Sorry to all those that discussed/read this when it came about in 2002...
I still love the NO Back to Mine. Masses. There are some cracking tracks on there from the likes of Captain Beefheart, Roxy Music, Cat Stevens, Doves. This was music I hadn't ventured into so bought an album of each. Disappointment hit me - variable genius or what!?
Can anyone recommend some decent stuff that I might try that's kind of along these lines?
Because of this I got into The Doves... although I only really like about half of what they do...
I also bought the Lou Reed anthology as a result (because everyone is always banging on about the influence of Velvet Underground); what a waste of money!
Already had Missy Elliot, Roxy Music and a lot of the music by the dancefloor artists.
Spot on though- Back to mine is a cracker!!!
if you bought captain beefheart you'd better own a frank zappa album or two! (not a big fan, personally, but the two always seem to go hand in hand.)
if you like cat stevens (i've been a fan since primary school), you might try joni mitchell if you don't listen to her already. blue is her most famous album, and for good reason--it's absolutely sublime.

I can't remember the Cat Stevens one, but the Roxy Music one was called 'The Early Years' (I think). Reason I got this one was because Every Dream Home a Heartache was '73.

tea for the tillerman is my favourite. teaser and the firecat is also class.
when i was a kid i taped my parents' copy of tea for the tillerman off their reel-to-reel!

Isnt there a live album as well which is very good?
Saw them june just gone at IOW festival. Amazingly, they can still cut it live.

for something challenging that is really incredible if you get get you head around it ...get Can's third album with "Mushroom" called Tago Mago, or their fourth album Ege Bamyasi... this stuff really inspired a hell of a lot of people including New Order and The Fall and a lot of heady post punk stuff, including even electronic stuff in style even thou they were not like Kraftwerk
Lou Reed's solo career may be overated and spotty, but the first three Velvet Underground albums are indispensible, and the song writing style of the self titled third album and the lost fourth album (VU has some) obviously directly inspired mr Sumner's songwriting greatly
or try The Stooges and realize that half the Joy Division songs are really just naive attempts to imitate the Stooges, more essential stuff
the early Mantronix is just f********* unbelievable, sounds so good 20 years later, incredible

captain beefheart is strange, yet great. i would go for one of his later albums (78-80) first, as they are more... easy? not as difficult anyway.
primal scream... great band. get screamadelica, vanishing point and xtrmntr. i would suggest vanishing point as the best place to start. if new order were evil...
velvet underground--get their first three albums. now. don't bother with lou reed until you know this stuff. don't buy a best of vu... it is a useless endevour and their albums are cheap anyway.
doves--get their second album... don't remember the name. there goes the fear is a wondrous single and the rest of the album is tip-top too.
roxy music--their first four or five albums and avalon are all amazing. i especially like their first. the second has some great stuff on it too. avalon will make any woman want to get in the sack. useful!
donna summer--difficult to compile, difficult to choose albums as she didn't always have quality control. she has great songs, but finding a complete selection that doesnt include crap is hard... someone needs to buy up all her stuff and make a best of that really is a best of.
can--my oh my. all of their stuff up to 1975 is worth owning. best drummer the world has ever seen. (although not my favorite). if you like can, move on to faust. faust is even better.
the others i don't know so much about. but that's my two sense.

Er, might sound daft but why not buy all the others in the Back To Mine series?! I've got the majority I think.
The Audio Bullys one is a classic, but surely more keeping in tune with lads of my age (late 30's) than early 20's, like the Bullys are (I think).
If you liked Missy Elliot's cover of 'I Can't Stand The Rain', then get 'It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back' by the great Public Enemy, as both them and Elliot are considered pioneers in hip hop.

Good album (911 is a Joke, can't argue) but lacks the tightness of ITANOMTHUS

i LOVED "big eyed beans fom venus" by captain beefheart.
so.... i did a bit of research, and it seems most beefheart fans pointed to "trout mask replica" as the MUST OWN album by beefheart.
my christ - i was tempted to take it back to the shop and ask for my money back - don't expect to find any "big eyed beans...." type tracks on there. unlistenable tripe that could only be loved by the most pretentious MOJO writing journalist. avoid at all costs.

I've got pretty much all the Back to Mine's.
On the NO Back to Mine, the sleeve notes talk about 'Rhythim is Rhythim by the Dance as being like something off PCL. Can anyone shed any light on this?!
