Blue Monday/The Beach FAC73-7: The Ultimate Question..?

What with this 'Singles' thing looming, I'm just wondering if we can possibly clear up the rumours/stories about the various 7" versions of Blue Monday 1983 once and for all:

We know there's a Factory/Nippon Columbia TD-1098 Japanese Promo, with a 4:09 edit of BM on side A, and Confusion 7" mix on the flip. Meant to be about 25 copies, most of which Hooky has in storage as they never liked the edit (Bit of the outro at the start instead of the normal longer intro, quicker fade at end basically).

There's also a Tonpress DS-25-A Polish 7" with a 5:05 version on the A-side (dunno what's on the flip). I'd guess this is the full 12" with an early fade, but I've never heard or seen this. Anyone else got this??

I have the Tonpress S-534 Polish 7" (of which there are meant to be 60), and this runs at 33rpm and has the full 12" mixes of BM and Thieves Like Us.

But, what of FAC73-7? Rumours of its existence abound, but does anyone have a copy/seen a copy/heard the edit/know anything whatsoever about it? If it exists, is there also a 7" edit of 'The Beach'?

Surely, if no one here knows anything about it, it can't have ever existed.

I notice the New Order Discography site lists a VHS promo video: UK 1983 (Factory FAC 73V) with a 4:06 Blue Monday, so does that mean the original video effectively featured a seven inch edit of the track? If so, which edit - the Japanese one? Maybe that's what'll appear on 'The Singles', to tie in with 'Item' (unless they just use the BM88' vid, of course).

Help me tie up all these loose ends!

The BM83 video does indeed use the "Japanese" edit.

I don't believe FAC73-7 exists. Over 20 years has gone by, no music mag or book has ever mentioned it, no radio station has ever played it and no-one has ever seen a picture of it.

well they seem to have buried the BM83 Video as well. i would be suprised if the BM83 video is on item

Ah the Blue Monday 7".

Every fan's favourite conspiracy. We all secretly wish that there's some sort of holy grail radio promo 7" floating around out there. But details have always been sketchy at best.

Think the best way to validate it's non-existence is to put it this way: Dave Sultan doesn't have a copy.

I don't reckon there is a 7" version of 'The Beach'. That Japanese 7" was backed with 'Confusion', and it looks like a UK 7" never existed now.

Any chance of an mp3 of the Jap edit for me too? :) The mp3 copy I have is dreadful.

Just browsing the Video archive of this site at http://www.neworderonline.com/Multimedia/MediaList.aspx?MediaTypeID=2 and the 83 Video there isn't the Jap edit - just a cropped version of the 12", coming in with the four hi-hat hits. A 7" mix of sorts, I suppose.

There is a typo in the New Order Discography - it is the PL promo that is released in 60 copies, not the regular S-534 7".

The Discography has this statement regarding the UK 7":

True but do any of them actually claim to have a copy?

Can anyone actually give us the name of ANYONE who has ever owned - or even laid eyes on - a copy? Not just on NOOL but anywhere in the world?

Think people have been holding onto the possibility of a Confusion-like, radio-only 7" but pressed in even smaller quantities. But we need evidence.

as far as im aware the polish 7" blue monday edit does exist but in what quantites i do not know. as for the edit itself its supposed to be the version they played live on top of the pops circa 83. whereas the song plays out with a few synth skips and drum splashes(if you know what i mean). so watch that performance if you want to know how it sounded live at least.

I have one of the few copies of the Japanese 7" Blue Monday b/w Confusion that is not in Hooky's wardrobe. I bought it at Camden market in London in 1993 for 10 pounds. It is now in my record collection back in NZ. I knew it was rare, but no idea at the time it was extremely rare. I only found that out a year or two back when this vinyl was mentioned on a thread.

Someone offered me around US$750 for it. I turned down the offer being a longtime NO freak (since 1983 I think) .:D

You only paid 10 pounds for it? You got really lucky! Yeah, it I were you, I wouldn't sell it either, no matter what the cost.
