Most of Republic me thinks apart from Regret but I can't tell for sure as I haven't listened to it in ages.
Hooky's bass is present on most songs on Republic, it's just very low in the mix. Listening to it with headphones is quite a revelation.
World is the obvious one, and RIAD I think - although Hooky did 'invent' basslines for these on the live versions I think. Probably a fair bit of Republic lacks bass guitar, but it is there (sometimes very briefly/quietly) on more songs than I seemed to remember.

Considering the number of us who think that Hooky's bass is intrinsic to a 'good' New Order sound, it's amazing at how low in the mix it appears on most of 'Republic' and even parts of 'Technique'. Then again, they were arguing alot around that time and as Barney seems to have the last say on studio stuff it may have been out of spite...
Hooky's bass is there on Republic. You actually find it's so nicely blended in with the songs it doesn't sound a seperate entity like on most songs. Also low in the mix of course.

Far too many don't have enough of hooky, but most do have some all be it very low in the mix hooky, i have no problem with hooky sounding like a seperate entity on a tune, he is a seperate entity, a one off, and should be on every track hi in the mix, playing normal bass and lead bass.

Yeah the whole seperate entity thing is great. Just in Republic it's more altogether with the music and very low if you know what I mean.

It sounds more like a guitar to me. You could never get that sound from a bass.
There's no Hooky bass on Rock The Shack or Working Overtime is there? I assume we're talking the melodic high up twanging? Yup, none of that on those two tracks, well maybe a bit towards the end of Working Overtime but quite low and understated.
I can't abide Rock The Shock but Working Overtime is still pretty listenable..

Both Rock The Shack and Working Overtime are shoddy. Can't stand either. Barneys whinny voice just doesnt suit rockier tracks. I use to not mind Rock The Shack, but since everyone on here's dissed it, Ive gone off it.
Hooky still plays bass on these 2 lame rock numbers. Even if its not at the high end of the fret board, its still playing bass.
Hooky's bass can sound like a guitar. Some good examples are the coda of 'Dreams Never End', 'Age of Consent', 'Chosen Time', among many others. When he's playing very high up on the fret, with a six-string, with chorus on, you'd think Hooky was an ace lead guitar player. So yes, he's on 'Elegia'.
Republic is full of bass, just less prominent.
A song called Best & Marsh if I remember anything has no real bass.

certainly there is classic Hooky bass playing in Crystal
i don't know but a lot of the early to mid 80s stuff has sequenced basslines... but New order tended to mix things up a bit, even in the course of a song. I suppose somebody who is familar with how they recorded in the 80s probably could figure out which songs do not have actual Hooky bass playing in them and which don't, if they had the time... kinda a moot point IMO

Live, Hooky did back up vocals on this track. Barney's basswork consists of a bit of slapping, while Hooky has a solo near the end.

In fear of over playing the signature of Hooky's bass, it seems that it is rationed appropriately - so as not to totally create overexposure to his sound. If overselling occurred I'm sure boredom would have halted sales and NO's status - I think their musicianship prevents that.

Can someone please explain to me what part is Hookys on Elegia? I keep reading people say he's on it but I have my doubts. On the live glastonbury version you can hear him play the guitar riff on his bass. But it sounds nothing like the sweet guitar playing on the record.

The high end of Hooky's six string bass is the only guitar in Elegia save for Barney's which enters near the end.
