I wanted to introduce myself and ask a question

I'm a newbie. Both to New Order and this forum. I'm 23, from North Carolina. New Order has never toured anywhere near here so maybe that explains why I didn't hear of them until late in life. I was first exposed to New Order and Joy Division a few years back from a friend. He had Joy Division's Substance album which we listened to driving to Atlanta one weekend. I actually didn't like it at first because it seemed rather slow and dull. Of course, he wasn't playing it very loud either. I've always enjoyed such classics as "Blue Monday," but it wasn't until I picked up their Substances album that I really began to see what NO was all about. I don't have a lot by them, right now. I have Substance, Low Life, PC & L, Technique, and a the new one. I love the new album. And I have the Heart and Soul boxed set from Joy Division. I also have the Jetstream single which was released. I hope to build on it in time. I have plenty of time to listen to all the great music NO has recorded over the years and continues to record.

BTW, where are some good sources for history of the band? I really like to know the most I can about a band. Any books you might recommend?

Yes, many people here enjoy substances. Pity you didn't discover New Order until such a ripe old age, but welcome, newbie!

there are some books about joy division/new order, but imo, i think they aren't written very well (most of them at least). i like deborah curtis' book about ian (touching from a distance).

I suggest "True Faith - An Armchair Guide to New Order, JD, Electronic, Revenge, Monaco and The Other Two by Dave Thompson. There's the entire catalogue of all the albums, singles, remixes and live JD and NO gigs in that book. Brilliant!

Yep, of all the album and single sleeves including:

Ian Curtis, Rainbow Theatre, London, November 1979 NO members, La Mutualite, Paris, 1987 Finsbury Park 2002 New Order, Paris, May 1993 by David Sultan :) and some others

Thank you, Maja. I just think of buying it. You know, just for looking thru the pages on the coffee table, coz as far as the information is concerned we can obtain it here at the site.

But if it'd have more pictures I'd make my mind up quicker :) I had that Claude Flowers book but meaninglessly presented it to a friend of mine a few years ago. That book was really good Ok, going to check the Amazon.com :)

the true faith book is good for a discography, but deborah curtis' book is the best on JD and if you want pictures, brian edge's pleasures & wayward distractions is probably the best option. it's a bit dated now (even the updated version was, what, 1987?), but still a good peruse.

Hello Speaksy:D Looks like you have the makings of a New Order fanatic.. with that thirst for knowledge you own,looks like you need Brotherhood adding to your albums for a start:love ...My biggest tip would be to get your mitts on as much live stuff flying round on this site,by the wonderful people who share, and spread the word of The Order ....This site is THE source on New Order in this age..I think all would agree..Big shout to Nicos who does a class job with this site..New order's best public relation's guy..enjoy your New Order mate:...And try to forgive the band Jetstream

well there's boots, but there's "official" releases and the "other official releases" One lot come from the record company, and the other from whatever bag of tapes Hooky has most recently accidentally left somewhere then accidentally let that fact be known to some people who like such things.

Purelivegigs has a couple on it ( I assume that means they;ve given consent, or that it's inferred by default from Hooky's booting activities). Dimeadozen too. That's if you're broadband ( when we gonna dump that term, we're now right back in "wideband" territory with current connection speeds) enabled and torrent literate. Else just wander round this place looking needy for long enough and someone will rescue you.

As for the offical stuff, PFD rules 3:16 rocks. 5:11 and Taras (included on 3:16 now) are bloody good too. Avoid Accedemy, it's not a great gig, sounds very muffled ( my copy anyway) and was edited by someone who'd just got some new software AAAAAARRRGGGHHH!!

Honestly tho, you MUST get some live stuff. If I might paraphrase Wells.... "Those of you who have never heard a living New Order gig, can scarcely imagine the strange horror of their performance"

It's not as much fun getting into them right now because they are EVERYWHERE and finally being recognised for what they have achieved. Back in the day, I went about 2 years, having only ever seen one picture of them. They seemed quiet, moody, deep and intelligent....and you seen so little of them that it took a while for the truth to sink in. And OH GOD the joy when you realise they're less like some ultra depressive pretentious shite ( HELLOOOO Mr R. Smith) goth ponce lot, and actually much more closely related to Spinal Tap. You;ve got so much good music, and so many hilarious gigs ahead of you, I almost envy you .

I am not quite so jaded as to who New Order were and their contributions to music. I've been aware of them for a few years now, as I mentioned, but it hasn't been until recently (December) that I picked up my first album and listened to it without being asked. I only regret not having the chance to enjoy the high and lows of their career like many other people here have. Nonetheless, there seems to be a great amount of music to get into. I hope I can find these live recordings as easy as you make it sound.

good DVDs mentioned above (316 and 511 and taras), and for JD, there's here are the young men on video.

whenever they play live, people will always mention it beforehand here and there's usually a live stream somewhere on the net. not much left this summer, though.

also, go to the audio/video link at the top of the page and click on 'live track' on the left. there are a number of tracks uploaded you can listen to there. :)

It will be the second album I will have witnessed being released by New Order which will be very cool. I have no immediate plans of deserting. I do love the music.
