improved as a musician overall because he can now sing and play at the same time, the majority of the Order's past material being typified by him singing inbetween playing!

Using any kind of recorded media or live sequencing poses a question over what you play live over it and what would either sound better sequenced/recorded or played live. When I gigged with a similar setup, I preferred to alternate so I was playing a bassline on one song, chords on another and a lead part on another. It's up to them really.

putting aside the use of tape on stage....

the fact that this guy is allowed to MIME something is very dissappointing...why try to fake the crowd? Its the hand-job version of lipsynching, and it shouldnt be allowed...very very lame.

if you listen to the latest mp3s of "Blue Monday" from the Belgium show, you'll notice there's a lot of neat synth parts going on. I'm pretty sure that's courtesty of both Phil and Barney playing their XP-80s and the additional Korg microKorgs as well (see the recent pictures and you'll notice there are microKorgs duct-taped onto the XP-80s!).

Phil mimes the bell solo on Krafty, ever noitce how it keeps on goign for two notes after he goes back to his guitar.

The fact that he pretended to play the very simple synth parts on JET at the US shows and now doesnt even bother really annoys me.

Back in the 80s, Barney never would have let Gillian mime her hand played parts.

Perhaps the extra synts are for the new BM samples, but when they played those samples at the Southside fest, they still only had thier XP 80s.

I dont think Phil adss to NO at all. NO already has a great guitarist in Bernard Sumner...

Synths and electronics area big part of New Orders sound and all the non sequenced parts should be played live, not put on a backing track so Phil can add useless guitar parts more suited for Oasis than New Order..

Craigy, put me down as sort of 2.5. Somewhere in the middle( 3-ward leanings) but with a strong desire to stuff stratocasters down the gobs of rock luddites. Especially rock luddites who know very little about keyboards.

Again we hear this thing about people not comprehending the difference between preprogramming a machine to perform it's part live, where it essentially takes on the role of a classical musician, ie it merely does it's best to repeat what's in front of it with as little crazy input of it's own as possible. Of course machines are even more barmy than concert violinists which is where to fun lies. There is genuine skill in setting up a song to run live, greater skill still in being the "conductor" who makes sure all the little digital and analogue beasites to your bidding with the minimum of daftness, and a true art lies in those who can run a pile of machines UNprogramemd, or at least live modified. New Order abandoned that early on, but they were MASTERS, all those early versions of the electronically based songs are superb examples of how to operate and create with machines live......I mean those EGG-temptaion-586 meddleys...."when I'm with you"....that's what they are capable of, what so many bands like mine fail to be as good at, but which people like Orbital and the Chemical Brothers have taken to new heights.

Tapes/DATS/ADATS/HDR's all of it is a con, a rip off and not in the spirit of new order ( one I learned from them). I'd rather have BM fall over half way through an approximation of the record than LISTEN TO A CD WITH BARNEY FORGETTING THE WORDS (AND FAILING TO READ THEM) LIKE SOME DEMENTED KAROKE FAILURE!!!!!!!!!!!!

There does seem a fundamental lack of understanding here about what exactly a keyboard with a MIDI or FIREWIRE of CV connection is actually UP to.

I mean I will honestly make some short test recordings with my Moog if you would like to HEAR the difference between tape and live.

Oh, and I too seem to have missed a point, I didn't realise Phil was being accused of miming over the sequenced parts. I have THOUGHT I seen that but dismissed it as him doubling the part or as sound sync ....I guess I was in denial.....miming is the work of satan and I hope the cunt's hands fall off.

Chemical wrote: I don't think Phil is miming and, if he is, he's not doing it on all the synth parts he's obliged to play (or look like he's playing).

Ahhhh....sense. Well aprt from our strict "tape is strictly for bits of old movies and open university shows to play in at random". I think I have only ever let a song play out, as arranged, unremixed, untweaked, once....and that was at the end of a 5 1/2 hr set.....I found a tune in it's studio form, loaded it, hit play and skinned up.

BTW... http://www.monomachine.com/

We have their "machinedrum"....what a fucking odd device, a pure drum synth, no samples, deadly clever and built like it was designed for knocking brick shithouses down.

Steve, you know Barney's got a Machinedrum as well...I too got one (the new UW-one with sampling) and I know they invited Daniel at Elektron backstage when they played Circus in Stockholm on the GR tour. I guess they recently bought the Monomachine as well (I great fucked up machine...got one myself) and that is good news...if they actually tend to use it in the studio that is.

By the way, would be great to have so mp3 or something like that of of those EGG-temptaion-586 medleys. Never had a chance to hear those and I certainly would like to.

On another note, and to once again agree with Steve C. and take it a bit further, sequenced stuff and things like that are norma with electronic music, I mean it goes with the medium/instrument.

You can't pretend to like people who do electronic music and than complain there's loops and everything. But, as I said before, even if it's just triggering some sequences by pressing buttons, you have to actually press those buttons, that's playing electronic music live, that's normal. And as Steve says, things at least can happen.

On the other hand, what can happen with tapes/dats/etc except for dat failures And miming over tapes must be the ultimate insult...

only heard the Demo's so far....good to know tho that NO still look for good gear outside the "big 3" manufacturers. And you have to admit their build quality is hilarious...I'm fairly sure you could run a train over the machinedrum without it skipping a semiquaver. Pretty much "roadie-proof"

Great company, great gear.

Everything really clever comes out of sheds :)

Doubly so from the band who turned down their country's top music show 2 ( or maybe 3) times cos they wouldn't let em play live....before BM's success forced their hand.

I'll see about zipping up some NO electrostupidities and figure out a way of gettin em to you.

FOr now...check out EGG and Temptation on Taras, and the entire Milan 82 gig.....the encore is beyond belief....New Order, wasted, playing a Sparks song for like 20 minutes, most of which is in the "I wonder what happens if I press this button" category.

I offered the following to a ranting guitar cave creature one day...

Right mate, set your amp, guitar, strap, pick and cable down. I'll tip out my kit bag and unload the rig from the van. Now I'll go into that room with your gear and a tape deck, and you stay in here with mine, and I'll see you in an hour to compare results.......oddly enough he mumbled something about not even knowing where the wires went and declined. ( I also made a DJ the same offer when he shot ME down for calling his lots thieves and conmen...I even offered to plug it all up and preload sounds for him....no dice....coward).

I've played 100+ gigs as a bassplayer (mainly cos at college I was fuckin rent-a-bass), and 30-50 as a "machine tamer" as I like to be called (or as a flyer once reffered to the show "live misuse of technology"). And let me tell you, playin a few string, havin a laugh, trying to ignore the singer and guitarist without losing your way, and simultaneously trying to hold a telepathic syncronisation together with the drummer.....is a lot easier than standing behind that wall of machinery....wonder what you forgot to do....wondering what the little bastards are plotting, trying to figure out which one of them's gonna go for a solo for no reason, trying to 2nd guess exactly how overloaded the Juno will be ( Campbell's first law of audio engineering "the juno is too loud"....every single time I've committed one to tape, the first time I listen back all I can hear is a juno 106 or 6 or 60 shrieking with some other sounds in the background).....and of course suddenly remembering that what you forgot to do was load the drumkit so when you throw the fader up expecting to see the hall errupot, fuck all happens and you look really stupid.

It's interesting what Chemical was saying about choosing what shou'd go in what format. Generally most stuff we do is sequenced ( tho sometimes on the fly, from empty), much of it is based on the manipulation of relatively short looping midi parts. Manipulation via MIDI, via control panels, via the sequencer, and via the mixer. We also do a bit of live playing too, things like the Moog, my bass, the occasional glissando guitar part.

BUT, I have used play-in material as an engineer, both during a bands performance and in between bands when I served as a psuedo-dj keepin the music going while things were arranged ( the best thing about the proliferation of the billions of bedroom DJ's was that it enabled to fook off to the bar between bands). And the thing I always find with prerecorded material[1], is it's impossible to match to the perfromance. If the band a sucking ass really badly, the playback can really show them up ( especially if it's only used on one or two tracks which suddenly sound spectacular), and if the band are really on fire the playback can be a total bucket of water over them.

BTW...FWIW, I think of MDF's (that's midi data filers) as exactly the same as tape. Yes the machines can still go wobbly but, there are 2 other things to take into account. 1. and MDF is a playback only unit, not an insrument in any way, it just spits out what you put in. 2. they are inavarialby used by the sorts of people who buy korg M1's and other annoying workstation machines that have shite all interactivity of their own, and rarely fail in any kind of amusing way (unless you count the M1 that exploded on stage for a jazz band I used to play in....we all cheered...hateful car-advert generating cack-pile)

EDIT:::: AND ANOTHER THING..... anyone else remember the luddite stickers on metal albums through the late 80's and 90's? "No synthesizers or samplers of ANY KIND (this is important...ANY kind) used on this recording,"

And track one opens with swathes of digital reverb on the guitars and snares, and a pre-verb and whacking great digital delay over the vocals.

Digital Delay=Automatic, user talent unrequired sampler. Digital reverb=Sampler AND often synth

Morons.

[1]In my personal way of doing things these problems never affected our sequenced stuff....but we did have a FOH engineer at a multiband night who played us in at about -40dB and treated us like programme music....that bit.

  1. Incredible.

Strangly enough I was just listening to it and yes, it is as good as I remember it. To say he and Marr hit their creative stride on that album is not to put too fine a point on it. The Patience Of A Saint gets me every time. I will never forget seeing Barney and Johnny welcome the PSBs on-stage at Wembley Hall One to do the track live as well as Getting Away With It. Apparently the lyric to GAWI is Tennant's idea of a Morrissey lyric!

As Steve says, understanding technology can be a lot more demanding than picking up a guitar, plugging it in and playing something. Most bits of tech gear have probably too many functions but then some people like them deep and complex!

I am quite amazed at what most New Order fans have settled for over the years as far as live performances go. I have always believed that regardless of how great you sound in the studio, it don't matter if you can't pull it off live. And NO are perhaps the WORST live band I have ever heard as far as performance. Barney could not carry a tune in a plastic bucket with handles. It may sound harsh and it will probably flame a few NO fans and that's ok. It does not take away from the energy or entertainment value of the band at all but my God they are an awful band live. At least Depeche Mode/Dave Gahan despite public battles with drug and drink as well has maintained good health and physical shape. Despite some describing DM's music as gay...at least live the songs sound CLOSE in tone to their studio counterparts and not only that...the synths are actually played...FOR REAL. I think NO fans have learned to tolerate the bitter taste of mediocrity when it comes to NO live performances. Now that being said...we will see in a few months if DM has suffered the same fate NO has when they begin their tour in October.

Now you're just being delusional. DM used to bring all thier drums in off tape. And their stage was full of sequencers.

Anyway...basic math....4 guys...more than four parts.

I have no problem with that (apart from the taped drums, for which I hold the current NO in equal contempt), but they do not play all the parts "live for real", some of them are played by the silicon based band members, fookin ape creatures always trying to take the credit!!

As for New Order Live....well yeah, barney's the village idiot, but so what. As I said, if they should have ANY of their set on a CD, it should be the vocals. But tape machines can't do curtis gags and grab their dicks at american audiences who just don't get it.

But Steve is one of the finest drummers I have ever heard. All of them have an imacculate sense of rhythm ( machines do not bend to suit you like a drummer will), in fact if you;ve seen NO story, Quincy Jones says they're the tightest band he ever worked with....which is pretty scary praise for a bunch of white guys from a guy who's produced some of the best RnB and Funk ever, and written some SERIOUSLY good songs (would you believe THAT song in the italian job is one of his!!?!!).

I heard a gig recently, where the sequebcer burped and started paying in like 5/4 time on the start of temptaion....Steve just joined in, and while Gillian sorted the beast, he and hooky rattled out temptation accoustically....then Gillian just drops the machine beat back in in PERFECT time, they had not lost 1 bpm after maybe 20 bars.....AND Gillian knew how to press play properly (laugh if you like, but ANYONE here who's ever ad to bring a sequencer or drummachine in by hand will know that EVERY machine needs it's own VERY special touch to get it to start when YOU want.

That ability to play so tightly against computers and living analogues is ULTRA-RARE!

If you want a live gig like a studio performance, I already suggested elsewhere....buy sound forge and load the cd in, stick a crowd sample behind it, and a bit of hall reverb, save money, stay in, and stay the hell away from any gig I'm going to cos I want to hear something UTTERLY unlike the studio version. My God in some ways NO don;t go far enough, since they stick tightly to arrangements for the most part ( tho that does make it more special when they do "go for it", especially these days). Gimme the Orb any day where you can spend ten mins just wondering what f*in song your actually hearing before the condescend to play a recognisable part.

Depeche Mode ? You gotta be kidding ! I like them but I saw them twice and it was boring and a lot of stuff was obviously taped.

Ive heard Depeche Modes backing tapes from the Violator Tour..

The only thing they had on tape were the drums, basslines, and sequencer parts. All of the other melodies were played live.

I love New Order, but DM have been and still are a lot more tech heavy than NO. While Depeche Modes first album is pretty cheesy, its totally electronic. Dm were making full on electro in 1980 when New Order were still very much a rock band, well, a dark and twisted post punk guitar band.

DM also integrated a lot of heavy sampling of Industrial song textures into thier mid 80s music. Listen to Back Celebration, its a masterpiece. There are layers and layers of synth lines and melodies, stacks of sampled vocal choruses. Metal pipes being hit, sampled, then put thru the Emulator, so that the pipe hits have picth and melody.

Also, I love Barney, But Dave Gahan and Martin Gore have beautiful voices and they harmonize well with each other.

Martin Gore is one of the finest songwriters of his generation. How many other songwriters can incorporate Electro, Synth Pop, Blues, Gospel, and 30's caberet into thier songs, sometimes all on the same album.

Ive seen DM and NO live. DM are much better. Dave and Martin sing better, and while there are mistakes, generally all the synth parts are played correctly.

I dont really care if Dm have a gay image. Thats stupid and childish to dislike a band cause of thier dress. Its the music that counts. DM have produced a lot of very moving and lovely songs. By the way, all the members of DM are married and have 3 kids, so they arent gay (though Martin Gore may have been bi back in the day).

In terms of live, DM these days have more integrity than NO. They play most of thier synth parts live, as opposed to Phil, who mimes his synth parts or playes wanky guitar while the synth is on a backing track. DM also use a live drummer, but he is no Steven Morris. :) But DM to play a lot of thier electronics live, as opposed to NO, who put most of them on a hard drive.

Dont get me wrong. I love New Order. They are one of my all time favorite bands, they have changed the world of music. And the Chicago NO show was amazing.

But Phil really should be playing his synth parts live. Not the sequenced parts, the melodies that you can play with your hands.

I will close by mentioning that Violator by DM and Technique by New Order are my two favorite electro-dance albums.

Well as I said before, if he does wave his hands over a keyboard while a machine plays it. Fuck him, he's a cock, and total scum.

But I got no problem with the machine playing....unlike DM who are scared of their tech live, always have been. Tapes are a new thing for NO, DM have always used them.

Oh, yer right bout black celebration, it's the only DM stuff I didn't grow out of ( that's not a dig at anyone, people grow out of all sorts of music). "New Dress" is one of the wisest songs ever written (as is blasphemous rumours now I come to think of it)....even more so now than ever...."hey don't worry about all those dead people.....some slut's tit fell out at the ball game"

Unfortunately, DM have that plank Andrew Fletcher in the group who does absolutely nothing at all - That waster has to be worse than Phil.

It's also funny the way some comments lament DM have a gay image, but stoically announce they are still fans. What is wrong with having a gay image in a pop band? When I first heard New Order I was sure at least one of them were gay (and I always hoped it was Gillian...) Gay is okay :thumb:

Steve,

Sure. People grow out of things. In High School DM and Public Image Limited were my favorite bands, with New Order being 4th behind the Cure...

But now I am older and I listen to New Order more than DM. A lot more. The music feels more appropriate for where I am now.

Black Celebration is a masterpiece, Ill go so far as to say that BC and Music for the Masses are better than Low Life and Brotherhood. I love the song New Dress as well...

But for me, New Order and DM are the masters of electro rock, and they are more important than Kraftwerk. KW may have started electro, but they didnt move beyond it. NO and DM did.

I think that Technque and Violator are two of the most amazing, emotional, beatiful albums ever made.

Now Steve, you are a techie. What are Phils extra synths for, he didnt have them in America, and he doesnt seem to touch them at the european shows, any idea?

The only thing I can think is that some bits are being moved back on to live machines. I suspect YSF had more live elements at southside for instance, made a heck of a noise. If it WAS from the HD recorder, someone was asleep at the wheel.

As for any further detail I dunno, they ARE cabled up with audio and control cables (based a rather fine rear panel shot from hyde or glasto) and no one goes to that trouble just to wind geeks like me up :)

Strongly disagree with that statement. How can you say New Order and DM are more important than Kraftwerk?? For me Kraftwerk are the PARENTS of all electronic music and have created timeless masterpieces that have no boundaries. From an electronic perspective, the likes of New Order (good as they are), DM and Daft Punk are amateurs when compared with Kraftwerk.

even krawftwerk were old hat in a way. There's always someone earlier (unless you're Leon Theremin (I eaglerly await someone swatting me down on that one, honestly) ) who was the inspiration for Dr Moog (incidentally Moog is of Hungarian origin....many rational scientists believe Hungarians to be Martians....honestly, please, if you do not believe me, google "hungarians are martians"....because of te STUNNINGLY high incidence of genius among them, among other strange traits).

What NO can take credit for (that DM cannot) is being part of the process that turned kraftwerk INTO Daft Punk if you see what I mean.

BTW, Daft Punk are in the same league as Leftfield and underworld and Fatbotslim....all really good till they got loads of money and discovered the peruvian marching powder....then puked out endless repeating filtered loop BILGE! Compare Underworld's first album, a swirling glory of what can be achived with electronics and creativity, with their second....a bunch of songs made from 1 bar filtered loops with droning Dalek-vocals....YAWN.

At least KW, NO AND DM managed to avoid that (notwithstanding that DM have had their problems, and New Order just ARE a drug problem :) )

Kraftwerk: without doubt the fathers of modern synth-based musics. If you think that Joy Divison/New Order have been highly influential, it rates as second to the doyens of Dusseldorf, partly because Kraftwerk themselves were huge influences on Joy Division.

Indeed, JD would often listen to the classic KW trilogy of Radioactivity, Trans-Europe Express and The Man Machine during breaks in rehearsal or at each other's homes. If you had to spell out three bands who had the biggest effect on Joy Division, it would be the Velvets, Kraftwerk and the Pistols. Add some Moroder and even Sinatra to that and you've a strange but influential brew.

Interesting contrast between Depeche and Erasure: Vince Clarke formed Depeche with Martin Gore as a guitar-based trio, only dropping them to become synth-based after a year or so. Nearly all the lines on Speak and Spell were played manually, even live. After Vince left, they continued as a trio and a fair bit went onto tape live. They expanded to a quartet with Alan Wilder but most of the basslines, drums and some sequences remained on tape.

Depeche eventually used a drummer whereas Erasure never have and they've never used tapes either, everything being either on sequencers or played live. In fact Clarke has never worked with a human drummer in over a quarter of a century!

Precision time-keeping: Steve Morris is a great drummer. Not only is he super-tight (and was even before he began using machines) but possesses a great technique and ability. He's a very creative drummer too, and should they ever decide to write something outside of the normal 4/4 time sig, I know he'd excel with it too.

The other poster is right about Gillian sorting the 5/4 thing: knowing your gear intimately means you know how to sort problems should they occur. That's something I admired about Gillian: she was as cool as a cucumber live which must have been difficult sometimes when the gear was acting up (witness G-Mex in 88 when the Emulator 2 sequencer had some probs...it was 50/50 whether it would play the sequences for Fine Time, the encore).

Something similar happened to Erasure live once: Clarke used a BBC computer sequencer in those days (late eighties) and it stopped dead in the middle of a song live. Fortunately he was playing a rhythm guitar part and kept them in time for the rest of the song with not a beat dropped anywhere. He sorted it during the break in a few moments and Andy Bell had a rare dig at Vince's former mates by saying they never use tapes live!

Ps tapes imply that you will play the same songs in the same order at every gig which can be restricting.

I've never really liked Vince Clarke's music, well liked different bits at different times and drifted away again. However, i've always like Vince for a number of reasons...

  1. To this day he's the only person I ever heard introduce each of his machines and give them a wee solo like other bands do with their carbon based members.
  2. He wrote some of the most detailed things i ever read about Fairlights...AND let the publisher take pictures of his manual.
  3. When he admitted that his neglegence caused the unfortunate death by drowning of said Fairlight.....oh if you'd seen his wee face, bless him.....he knew he'd done something on a par with shooting a unicorn or harpooning a mermaid.

All these are now offset against my newly learned reason to hate him.....he avoided proxymity to drummers for 25 yeas...JAMMY BASTARD!

And Andy Bell, well he said it better than anyone on this thread in that dig about tapes.....you plays your machines you takes your abuse on stage, you plays tapes, you take it in the next life :)

Not sure BTW Chemical that the "same order" thing applies with an HD recorder. But certainly I remember when depeche had a revox on stage with em with all the drums and it did just roll from start to end ( assume it must also have had MTC striped on it to engage the sequencers on the EII's and Emaxes (surely that's Emaxen :) )

As for Gillian's coolness....dude.....you need to see me playing to like 100 people in a dark corner in a club....I end up half naked by end of first track, and by the end of the gig I'm standing in a lake ( and I wonder why being "the band" never gets me laid LOL). Gillian is, in my opinion, an alien, potentially a TimeLady....serisouly, watch any shot of Gills changin songs or getting down and dirty on the front panels, and tell me you're not reminded of The Doctor diving round the TARDIS console(only calmer). :) My Gillian moment is the TPK vid, where just as she finishes her amazing front panel voyetra mixing, as she's about to turn away she pauses for about 50ms and flashes this look at them, ever so subtle, but it just says "these are my children, with whom I am well pleased".

EDIT: meant to say....this thing about staying in time when the machines drop out.....it's a severly rare talent, most musicians go to bits even in a band when they lose the groove. The last big Jazz band I played in was at college, 15 piece bunch who played Jazz standards, except that we were all freaks in one way or another, so it ended up sounding like gong and even hawkwind rather than dizzy gillespie. But we divided the band into Rhythm section (me, drummer and one guitar) and remedials (winds, other guitars, keys). And if the rhythm section dropped out for more than 2 bars.....good night Irene, the remedials were all over the place.....it got so bad that sometimes the drummer would destroy the mood by tramping on his hi hat thru the quiet bits....although we eventually worked out it was better for me to make deadend root-note-thumps as it was far less audible. I mean that's bad....and that's with an entirely carbon based band. Introduce silicon members, and it gets far wronger. The number of really good drummers I know who cannot play to a drum machine is terrifying. They always go into drummer mode, get into a groove and just wander off the machine until they are totally out....THEN accuse the quartz timed beatbox of drifting off the vodka timed drummer. The trick, if anyone cares, is to pretend to be doing some emergency cabling mid gig....but actually unbolt the kick drum pedal (not just the beater...th whoel pedal) and fire the fucker into the crowd or out a window.....no bass drum...no groove....no groove......brain still functioning :)

Steve Campbell wrote: even krawftwerk were old hat in a way.

For Underworld's 'first' album I assume you mean Dubnobass.... . A pedantic note, but it was their third. I can't remember the title of the first, but the second was 'Change The Weather' (1989, I think).

Hey....I'm always first in line at any pedant's revolt. I've heard tell of those, but thought they were boots (not that that makes them any less of an album of course).

Anyway, do they hold with the pre/post nose-candy hypothesis?

in that, they're great albums cos they were skint.

I should say I really liked underworld til I seen them on the same bill as Bjork.....even tho Bjork was on first and had the quieter end of the night, her dull session muso band blew underworld to DUST. Their set was uninspred, lazily constructed ( all the songs even Born Slippy) used the same 2 drum parts. Except rez/cowgril...there was a big stop and relod before that. Just shows that havin your machines live is no garauntee you wont suck balls :)

I am most grateful to the indeed comprehensive given by the right honourable member to the post I posted some moments ago!

Not sure BTW Chemical that the "same order" thing applies with an HD recorder. But certainly I remember when depeche had a revox on stage with em with all the drums and it did just roll from start to end ( assume it must also have had MTX striped on it to engage the sequencers on the EII's and Emaxes (surely that's Emaxen )

Could've been either MIDI timecode or SMPTE but you are therefore reliant on the thing running perfectly smoothly as everything is locked too it. Gulp!

I had to smile about Mr Clarke's Fairlight dying a watery death. How did that happen? He apparently toyed with the heretical idea of giving up music completely after Yazoo wound up and I can see that his pet instrument dying a death would've been traumatic. I saw Erasure on the Tiny Tour (96) when he had them all piled up about fiften foot tall and would scale the rig to adjust a knob or whatever!

The man's a consumate genius, especially for not employing drummers at any time.

As for the delectable Gillian, she had this really feminine grace behind her keys (and when she played guitar) that's difficult to articulate properly. Mostly she'd keep her head down whilst Barn was busy telling everyone they were cunts or something and Hooky was giving it loads. I recall Wembley in 87 when she was the only member not to remove her shirt as time went on, although I feel that, had she done so, a riot may have ensued!

She just limited herself to the odd shy smile during some sort of on-stage high jinks and never seemed flustered by anything going out of tune, failing to load, breaking down etc. She's missed and that's a fact.:bow2:
