Are you getting the encore blues... ?

It seems BlueMonday, was,is and will be the eternal encore track for our great band , but i guess this is justified due its immense importance not only in their history but in the history of dance music as we know it.

However although its more than unlikely that any other NO track will ever eclipse this which other track can be suggest by the devotee's as being worthy of rounding off a NewOrder set with ??

I'd be inclined to go with True Faith.

Perfect Kiss always has been the perfect way to end a set, the way it slows down after its big orgasmic crescendo. Not that we will ever hear it again though :(

It's a tragedy to let this sparkling piece of music gather dust just because it requires reprogramming or reformatting. They wouldn't even have to do it themselves if they couldn't be arsed.

I've always wondered PK has been left untouched all these years when most of the other acclaimed NO 'classics': Temptation, BLT, TF, Confusion, BM, 1963, WIM, etc have been reworked, updated, cleaned up, remixed and remastered. Why have they left PK on the shelf.. Too difficult?

I'd like to hear someone clean up some of the dated sounds on the original and pump out a fresh version. As much as I still love the original.

they certainly had a good ole stab at remixing it for LowLife ;) it would be nice to hear it updated as its a shame its been left on the shelf for all these years, but perhaps they want to keep it pure and simple (the PK video suggests this)

Why not ? Because they can't be arsed. They knew how long it would take to reprogramme, and could have done it months ago knowing they were touring for the best part of a year, but no, why get off your arse and earn your money when you can churn out the same stuff every night ?

Allen had a good idea when he suggested opening with Blue Monday. That would set any crowd into a frenzy and the rest of the show would benefit from the early enthusiasm. I hate the "new" version of True Faith and i'm happy to see Touched has been dropped. Barney absolutely ruins it with constant yelping. Does he need to whoop right before the first "Touched"? Does he whoop to cue the band? Why does Hooky yell "Here we go" before the conclusion of LWTUA? I'm starting to believe their possible tour of America in April will have all the songs they played at Area:one. The only tracks not aired that they are currently playing are...Transmission, Ceremony and Love Vigilantes. Would be worth admission just to see these three, but I wish they would get it together and program in some new (old) material. Surely Primitive Notion is the best song on the new album but it will probably never be played live. It has a nice big ending like Perfect Kiss and would bring the house down (if they could pull it off).

What they need to do, as soon as they get back from Australia, is take stock of the situation regarding the live stuff. If that means consulting the hardcore likes of Jarvo and Johnny Giles, then so be it. What they are doing right now is almost defeating the object. For credibility's sake (and I mean that, though I can accept that not everyone will see it the same way), they need to freshen up the live set on the forthcoming American tour in April/May. Old songs have got to be reintroduced, and some of the material from Get Ready needs an airing as well. They have never pandered to the audience before, so why this lame turning out of Blue Monday every show ? Are they skint ? Or just so out of touch with what we actually want ? Or don't they care ?

My guess is that they are now happy playing the same set night after night. It's easy and it fascilitates their pension plan. Plus, they've already printed out 50 set-lists so it would be a waste of paper to add anything now. They need Neil Diamond or Wayne Newton to give them some advice on securing a good Casino/Hotel for their next "Reunion" Revue in Vegas.

I have defended the Order previously for their choice of set list, but it has to be said the constant repetition of the same 'hits' is starting to make them look like a novelty nostalgia act, such as Heaven 17 and ABC etc

It's not like there isn't a whole host of crackin songs that they could play instead. Replace BLT,Touched, Blue Monday if they can't be arsed, and possibly the slightly dodgy version of True Faith they're playing, with different songs and we're starting to get there.

We're not bitter, are we ? :)

I think they should do "Liar" (with three guesting female backing vocals for that extra cheesy touch) - if only just to clear the place as quickly as possible of punters so the roadies can get to work packing up for home. Now THAT would be something entirely different - and unpredictable - for once. :D

I've always thought the natural songs to bring a gig to a close are Temptation, The Perfect Kiss, Sunrise or possibly Age of Consent.

It's only post '89 that Blue Monday has crept back into the set on a regular basis. When I first started seeing the Order live in about 85/86 they NEVER played BM.

I remember them doing it at Finsbury Park in '87 and the sigh and anti-climax from the crowd was audible.

Perhaps the record company should do a competition and let the fans come up with a set list which the band could chose. You never know that kind of thing may appeal to them now they've mellowed out....though that guy from Lion Rock would have kittens trying to get his hand on 're-programming materials' for the likes of Senses and Chosen Time!

Now that is a good idea ! Various bands have done it before. Obviously it was easier for them as they were all-guitar, but the Bunnymen often went on stage without a set list in the mid 80s, and just did requests. If there was a request that they didn't feel was well-enough rehearsed, Mac would just add the vocals into one of the slow bits they put into Do It Clean, Crocodiles, Villiers Terrace or Rescue.....

All this talk of set-lists brings me to offer one question. Do the band overestimate the significance of Blue Monday to their fans ? Don't they realise that we fucking hate it by and large ? We, the paying public who turn up at these gigs hoping to hear other stuff......

I woudln't say I hate Blue Monday, but I would hope they realise that, being a 20-year old song, most people have run across that one or have heard it live and would be alright without hearing it again. Any band doing a "greatest-hits" package tour needs to spice it up with some more obscure stuff.

As for the request idea, that would actually be great (Now watch everyone request Blue Monday! :D )

Having never seen NO live i would love the chance to see them play Blue Monday, but it does not have to be the encore/finale of the show. I think a final song like Perfect Kiss or Theives would really top a show off, especially due to the really cool synth breaks and finishes to the songs. But to be truthful, i would take them playing anything at the end of the show as it is a bit hard to get tired of anything you have not seen before!

Being a relative nipper i have only seen them play twice once at reading in 92 and in october last year at the barrowlands and we didn't get any bloomin effort at an encore because barney chucked his toys out of his pram! Having said that i was secretely quite pleased as we had the last song -transmission dedicated to my late fiance!

having yet to see 'em live like a few on this thread, anything is going to be fine. but i'm also hoping that they are in the neighborhood on the east coast for a few days, and hope to see them in multiple locations, but my nerve is getting dimmed by the set lists being rehashed.

anyway...how about Dreams Never End...

Lonesome Tonight used to be the slowie in 5th track spot though. Seen it used as an encore twice I think.

Perfect kiss or Temptation would each make a perfect closer - my fave to end the show would be either In a lonely place or Decades though...

I think that perhaps British fans have a different relationship with Blue Monday than people from other parts of the world.

For example, on this tour in the UK BM never got a raptuous response anywhere unlike Temptation and Ceremony. It probably got the best response in Glasgow.

However in Paris BM seemed to go down a belter and was perhaps the best received song overall.

I have a love/hate relationship with BM - I never want to see it live because its such an anti-climax because of the audience response in the UK but it is a ground breaking tune none the less and I can't help feeling it would be a massive favourite with the 'hard core' if it hadn't been such a massive hit.

Give me EGG, Procession, DNE or AOC anyday in concert.
