I answer your question: it's cheaper and more convenient to buy it online nowadays. In my city, if you buy anything in a store you have to add 8.025 % tax.

there are no record stores or chains here in Miami that step outside of rap and latin and top40....except maybe that Virgin store down in Coral Gables (far). There may be dj-type stores in southbeach, but thier inventory would be limited, if they exist.

I've just assumed that most of the free world is buying music online these days.

Not really... it's still cheaper to grab it at the local HMV... you don't pay the damned shipping.

I order online when I know it's not going to be available at the local shop...

I recently succumbed to Amazon's offer of a flat annual rate for two-day shipping on all purchases.

If you buy enough, it makes sense.

I hate buying stuff online.

I will drive 165 miles to the Virgin Megastore in Orlando to get something. Sometimes, they don't even have stuff.

I would order online, like those WFTSC 7"s, but I'm not paying the exorbitant exchange rate plus getting screwed on the shipping.

On top of that, no one on this site even offered a good reliable place to get those 7" singles for a good price.

i usually buy off amazon, although best buy is the cheapest store within driving distance. i never bother with wal-mart. they will only sell edited versions of albums--i think that's tragic.

For the record, i think i have bought two discs online.

I buy most things online, as the nearest (decent) record shop is in London (20 mile train journey)...

And considering I work from home most days, I'm always in when the postman knocks on the door! :D

C'mon I gave a try to every local store around here (BestBuy, Circuit City, Hastings, Goody's, Wal-marts) and the prices were HIGHER than at Amazon.com. So why should I pay more like an idiot?

It's a bit worse for those of us who don't have a decent music store in their town; I'd have to drive at least an hour (and not in stop and go traffic either) one way to get to the shops that would be most likely to stock said product, which would be okay on a weekend, but not the best solution during the working week.

the record store is pretty much dead, except for a few campus stores. Best Buy is the only chain store in which you have a chance to find releases with much diversity, and even then they are not great. online you can get what you want in a week for certain, and if you shop wisely it is cheaper. CDuniverse.com always has new releases on sale without tax and they are dependable

Wal-Mart is creepy... it's a challenge for the staff to even alphabatize their slim selection of CDs and DVDs. like Lover of 1987 said, it always seems like that at whatever Wal-mart you go to there is this constant level of the lowest common denominator of american society just hanging around, creepy

well-ok I DO work at a record store! (Tower Records btw) WE just had a huge re-training on customer service. But alas with the net being so so convenient-I am in a losing situation I think....free will is quite the beast

To the yankeedoodledandy guys with crap record stores (shops) in their towns etc,i do sympathise. My town finally got an hmv after 15 years,and its no bigger than a corner shop!

I'm American and I would never ever ever set foot in a Wal-Mart. They should all be burned to the ground with the white trash sister-fucking rednecks inside.

Fortunately, we in New England have a chain called Newbury Comics which is excellent when it comes to diverse music and imports. I'm not ordering Singles online because I know Newbury Comics will have a couple of copies about a week after release.

because wallmart sucks!!! the only record store i step foot in is Ameoba Music. It's like being in a supermarket that has an upper and lower level. There's nothing you won't find there. They have them in Berkley, San Fran, and L.A.

Wal-Mart, in my rather outdated experience, never stocks import CDs and in any event has only the most limited, popular selectoin of music possible. Wal-Mart is probably carrying the current album and might have a copy of Best Of, but that's about it.

Fewer and fewer music shops of any kind, even in major metropolitan areas, carry domestic CD singles any more. I hit one independent shop and three of the chians nearest to me looking for the Krafty and Jetstream singles a week or two after each came out and couldn't find either. No point in going to a shop that doesn't sell what you're after, eh?

On top of all that, buying on-line is actually cheaper anyway, even considering shipping, since the on-line retailers often deal in such great bulk (and anyway have so much competition) that they discount steeply. Even better, you can always find a used copy on-line for significant savings. And there's no sales tax, either. Buying on-line makes a lot more sense economically and for convenience. Brick-and-mortar shops are fine for impulse buys, but unless you're into whatever happens to be in the top-40 at the moment or you have some damn good independent shops in your area, you're better off on-line.

We have a few good shops here in Atlanta, but they are so far away! One shop I really like to go to and have for many years just moved too far away to make a trip just to explore the bins like I used to. We have a Tower and I go there at least once a month...Our HMV closed it's doors around a year ago. Wal-Marts suck. We do have a decent sorting of BestBuys around, and Targets aren't half bad.

But for imports that only leaves Tower, my old favorite shop that is now about 50 miles away from me, and a few others that are to far away to just make a trip to. Especially now that gas prices are what they are.

I do enjoy going into a store, but I may have to order singles online.
