Turn My Way

After all these months, GetReady has got better and better and reached classic status in my collection, up there with LowLife and Technique IMHO.

EXCEPT for Turn My Way, which was grating back in September and only worse at this point. I just don't think the 2 voices complement each other, and think it was a major mistake to feature Corgan. I admire Corgan and am not one of these Brits who has a hate-hate relationship with him (for some reason he is not revered at all over there, and they think he is a secondrate grungerocker and not the melodic genuis he is, far more talented and faceted than the onetrick pony angstboy cobaine)

BUT, ahem, Corgan just does not work on this song, and their voices worst of all are not mixed well, which would have been required, some studio trickery to perhaps save this disastrous duet. I sincerely think that if they released a mix with only Sumner it would be far superior.

Corgan is excellent, but this duet fails, especially now the more I have heard it. I regularly skip over this track.

I love the rest of the LP, more now than ever, and wish it would get more airplay in the states, and a proper tour here (PLEASE!!!) but have deleted Turn My Way from my PCs WMP mix... bad bad idea, that I think was allowed only because Hook and Morris and Sumner all thought having some starpower was a 'good idea at the time'. I am sure all 3 now secretly regret this inclusion. Even Corgan I am sure is bummed at the final product, knowing that he pissed on a New Order album, most likely kept him up a few nights this autumn in regret. Too bad. I wish they had realized all this prior to the release.

A mix with Corgan on some single backside would have been cool, but to marr the album is tragic.

Bummer. Though, I guess they had to have ONE bad track on the LP, in keeping with all their prior LPs...

TMW is like my second or third favorite on the album. I guess it's time for the Turn My Way Appreciation Society (TMWAS, "Tim Was")

I've never heard any Smashing Pumpkins stuff So I can't comment on Billy The Corgan generally, I just remember he was splashed all over the tabloids when he once wore a sarong or something a la David Beckham.

However, I do thing that TMW is a great song and IMO certainly in the Top 3 along with Crystal and SLY from GRrrr. It sounds different and more melodic than some of the other tracks from GRrrr and while the lyrics are abit trite I think they work very well and are classic Barney.

Though the song could still work well live with just Barney singing I reckon and could perhaps replace 60 mph in the setlist.

Mat, In an earlier poll in which all Get Ready tracks were rated I put TMW on third place ,after Crystal and Primitive Notion. I would still put it there. I think it's a great track, even though I think Billy Corgan's presence does not make a lot of difference. It does not add a lot, but it doesn't bother me either. Anyway I agree with your comments on Billy Corgan; Smashing Pumpkins were a great band, especially Siamese Dreams and Mellon Collie were great albums.

Both Barney and Corgan have unusual voices and i actually thinks it really works for this track. Corgans sillibant whisper to introduce Barneys lyrics, so filled with longing really works for this track. I rate it as one of my favorites from the album. And the smashing pumkins did rule when for thier first couple of albums, after that i got a bit fed up.

TMW is nearly my No.1 track in GR..... Look at the poll....looks like many NO fans agree. Yes, I agree that Billy Pumpkin voice is a bit soft...but the instrumentation, riffs, etc... is great!!!

I really like this song also, the "I drank in every bar in town..." part of the song is one of the best moments on the album i think.

Well, on the CDs I burn with my favorite songs from everywhere, it's 'Turn My Way' that I picked up to be part of the selection. Truly magnificent. Classic.

But I agree on Corgan. I don't like everything he's done but I love "Today".

Turn My Way is loads better than Slow Jam but i agree that Corgan was totally unnecessary and a touch of starfucker syndrome. Aren't we all so famous, gee i really enjoy your work etc...Multitrack barney's voice or have Gillian sing the extra lines. Corgan's intro to the track "take my hand..." is extremely out of place and a mistake by the person at the mixing desk.

Smashing Pumpkins were/are SHIT. MTV/Rolling Stone hype machine worthless rock and roll. Billy Corgan should disappear before he gets big headed and releases a solo album. Maybe Cogan and the rest of the losers that made up Nirvana should start a HasBeen super-group.

I am deeply sorry but I must disagree with you on this statement.

Turn My Way is one of my favorites on the album. I am not a HUGE pumpkins fan but I have to say I am one of the few who actually like his voice. It is different and intreguing.

His help on the song just made it that much more interesting. I LOVE Barney's voice and I could listen to him for hours but to hear another interesting voice along side of his is just wonderful.

The lyrics are another wonderful idea. I don't think they could have described my life any better. Most NewOrder fans are ones that don't want to be flashy and just want to sit back and enjoy the music. I think that is why the words hit home with many fans.

Overall I love the song (if you couldn't already tell) but everyone has their own opinion and that is what this message board is for.

I think that TMW is right up there with the great tracks from the GR, but i think it would have been better off with Corgan singing the entire song, with just barney chipping in here and there.

YES!!YES!!YES!!

I do like TMW a lot. Corgan's voice doesn't add a lot to the song, but his guitar playing does! I'm surprised that nobody has commented about this.

Talking of Barney singing alongside other artists reminds me of the Electronic collaboration with PSB, dont get me wrong i really really like PSB's music - but despite Neil Tennant being generally acclaimed as having a superb singing voice i thought that on Patience of a Saint - Barney's singing pissed all over his!!

Corgan is a fine complement to this song, but only 1 please!!!

I must admit that when I read all the media hype about Corgan and Primal Scream featuring on Get Ready I was a bit sceptical to say the least. In fact I feared the worst. However, you hardly notice the runt Corgan in Turn My Way, and RTS is possibly improved by some Primal Screaming !
