MANCHESTER MUSIC LEGENDS UNITE TO BEAT CANCER

The biggest ever charity fundraising gig to be staged in Manchester is being launched with some of Manchester’s very own legends set to be on stage together for the first time ever.

Andy Rourke (The Smiths), The Charlatans, Badly Drawn Boy, Mani (Stone Roses and Primal Scream) and Peter Hook have already offered their support to the event and the line-up is being added to every day with some big names from Manchester’s past and present. It could lead to some one-off, amazing collaborations on stage and is making people predict that this will be a once-in-a-lifetime event.

The ‘Manchester versus…’ gig at the MEN Arena on January 28th 2006 was the idea of ex-Smith, Andy Rourke, following news that his manager’s sister and father had been diagnosed with cancer. Andy and friends decided to group together to raise £1million for alternatives to chemotherapy at Manchester’s Christie Hospital, Europe’s largest cancer treatment and research centre.

Picking up the phone to friends, Andy quickly found that most people’s lives had been touched by cancer in some way and everyone wanted to help. And more famous faces and bands are set to confirm over the coming weeks.

Speaking about the gig, Andy said: “It will bring together people and bands that have made Manchester famous. It will be huge and the idea is that this will be the start of an annual event to raise money for charity whether it is helping cancer or arthritis. It will be bigger and bigger each year, the highlight of the musical calendar.”

I thought I was about to read the offensive post of the decade....along the lines of...."Barnesly or bowell surgery, it's a tight choice" or "Preston bus station Vs piles, a balanced view"

I'm still not sure if this will actually happen. OK they've announced it, but if no major artists are going to play (and hooky solo, the charlatans and Badly Drawn Boy, despite what he thinks, are not major artists) then they're going to have a bit of trouble raising the money required for the thing to be viewed as a success. the fact that nothing else has been heard on this in the best part of a month gives me serious doubts.

Gotta admit that the major lowlight of the upcoming quest to the apollo will be sitting in Preston bus staton from ten minutes. Bits of Preston, notably the road from bus station back out of town to motorway to manc, look worse than the scarey bits of Belfast. Last time, on my way to Leeds, not only was I plagued by a family of 6 kids and mum, all religious loonies singing kid-indoctrination songs, who got off in Preston, but the entire bit from Bus station back out of town I was thinking "don't break down here, don't break down here". And Anyone I know from preston hates it more :)

fund raising for cancer research has to be one of the most worthwhile causes going. I'm speaking as a former carer.

Liam, you're such an 'up' person. But you're right, without serious pushing, these things tend to go a tits up. But I hope it goes according to plan, and don't forget they've got a few months to work on it yet.
