With the new picture manager facility available I thought I would share some photos I took back in 1987 at the Galaxy Club gig in Auckland, N.Z. when I smuggled my camera in to the gig. It was my second New Order outing and a good gig because:
- I was close enough to Barney to grab his foot in front of me and not let go (sanity prevailed)
- I got loads of good pictures and a bootleg
- I scored Barneys set list and guitar pick at the end of the gig
- Heard the live debut of Touched By The Hand of God
- Some punter upstairs scored one of Steve’s drumsticks during Sister Ray. If you have the bootleg, listen carefully near the end and you hear him miss a beat. He lost grip of a drumstick as it flew up to the balcony section and quickly resumed with another. Amazes me how quickly he recovered.
I’ve got a whole roll, but can only upload up to 5 for now so have picked a few. I was about 17 at the time and smack in front of me were Gillian & Barney. I was in heaven.
Barney got annoyed with my camera flashing at him every two seconds and pulled this face with his tongue out and started acting like a maniacal monkey. Actually, thinking about it now, it could have been the first signs of his freaky dancing! Look carefully at his tongue – it has a very distinctive yellow colour to it (not so easy to see on this lower res picture). I’m guessing Pernod – any other suggestions?
Bit sunburnt in the NZ summer sun.
Hard to see in this picture but you can clearly see in the original photo Rob Gretton on the extreme right of this picture.
Gillian smiling at a gig! I kept yelling to her to look up at me while taking loads of photos. I managed to annoy at least two New Order members that night with my camera.
