Now this isnt another top five. These are 5 songs that i have been playing a lot lately. Even my top 5 NO songs get some rest sometimes.

  1. Spooky- I rediscovered this gem. I never particulary really gave this song much thought before. Sort of uplifting.
  2. Faceup-charming how Barney sounds like a teenager on this one.
  3. I told you so- becoming my fav song on the new one.
  4. Dream attack- One of barney's most personal songs
  5. Loveless- "watching any fool you will take" same as #4

never did know why he called it Face Up, as face down was probably more appropriate for Barney at this stage!

Its funny how some songs you overlook, only to later find come under your favourites. Barney always sounds like a teenager. Its a fault of his lyrics over the decades. But he can write decent lyrics (Flicker from Raise The Pressure is one of the best) when he puts his mind to it.

Loveless is one of the most un-New Order songs theyve ever done. I often wish they made more acoustic songs. Simple but beautiful.

Dream Attack is just a great track. Great melody. But then I think the whole Technique album is so good because they hold back and just make great music. No guitar or bass takes over any one track and they must have enjoyed making that one.

Its cos when he went to photocopy the lyrics to Rob Gretton, Barney realised that he didnt have a song title. So he looked at the first thing he saw. And as he placed the paper iinto the photocopier he saw the words "face up".

My usual top 5 consists of all the songs like True Faith, 1963, BLT etc.. but after listening to them so much, they kind of get boring so you have to take a break.

Recently though, i've really been getting into Brotherhood. I overlooked this album before, and just didn't find it that interesting. After giving it a few more goes though, all I can say is wow, it's excellent. Highlights for me are Weirdo, Way of Life, and of course Bizarre Love Triangle. Angel Dust is also great. There's just a nice quality to songs like Weirdo and Way of Life. It's the stage Bernard was experimenting with layered lyrics far more often, and I think the results are great.

"as it was....", i never really like it until i heard live recordings of it. Would sound brillant next to "regret".

Had a 2hr schlep home after the bombings last Thursday and couldn't be arsed, for once, to fast forward past "Liar" when it appeared randomly on me MP3, and there's quite a nice bass break of about 10secs maybe 3mins in. Probably the first time I've heard that since 1993.

Mind, I'm the bloke who never knew which Killers track had the line "soul/soldier" in it cos I'd always forwarded past that track after the first 10secs cos I didn't like the intro. When I read the title of what they'd played at Live8 I said it was something I'd never heard before, until someone pointed out it was the "soul/soldier" offering.

Liar's a great track Al. Give it a couple more spins and think of AHW. Perfectly biting lyrics by Bernard. Good to see you're (almost) coming to your sense on this one.
