Clutching at straws here but there seem to be several references or posible references to the demise of factory in republic, here is a list of some potential ones:

Regret: (The title) "I would like a place I could call me own" Barney striving for independence from the careful living of the factory days. "You used to be a stranger now you are mine" (His money?) "You may think thay I'm out of hand, if I'm naieve I'll understand on this occasion its not true" Typical factory argument

World: "And when this building is on fire these flames can't burn any higher I turn sideways to the sun and in a moment I am gone" The hacienda and Barney washing his hands of it?

Ruined In A Day: (Again the title) "Some people like to deceive you While others may feel that they need you" "But stop acting like a child Every step we take is the one That's gonna undo what you've done It could take all day"

Everyone Everywhere: "At the end of the day, there's no food on our plate" "People change but we don't falter" "You were once the main attraction but now that's in the past"

Young Offender: "Words cannot heal when a line is your lover" the increased use of cocaine

Liar: (Again the title, the song is even played when Tony Wilson is on camera in the Neworder Story) "I haven't time to sympathise With all this nonsense and your lies You are the king of nothing But you sharehold me You've got your finger on the pulse And in my pocket, yes of course I am the voice of treason But you betrayed me"

Chemical: "Constantly harrassed and misunderstood. I'm the 'lost and found' of the neighbourhood"

Times Change: (Title) "Life will never be the same" "Ever strange the lives we lead So detached from the things we need Signs of greed in everyone Instant eviction and the blood on a gun Just when you think you've found it Spinning world I want to spin around it What is wrong? This pain won't peel The fibres of my life won't heal"

Special: "It was always special It was like water down the drain I'm intoxicated Every time I hear your name I try to remember But nothing is the same"

Seems to make sense than me. More so than my theory that Dead Souls is written about telephone salesmen.

I liked the part about Dead Souls "They keep calling me".

I think we can safely say that Bernard was pretty bitter about the collapse of Factory, as he believed he was owed around half a million. He was, but the money Factory owed him was offset by the money owed to Factory by The Other Two and Revenge!

Joe,

You're basically right. It has been written about in the press before (see the Claude Flowers book). Liar is most transparent. The only thing I'd add is that some of it is probably about the tensions and splits in New Order too. I thought Raise the Pressure continued this theme on some tracks as well.
