Was there ever an instrumental version of State OTN.....

....that was never released...?

I'm curious to find this out as it seems everyone is unanimous in slagging this song - me included - but mainly cos it has some truly wretched lyrics. On the "Every Second Counts" thread some folks mentioned this track and "Shame of the Nation" ( the even worse b-side), but seeing as other NO singles had "dub" mixes on the flip (Shellcock, Bizarre Dub Triangle, True Dub, Dubvulture, The Perfect Dub aka The Kiss Of Death) how come NO never brought out a dub version of SOTN - it would have worked better as an instrumental as I think it's rather aggressive?

I actually like this song,reminds me of the first time i tried any narcotic substance ,seem to be drawn to hooky's bass more than ever in this one.

I don't understand people who don't like this song.What's wrong with it?

I don't really care what other people say, but "State of the Nation" and "Shame of the Nation" are some my favorite New Order songs. I'm kind of a wierdo, though, so I tend to like different stuff than some others.

There wasn't, as far as I know, an instrumental version of State Of The Nation - just Shame Of The Nation.

My favourite mixes are the Razormaid/Record Mirror mixes, which is basically the album version (and thus excludes those rather annoying female vocals)! :)

all the offical versions (its actually a single that is put on Brotherhood CD as an extra) have the awful inappropiate female vocals...

and that is one reason this is not one of my favorite songs, the horribly out of place over the top female vocals

another reason is that Bernard was trying to over-reach and do too much, it's an ineffective pisstake at a political song (I doubt that it inspired very many people at all IMO), plus it's an attempt at a pop song at the same time while trying to maintain self importance, it's kinda a dance song but not just a dance song its more than that, its rock too, it's even kind of a half-arsed attempt at white washed soul (not a New Order strength, that for sure)... New Order and Bernard are trying to do too much here, and end up with kinda a mess that is a below average effort for New Order

has that cool bass groove toward the end, which they recycled for Mr disco... should have built the song around that

I'm another one that likes State of The Nation. Same goes with Shell Shock, They're both great. I play them both a lot.

According to Nic's discog, there's an "Instrumental Edit" of "State Of The Nation", although I'm not sure what it's referring to?

Those Subculture remixes suck big time. Hate them with a vengance. Was playing Singles at work and when I got to SC I was so fucking embarrassed!

That's someone else's cover version so obviously it doesn't count. According to the discography mentioned above there is an instrumental edit of this song that NO did themselves...(???)

I have an .mp3 called "State of the Nation (Instrumental edit)" which runs for 4.19, but it sounds very much like a dodgy home pc edit rather than an official release - I very much doubt that the copy I have of SOTN instrumental edit is official; someone has just (badly) pieced together the instrumental parts of the song with scant regard for things like tempo and flow. CTB

As regards the clumsy editing and tempo/flow/split-second beat thingy, I suppose that isn't much of a surprise especially when you consider that some of the officially New Order-released "edits" on 7" were also just as bad - Shellshock, The Perfect Kiss, Thieves Like Us to name but a few.

ESPECIALLY the dreadful "CLUNK" you hear on the Shellshock edit just after they start singing "Hold On....!" And the infamous "Wwww....." heard on the album/ 7" version of TPK

totally. more clumsy than Dr Shipman and quickest editing technique Ive ever heard. Must have taken 10 minutes to cut and edit it.
