Well, I find it funny he says that sense I thought that they had a few before that including transmission, Ceremony, Atmosphere, etc. Are they not indie records?
Anything by Factory. Virgin used to be an independant, when did Tubular Bells come out. I'm sure there must have been a few indi/self pulished records even before Factory, just can't be bothered to do the research righ now.

I think the first indie record is the Spiral Scratch EP by the Buzzcocks, produced by 'Martin Zero'

As were lots of early rock 'n' roll records before that, some of that Sun Records stuff sold a copy or two, I think (according to my dad anyway....;) ).
