Regret from Reading '98

Has anyone noticed how the cool pre-chorus C chord riff is pre-recorded and Barney just strums along pretending to play it-on DVD316? Its even more evident when watching the large screen. Looks shoddy to me. I guess the concensus is that nobody cared/cares?:\ohwell:

Thats the opening guitar riff you're speaking of, right? I remember watching that DVD for the first time and during Regret I was thinking that it looks pre-recorded by the way Barney was playing. If I'm not confusing this one with the other DVD-511, Reget was a pretty awful performance on Barney's part.

I mentioned this a ways back. It's too bad, but yeah, the more intricate picking is pre-recorded so Barney can sing his heart out (or fall short). I don't think it was always like this. Barney it seems is too self-conscious to either play his guitar or remember the words. He only seems to play with passion on 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', 'Transmission', and 'Temptation'. If they brought back Brotherhood material, maybe he'd try harder.

Eh, thats too bad about Barneys performance on Regret. It seems that maybe he can't play guitar and sing at the same time? :D I thought the whole band performed very well on Atmosphere. I swear I thought Barney and Hooky were going to shed tears during that one. Such solmn looks. Almost made me tear up.

I agree. Regret from DVD511 was one of the worse performed songs. Sounded heavy and messy. I was referring to the opening guitar riff that is then repeated before each chorus.

I didn't think it was so bad. It lacked some synth work. I think the pre-recorded bit for the Reading performance might actually be a sequencer made to sound like a guitar, as opposed to a straight up backing track. I would hope that was the case.

On both versions, it sounds like someone's doing backing vocals. Can anyone clear up what's going on?

I think New Order use tapes quite alot. Some with added vocals and some with instrumentation. When I saw Electronic back in 1991 the ticket stated that no tapes were used. Whether this is a reference to what goes on when NO play I dont know. Also, I seem to remember the Electronic gig was spot on musically. This was quite surprising as there were about 4 keyboard players. How come they learnt the songs so well?

I remeber reading a Q interview with Marr and Barney, and Marr said he was on acid at the Dodgers gig.

Maybe it did him the world of good.
