New Order - Singles Tracklist

well...I got hold of a promo CD-R of this and there's good news and bad news.

It does have the proper 7" versions of Ceremony (1st recording) and Temptation, plus the 3'55 edit of Thieves Like Us. It's what you all want it to be. The weird thing is that Working Overtime is the last track on the second disc and NOT Turn! Perhaps this is the last single from the album?

Which mixes of blue monday are on it? Original 12" or 7"?

Is Run2 the Technique verson or the proper single release and is Confusion the original or the '87 version?

Well, at first sight, it is obvious that 'Blue Monday' is somewhat the original 12" (and not the infamous edit !) and so it goes for 'Perfect Kiss' (seems album version by the length and so for 'Run', 'True Faith' : 12"), but, hey, we finaly get an official CD release for originals such as 'Ceremony' and 'Temptation' at very long last.

confusion is the original run 2 sounds a lot like the technique version to me, to be honest I'm not sure what the difference was between the single and the album one, never did get one of those promo 7"s of it.

That's what I thought. Without digging the 7" out I think it runs in about 3:30 ish.

Referring to Blue Monday the original, are the first couple of beats missing as is often the case, Retro aside.

In a way, it is classic ie. contrary New Order and why should we expect any more or less from them. But to replace one of the latest album's better tracks with (IMHO) its weakest is a piss-take of the highest Order.

What makes it especially galling to me is that the supposed novelty of WORKING OVERTIME (that's all I could get out of it, a fun Stooges romp etc.) has definitely worn off to the point where I switch off at the end of TURN before an otherwise fine album's close is marred. It's a B-side at best and now look where it seems to be going - right on to a bloody singles collection of course.

Which I certainly won't be buying on release.

Pure speculation, but perhaps Turn was too long to fit. WO is much shorter.

That seems to be the tracklisting... A bit sad really that they used so many album versions... and Spooky is indeed the radio edit, not the minimix.

If they have the correct quality for a handful of previously-on-vinyl tracks, then they could for all.

What's going on with 1963? A few seconds difference wouldn't be odd, but getting to 4:19 from 4:04 (for the Arthur Baker radio edit) seems a bit of a stretch. Is this a different edit of the Baker mix?

I'm rather ticked off that they couldn't get Run 2 right, but yeah, it is wroth it just for Ceremony and Temptation. Having the 7" mixes of EGG, Confusion, Thieves, State, and Subculture on CD is good too, I guess.

Thought this was meant to contain the single versions - so why the album mixes of 'BLT', 'Run' and 'True Faith'? More to the point, which mix of '1963' is 4:19??? Too long for Arthur Baker's Radio Mix, too short for the original.

As for Turn/WO... Very odd. I like WO as a fun, closing track, but not too sure of it's status as a single? Should've stuck with 'Guilt' or 'Turn'...

Weird, as always. Roll on the bloody box set in 2015...

Fabulous. Close a 31 tracks double CD singles anthology of 25 years of career with SHITTING OVERTIME! S-H-A-M-E We thought they heard our opinions when we saw Turn, but maybe after all they really couldn't care less: they're fucking up the WFTSC single, the Singles collection, and even Item won't include the WFTSC video. STILL, all the three releases are worth getting for some rare single edits and some new and rare videos...

I still hope the promo sleeve is a fake, anyone could print such a sleeve with their computer... ;) But I'm afraid it's true...

Add the times up. Each disc will be about an hour. Plenty of time to spare. They wouldn't decide a single release based on its running time. Come back 'Guilt', all is forgiven...

Actually, that's a bit unfiar, as I do like 'WO', just as I like 'Rock The Shack'. Good to hear New Order rocking out now and again. Not an ideal single, that's all.

All I wanted, well one of the things I really wanted, was a remastered version of the original 1963 from substance. the hague '95 mix from the best of or whatever screwed up the lyrics and cut out part, and the arthur baker mix is fine, but kind of boring to me, i was really disappointed they didn't include the original in retro, and now again in the single comp, why have it right next to the substance version of true faith but include a mix from 8 years later of 1963 instead of the original version? i guess there's no point pondering these things... I guess i also need to accept Run2 is never going to be released again, but please stop listing it on the tracks for these compilations and driving everyone mad....!

Let's see, we had a "best of" and now a "singles". I would not be surprised to see a "greatest hits" reserved for their next compilation (probably after next year's new album).

Confusion is definitely NOT the Substance 1987 version. It's an original recording that runs about 4'50, perhaps it's an unedited take? There's some stuff near the end I'm not that familiar with, although I never liked the track enough to really listen to it much so I'm not the best judge.

As for 1963 it actually runs about 4'12

I mean, really, least they could do if they're proposing to realease a compilation with all the original radio versions, is actually give us a compilation that features all the original radio versions!

If it really isn't Run 2 on this collection, I'll put my high-quality Technics 1210 digital vinyl grabs of the 12" online and openly share the links with you all. London/Warner can take me to court if they want - but where else are we supposed to get the bloody things on CD! Same goes for 'True Faith' 7" (which I have a CD version of in the first place) and the two alternate seven inch mixes of 'Perfect Kiss'. If they won't remaster and re-release them, what else do they expect us to do???

Because we don't have them all on CD... Ceremony 7" alone is worth the price of it.

But I admit that people having all singles already shouldn't bother that much.

We just had to guess if Warners can barely be arsed to release the title track, they won't release a fourth single... so no Turn, alright, but what really matters is no Working Overtime! Good, let the title track finish the compilation and be the last single from the album, it's OK. Let's look forward.

Why? What's so bad about Turn?

No no... I love Turn, I've always said it should have been released as a single, especially in America, it would have been a hit. But I usually think fourth singles are a bit unnecessary. While two are not enough, four could be too much. You can't please everyone... Guilt would have also been a great single, for the dancefloors. If they still released any of them as a single I'd be happy. But if they don't, it's alright, they've made their three singles, though the release of the third is a bit poor, being only a 2 track CD (oh yeah, and the 7" for avid collectors). If they released the promo Tony says it was made that would have been good. Even better if it featured exciting remixes from the likes of Colder or Planet Funk. The huge relief is because at this point the danger was to see Working Overtime being the fourth single, and the last song of the compilation. My problem is with that song. I don't really hate it, I can like it as I liked Rock The Shack. But I think both are just worth of being B sides. At least Rock The Shack is only an album filler. But Working Overtime is the last song of the album, a place too important for a song like that, and worse it seemed it would have been the last song of a 25 years double anthology, and a single even! I'm glad this nightmare won't happen.

Regarding Working Overtime, I concur with you, Mick. Releasing the song as a single and thus including it in the complation would be a disaster

If it came down to it Turn is a much better song over Working "my fukkin last nerve" Overtime.

so eil and hmv don't mention 'Working Overtime', it's on the actual promo CD-Rs though and therefore is probably on the final release whether you like it or not.

What a mess indeed. This may be another thread starting here, but Factory, for all their faults, used to have a reasonably clear vision as to what direction they wanted New Order to head in. Well, actually, they probably botched many projects, but my point is, is that apart from the financial side of it, London are just as useless (if not more so) in handling the New Order brand, and as a major label, this is unforgiveable.

Look at the Pet Shop Boys - every album remastered, with a disc for remixes and rarities, and a comprehensive booklet. Also a double album of B-sides and rarities. The Cure - remasters, box sets etc. Is it so hard??

Retro, International, Singles, WFTSC, Item - all missed opportunities and strange decisions! If there is one band in the world suited to satisfying their fans with rarities and oddities, it's New Order, but they always drop a bollock. Oh, the irony. If NOOL members hadn't protested so much, then Retro's bonus disc wouldn't have materialised.

Hello again, Just got a dbl.Promo. CD-R. of 'Singles' off Vinyl Exchange last Monday (26 Sep.2005) and it's got 'Turn' as last track on CD2. As discussed previously by cognoscenti on this site, I can confirm that it's genuinely all original 7" versions, EXCEPT for 'Perfect Kiss' which is the album version and same goes for 'Run' and not 'Run2', and the 12" full length for both 'Blue Monday' (original) and 'True Faith', so, all in all not too bad inni't.
