Some questions for the experts

I'm a huge NO fan, but must admit I'm no expert - so can any of you guys help me out with these questions?

1. Is there another version of "Let's Go" available that is different to the versions on the US "Best Of" and the LTD cd of 1963?

2. How many versions of "Ceremony" have NO released commercially? (not including the Joy Division version(s))

3. "Mesh" has often been mis-labeled as "Cries & Whispers" (and vice-versa). I love the one that has the lyrics What do they want with me? What do they want with me? I don't know, etc... - but is this "Mesh" or "Cries & Whispers"???!

If anyone can help out I'd appreciate it.

1. The original instrumental version is on the "Salvation" soundtrack. There is a demo version, not officially released but widely available as an mp3. CLICK TO LISTEN

2. Two, the original version and a re-recorded one when Gillian Gilbert joined.

3. Mesh starts with the line "Filled with desire, the empty scene..."

There are two other versions of Let's Go. There is the one on the Salvation sountrack (no words) and an edited version of that same track on the RETRO bonus disc.

Well, there are a couple of different versions of Let's Go available (aside from the remake on "Best Of"/"1963").

Most are detailed here, but I shall summarise below:

1. Original instrumental available on the Salvation soundtrack.

2. Slightly edited version of the instrumental available on Retro CD 5.

3. Live version with completely different vocals to that of the re-recorded version - also available as a demo version as linked above.

12" Version with Gillian Gilbert (4:23) [also on Substance]
7" Version (4:34) [also on 'Singles'] Studio 54, Barcelona on 7 July 1984 (4:51) [on Retro]

There are, of course, Joy Division versions on "Still" (live version) and a demo version on the "Heart And Soul" boxset.

"What do they want with me?" is actually Mesh

From the New Order discography:

'Q: This is a mesh! Mesh is not the same song as the one on my 1981-1982 EP. What's going on? A: The 1981-1982 EP has the correct title. "Mesh" and "Cries and Whispers" have often been mixed up, starting with the Everything's Gone Green single. Stephen Morris said this for the release of Retro: "Cries and Whispers is a great revelation because everyone thinks it's called Mesh. But it isn't. It was mislabelled in 1987 and nobody ever noticed."'

I feel a bit of a fool though, for not realising I could have found out all the answers myself if I'd spent a bit more time browsing this very site... at least I now know that Mesh is the song I fucking love! (and that I won't have to spend more time trying to find a better vocal version of Let's Go than I already have, cos there isn't one!)

On the singles collection, "Run" is credited as "Run 2" - but I hear this isn't "Run 2" at all....- has Run 2 ever been released on CD???

Nope, not as yet - best way is to extract the DVD Audio from 'Collection' - see previous thread, although this is just the 7" edit and not the full-length 12" Scott Litt mix.

Surely the question to ask is: are you only an expert if you get shivers down your spine when you hear the original recording of "Ceremony"??

Interesting to note that on 'A Collection' 'Run 2' is incorrectly called 'Run', and on 'Singles', 'Run' is incorrectly called 'Run 2'!

In addition to everything that's already been said, the edits of Let's Go on the U.S. Best Of and on the 1963 CD single / Retro are actually different. The U.S. one, iirc, is longer, a little over four minutes, with a cold ending. The Retro / 1963 one fades out, although it doesn't sound like it's just a fade -- there's some bass noodling during the fade that doesn't sound to me like what's on the cold-ending version.

It's not a live version Nick - they never did it live with vocals. It's a rehearsal studio one-take.

I really wish New Order had recorded this song properly. It seems to me to be such a waste of a potential classic. I love some of the lyrics on the rehearsal take (just a shame its not professionally recorded or that I can make out all the lyrics).

i think lets go should have just been left Without Lyrics, both version with the lyrics sound really corny, at least we have some great live versions of it. Skullcrusher with lyrics didnt work to well either

Oh I don't know about that suggestion for Skullcrusher Frank. You don't get many songs with "I have never met a c**t like you" in the verse! One of his better lyrical efforts!

i think lets go on best of is quite nice. one of my favorites. i always put it on best ofs for people who don't know anything... but this is the first time i'd ever heard the demo. i listened to it 3 times in a row. fucking great. neglected classic all around.

they did record Let's Go 'properly', it's part of the Low Life sessions in it's original form. It just remains unreleased.
