chart attack: New Order Not Bothered By The Bravery

You could hardly blame Peter Hook if his blood boiled over from watching The Killers and The Bravery accuse each other of copycatting. After all, both bands — as well as countless others in the latest wave of dance-punk — have freely ripped off from a blueprint that he helped create in the '80s with New Order. But unlike Killers frontman Brandon Flowers, Hook takes no offense at hearing traces of his sound in the work of others.

"It doesn't really bother me. I mean, it's great. I've had a fantastic life, I've got a fantastic job with New Order. Am I going to worry about some bands sounding like us? The answer is no."

After more than a quarter-century in pop music, Hook has developed a veteran's laid-back perspective. He knows that no one can touch the legacy of either New Order or the band whose ashes it rose from, Joy Division, and so he's content to watch the newcomers battle it out in the media. He does acknowledge, however, that in his younger days, soundalike bands used to get his goat.

"I might have been a little annoyed when The Cure did it in the '80s with 'In Between Days' and things like that, but now I view it as a compliment. You know, for someone like The Killers to say they're inspired by you is fantastic in the same way that I told the Sex Pistols I was inspired by them."

It might be the first and last time The Killers are favourably compared to the Sex Pistols, but the bassist — "Hooky" to his friends — is full of genuine praise for the Las Vegas band. He's also happy to throw a bone to one of his musical descendants in the U.K.

"I think that Bloc Party record is a great record. You can tell that it comes from the heart, it comes from the soul, it comes from instruments. It doesn't come from a computer. And that, to me, is a beautiful thing when you can do that."

Hook feels New Order have done that with Waiting For The Siren's Call, and though he would've liked the new album to be "a lot rougher," he believes it's a worthy addition to the band's legendary canon. The experience of making it also gave him time to reflect on a storied career. "It wasn't until we started to work on this record that we realized we'd been doing it for 28 years. It was a shock."

If there is a secret to such longevity, Hook says he's blissfully unaware. "We are the worst people to publicize New Order. We don't do a thing and this thing just keeps going on. We're very lucky."

And the last thing he's going to do is discourage others from following in his rock star footsteps. "I highly recommend it, kids, if you can do it," he laughs. "Without a shadow of a doubt, it's a great job."

just goes to show what a top bloke hooky is ,im sure many others in ere would agree. bands have been treading in new orders footsteps since the early eighties but that said new order have done the same with other bands but its good to see hooky being so cool about it. but can any bloody journo out there do a piece on new order without "ashes?rose from" ect i seriously doubt it.:\ohwell:

The Cure fans absolutely hate Hooky. I'm not a Cure fan, just interested in some of their music. I was in one of their forums and they didn't like Hooky at all.

I'm not sure if I'm in the minority here but I much prefer The Bravery album to The Killers one. There's something about that Brandon Flowers guy that I just don't like. Well a few things actually: His last name, the way he dresses, his pretentious "brothers and sisters" speech to Live 8, his keyboard that looks like it's been mugged by a Christmas tree etc.

Whereas The Bravery seem like pretty cool guys and the lead singer seems to have some sort of proper stage presence. 'An Honest Mistake' was the first song in a while to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Sure, it's pastiched to buggery and owes alot to New Order, Cure etc. but it's a good song at the end of the day which carries it off in my opinion. I'd much rather listen to a New Order sounding record any day than a heavy metal or plastic pop one. Alot of the other tracks on that Bravery LP have grown on me too.

I was surprised to hear Hooky say "I think they're crap" of The Bravery in that Studio Brussels interview, he seemed to have a real problem them! But on the other hand he's hugging and cozying up to Brandon Flowers? :skeptic: Also Flowers let himself down by having a hissy fit at The Bravery for "stealing their sound" which just made him look like a jealous prick. I think he was probably shit scared after hearing 'An Honest Mistake' his little band may have met their match.

Heres how I see it.

Hooky = New Order's saving grace, the master of melody, the god of bass. the killers = cheap wannabees from a cheap place. the bravery = slowy growing on me, and have an interesting tweek to the new order influenced sound (namely the guitar) which just sounds cool on there stuff like honest mistake. Waiting for second album Bloc Party = Best out of all them, Banquet is great. Lyrics are a bit daft.

All in all, Hooky has some ok children.

I'm always turned off by the notion that "you can like one band, but not the other", a mentality that seems pretty prevelant in other fan bases. I'd like to think NO have a more open-minded fan base in terms of music, if not in terms of sexual orientations :evil4:

(just kidding :p )

Anyway, how could anyone hate Hooky? He's Hooky, for fuck's sake! :nonono:

I think that the cure is great, I liked them before NO. So I think that those damn cure fans need to open up a bit. Who are they to hate hooky right? Joy Division made the cure who they are. Bah, its ok, I'll forgive them. Now, the cure has some great songs and albums, but I don't think they stack up to new order. Although there more recent out put has been great. But they seem to still follow New Order because Get Ready/Blood Flowers = Great. wftsc/the cure = few good songs, rest rubbish that will probably grow on me in the coming years.

hmm. i think there are many new order fans that either came to them from the cure, or went to the cure from new order. i was an old cure fan who discovered new order because of their nebulous connections... my love of the cure has somewhat faded over the years, but i've never heard any outright hatred coming from cure fans... maybe a little jealousy, but i don't think a statement like "cure fans absolutely hate hooky" is really all that fair. maybe "some cure fans find hooky to be annoying" or something like that. i don’t hate hooky and i'm a cure fan. there. actually almost every cure fan i know personally is also a new order fan to some degree. the people in the cure forums, let's face it, are the most rabid fans (a-hem), and are probably a bit younger and more prone to such base emotions than the average cure fan.

Aren't the Bravery a manufactured band?! Which makes them a bit of an in-joke straight from the off?!

Al Jarvis wrote: Aren't the Bravery a manufactured band?! Which makes them a bit of an in-joke straight from the off?!

I don't think so. Manufactured would imply they've been assembled, styled and had their songs written for them by some musical svengali. According to the sleeve notes they wrote all their own stuff and lead singer Tom Endicott produces everything. Plus from live performances it's been established they can play pretty well. Nobody's denying their influences are pretty obvious, but then again so are The Killers.

So I fail to see how they're manufactured?

Guess someone told me, and I was just repeating that verbatim. Try googling "the bravery" and manufactured though - seems the rumour spread far and wide.

Doesn't AgentWood know their lead singer?!

the bravery are a manufactured band. the singer was in Skabba the Hut, a ska band at the start of the wholesale pillaging of PostPunk/New Order sound. Label pushed them to jump on the bandwagon. Fake ass bitches! The Bravery = music for people who are too lazy to switch off the radio and discover music on their own. Not that the Killers are any better. You people realize this is a FAD and these bands won't make it to album 3 in the public eye.

who cares if sam was in a ska band? he also used to have long hair and wear a baseball cap! perhaps the image is a bit contrived, but he's always been very into music and being a musician. why take digs at him for that? if you don't like them, fair enough. but sam writes his own music.

You're overanalysing it and being a bit snooty about the whole thing. I picked up the CD for less than a tenner, put it on and the first couple of tunes sound pretty good to my ears.

That's all that counts really, and I'm more than capable of discovering my own music thanks.

you may not care because you know him, but credibility does matter to me. The Bravery are on the 2nd wave of this sound and quite obviously switched their sound to sell more records. this is dishonest to me, regardless of whether he wrote his own songs or not. they are so obviously dressed and directed by record label personnel in order to appeal to 17year old girls who live for MTV and what's worse is they are going along with it like puppets rather than making the music they want to make. if new Order had come out with a Grunge record in 93 instead of Republic, i would have slated them for that too. the point is, these guys are pawns in a record labels game and happily so, therefore not deserving of my time. if others here don't care about the sort of things that matter to me, then fair play. no one is forcing me to listen and no one really cares what i think but i enjoy expressing my polarizing opinions.

Ok, this reminds me a lot of David Bowie, the musical Chameleon. People change, no one seems to hate Bowie for it. And by the way, if I had a full band right now and an electric guitar I would be doing the same thing. I love New Order, and even if thats the in thing I'd be making electro rock too. I think what seperates the Bravery is the fact that they can be distinguished from the other bands by there sound. Sure its layered with techno but you can still here hints of Ska in it, and the vocals are quite good as well. Brandon flowers sound quite weird to me. In my opinion if you write your own music and do all your own stuff and it sounds good to boot you can do whatever you want to, even if its a trend. Who knows, they may be around for 6 more albums. Bands tend to reinvent themselves sometimes, like Blur and like New Order. So lets just enjoy the ride, what can we do anyway? We can only wait for something else to come along. Which is just what this is, something else than before.

you don't recall the mounds of shit Bowie got for making a Drum and Bass tune? it's pointless anyway, music can be overanalyzed or enjoyed for what it is, either way we win in the end.

Next, i'd like to say thanks to my mother for believing in me even when i was listening to Culture Club and Kiss. And finally, i'd like to thank all of you, for it's you i truly love to piss off. i'm starting a new band called The Snobbery. Our sound will be a cross between Coldplay and Missy Elliot with a bit of Gang of Four thrown in for good measure. Featuring guest vocalists Damon from Blur and that cocksucker from Radiohead. Our label will pay radio stations to play our songs and our video will be stylishly shot and immediately placed on heavy rotation on MTV.

*Subject to change in order to fully capitalize on the current musical trend.

Is that right, now? I hate it when bands do that just to make money. Fakers indeed! I don't see any evidence of The Killers having done that, which to my mind makes them a hell of a lot more credible than The Bravery could ever hope to be.

Thanks for the advice. I would remind you that it is BLT who is being antagonistic and has admitted as much as it's giving him one hell of a thrill at work. You seem to be jumping on his bandwagon  All I have responded with is a few light hearted pisstakes, hardly the most offensive comments on the planet. BLT himself declared that if you like The Bravery you're too stupid to find your own music, something which I find extremely antagonistic and childlike as I think the Bravery LP contains a couple of good tunes. You pop up after each of his posts like an echo. As for your typo thing, that was a bit of harmless fun and if you can't take it the way it was meant without getting uppity you're the one who needs to chill out mate.

Anyway, we were having a fairly reasonable debate about the New Order angle on The Killers vs. The Bravery before BLT bulldozed his way in with his slightly extreme views. You're not really one for respecting everyone elses opinions are you Brian?

I personally don't have anything more to contribute to this thread as it's not a reasoned debate, it's a lecture from Mr BLT and this leewhatsisbloke on what the gospel truth is on The Bravery.

Their music pretty much soundtracked my teenage years once I was given a Joy Division compilation. I hunted down most of the New Order/Side projects back catalogue and quickly became a "daily fan" from late '96 onwards. Plus the band themselves seem to be down-to-earth lads/girl who refuse to play the pop game or whore themselves to the industry; very admirable considering their peers such as U2 have become lumbering corporate machines. Something to aspire to I would say.

from ally's profile. Kinda contradicts what hes been saying.

The Bravery aren't U2 last time I checked. I do like credibility as I correctly said in my profile but I've yet to be convinced that The Bravery are as wholly fabricated as you and BLT seem to think. I'd love to see your music industry credentials which give you authority on where The Bravery come from? I clearly explained why I liked their songs and admitted their influences come across as pretty strong. I never said they were original but a few of their tunes were quite good.

I suggest you drop this now because you're really starting to look like a class one wanker mate. Your arrogance is extremely impressive though, you're determined to prove your point as the absolute right here whereas I'm just interested to hear differing opinions without being too judgemental.

You don't like The Bravery and that's fair enough.

Thanks Brian for the remotely diplomatic post, it's a pity your 'echo' seems much more determined to run his point into the ground.

Anyway I don't even like the fucking Bravery that much, I think their LP is ok but I wouldn't rush out and buy any of their singles per se. I was simply wondering why The Killers get alot of preferential treatment by both the music press and Hooky himself while The Bravery seemingly get a lot of flack (as heard in the Studio Brussels interview MP3). Especially as they're quite similar sounding and from a similar "scene". However engineered that scene is.

Anyway I think this thread has been kind of run into the ground, so unless the 'echo' has anything further to add (I'm wagering he's rummaging through my profile as I type this) let's consider this little debacle over.

The Bravery/Killers rivalry is quite laughable. A matter of territorial pissings in a largely disposable 'new wave' of post-punk. I like neither and I am a bit disappointed Bernard and Hooky have taken a liking to the Killers. Brandon Flowers said in a Rolling Stone interview, and this is nearly verbatim, that he would die onstage to play with Bono. The guy's got stars in his eyes with very few ace tunes up his sleeve.

Out of all the bands that have a kind of 'indie garage-punk/post-punk' sound, the only two I've respect for are the Strokes (solely because of the songwriting on the first album) and Interpol. Like most everybody else, I slagged of Interpol for sounding like a JD rip-off. But such was unfair, and their second album really proved they are a developing band with their own distinct sound.

Most artists when asked if they would reccomend their career/do it over again/let their kids do it they talk about how how much it ruined their lives, how they hated it, how they'd never let their children do it...but if they had to do it all over again they would. Refreshing to see someone like Peter Hook not give such an idiotic response :thumb:

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! I never thought anyone on NOOL would have such bad taste. Interpol are still a bunch of JD copyists and as for the Strokes, don't get me started; words can't describe how much I despise that band. They're the biggest fakers out there!

to me this next "wave" of New Wave, is all phoney, just like the 2nd Generation of punk. its lost some credibility, and the music is generic. it appeals to younger kids who missed the older bands and are dying to live in the 80s, as does the New Punk with the late 70s, but to the older people its just rehashed. it gets old quickly when every band you see are dressing in 80's suits with skinny ties. there are more bands like than now than in the 80's basically it boils down to the music, if you make good music you dont need the suits and the hair and the pouting face.

Well, its obvious we all like very different bands. But lets not argue over it anymore than we already have. Now I've been listening to Hard-Fi and Kasabian. And I think the strokes have some good songs. But if you guys are looking for something original and really different I recommend the Japanese Rock scene. Sure language barrier, but I think that there music is just incredible.

Well, since my taste is considered so bad because of my liking the Strokes and Interpol, I might as well admit the worst of my offenses. I really like Rick Springfield's 'Jessie's Girl'. What's wrong with a bit of cheese? For chrissakes, New Order themselves have manufactured some over time.

What's wrong with a bit of cheese? For chrissakes, New Order themselves have manufactured some over time.

Dotn worry about it. She's in a minority. And anyway, i think you'll find more people like Interpol than some of the bands that she likes. Not a huge fan of the strokes myself, but of it wasnt for them, chances are we'd still all be being force fed nu metal and "gangster" rap, instead of the most vibrant music scene we'd have in decades.

That reminds me, i must find the other person who intends to buy Black Rebel Motorcycle Clubs next album...

don't kid yourself. BRMC are hugely popular. at least here on the west coast where every hipster can be seen wearing a faded BRMC tee and skin tight, black highwaters that perfectly compliment their low-top black Chuck Taylor converse sneakers. i'd say they are exponetially more popular than both Killers and The Bravery here in Seattle.

Well, about as popular as leprosy over here at the moment. Couldnt even fill academy 2! Re: Order and the Other Smiths got more people in there!

OOh,don't knock Interpol! Their first album does borrow influences shamelessly from JD,Chameleons and the Smiths, but they are passionate at what they do.by the time ANTICS came out, they've adopted a sound of their own,and an absolutely brilliant live band. Could never understand the NO/Cure rivalry.Must admit I was pissed when "The Walk" shamelessly photocopied "Blue Monday",but it proved to be a one-off.:music:

The funny thing is, the Cure actually existed before Joy Division, yet Robert Smith has felt compelled to imitate both Joy Division and New Order. My favorite Cure album is Boys Don't Cry (I realize it's a stateside release) because it's naive and ramshackle pop. Their albums stacked against those of New Order pale overall. Head on the Door compared to Brotherhood? Disintegration compared to Technique? The New Order albums sound effortless yet genuinely passionate, and Smith fails to match that fluidity. Don't get me wrong, I like the Cure a fair amount, but they've ripped plenty from JD/NO. More so than a modern band like Interpol. For those who bother to listen beyond the admittedly derivative quality of Paul Banks' singing on Turn On the Bright Lights, you'll find a band working hard at their craft. Antics is great and I look forward to their third album.

I wonder why it is some people immediately put up a barrier when a band is described as "influenced by New Order". I would have thought that would have been a damn good reason to give them a listen?

Anyway, for what it's worth, I love The Killers, I double love Interpol. Listened to The Bravery album a couple of times but it didn't do much for me.

Currently listening to a lot of Editors, the latest in the "inspired by Joy Division" production line.

I also quite like The Killers and Interpol and The Strokes and I don't mind The Bravery, having said all that I havnae bought any of their albums. Not when Radio 1 have them on all day long:lol:

part of my distaste comes from HOW these bands managed to get in heavy rotation at Radio 1 and every Clear Channel station in the USA. it's not based on merit, just in case you wondered. if Factory had paid people to play New Order, they'd be as big as U2 now. it's not simple "promotion" either. sending in discs and press releases does not get your airtime. i forget the figure but another similar band, Franz Ferdinand, had their rec label pay truck loads of music to get their song on MTV. this isn't fair imho and immediatley strikes those bands off my list of reputable artists. New Order was my first musical obsession and part of the reason i love music so much to this day. their integrity in the beginning of their career, combined with the Smiths' infamously poor promotion imbedded a belief that music must stand on it's own merits, not on how many plays it gets on the radio/tv. All of the band mentioned on this thread, Strokes, Interpol, Killers etc. have relied on business men peddaling their severely pillaged sound in order to sell units. it may beat a lot of other stuff on the radio but what the fuck are you doing listening to the radio in the first place? that's a corporate brain washing tool and you're falling into their dirty little mitts.

now someone get me a foot stool, this horse is up to high.

The Franz record had been out awhile before it "took off" due to the usual "business practices" of radio, and since the big time music biz has been unable to rid itself of this for a long time, I've no illusions that this will ever change, human nature being what it is.

I liken the SonyBMG case to speeding tickets: you can't catch everything and everyone, so a couple of offenders are named while it's business as usual, full-speed ahead, for everybody else.

Payola, payola, payola

the scandal was about franz ferdinand's label bribing stations to play their songs in return for free, quite expensive things. then e-mails from a boston radio DJ were leaked and...there you have it.

but i don't think saying that franz ferdinand had their label do it is accurate. the band probably had little, if any, hand in the scam. the labels put more pressure on the bands than vice versa. why do you think prince and george michael became so pissed off with their respective labels? don't blame the band here, blame the record companies.
