For those about to Rock (The Shack), we salute you

Call me crazy, but after listening to a little RTS yesterday, it seemed to me that might be the best choice to break into the American singles charts. I can't really say why, but it would just seem natural to hear RTS over the airwaves. Am I alone in this?

Hell yes, it makes sense. DJs across the nation could include it in a "Twofer Tuesday Non-Stop Rock Block" with the Strokes.

The guest spot by Sloppy Guiseppe -- I mean, Bobby Gillespie -- gets you nowhere in the U.S., but the guy does have that unwashed quality that is so popular here right now among the lite metal set. XTRMNTR could break into the charts, even.

yep,it has a memorable chorus thats easy to remember when drunk.a definite hit.

I find that RTS is probably my favorite track from GR. I think that it would receive a great response from air play (if it could get it).

Do I think? no, honestly. Would I like to see that or TMW as a single? yes, those are the two best keys to American radio (but if they gave a damn about radio play, would we still love them?)

Yeah, must agree with you all.... recently I seemed to be enjoying this RTS...though 3 months ago I fucking hate this song!!!! BUT nOW.....YEAH...THIS SONG ROCKS!!!!! Has some sense of urgency in the beat which is a bit lacking in recent NO songs.

I have a feeling it would do well. I think it would get significant play on mainstrem radio here in Oz (Just imagine hoon rock MM introducing NO to their line up, i am wetting myself already). I think the reasons it would be a good radio track are the same reasons it would be a good festival song, it rocks, you can groove to it a bit and as someone has pointed out you don't have to be a Mensa to remember all the words!

I agree! Rock the Shack is so stupid it would appeal to the rest of the deaf and blind assholes that listen to mainstream radio stations in America. Stupid songs for stupid people.

Of course i did not intend to lump this forum's users into that catagory. If I used the smilies, my intentions would come across better but i can't be bothered learning the codes.

When I was stocking shelves, the best/strangest thing I ever got to hear was a Muzak version of "Welcome to the Pleasuredome." That really put the mental back in instrumental.

I do not listen to neworder because i enjoy noisy rock and roll. Therefore, Rock the Shack will always be skipped by me. I hate rock music. There's no life in it and when rip-off bands (strokes, white stripes) make their millions doing what everyone else with guitars + drums has done before them, i get pissed (angry, not drunk). Rock is dead, Rock is Dead...it's time you knew that Rock is Dead!!!

Sure, Rock may be dead, but it had a good life (Beatles, VU, Stooges, JD, Pistols, Clash, Who, Ramones, Kinks, et etc)

yes it did tabsy but we don't need a bunch of second rate assholes all glammed-up with nowhere to go. Why make a career out of copying someone elses music? I'll tell you...because they don't have any fucking talent or at least not enough to have their own style. What are gonna do with guitars that hasn't been done before? It's self serving bullshit. The Beatles were great but Oasis were assholes for copying their style. Who does Your Silent Face sound like? It can only be NewOrder because (until Slow Jam/Rock the Shack) they didn't make a career out of leaching onto someone elses stlye.

I wouldn't say rock is all left out of ideas, remember that when Buddy Holly et al died at the end of the Fifties, everyone said rock would fade away. Then, four or five years later, during the teenybopper shite so very well exemplified by Frankie Valli and the like, the Beatles came along and suddenly rock was vital again. After the rot of the Sixties set in, and those that were starving artists in the previous decade became cocaine-sniffing millionaires in the 70s, punk and disco came along to show the extremes to which rock could still go. With Rap in the Eighties, suddenly you saw the reemergance of the social group most responsible for the early rock records, black men, now talking about urban realities that you could dance to. I wholeheartedly believe something will come along to up the establishment, so i can't say rock is dead just yet, it's a little comatose for now
