I realize this might be an old topic (my first post!), but why are we referring to WFTSC as a 7"-only release? All the 7" versions are available as digital downloads, and there's a CD-single with the long versions of two of the mixes.
Welcome to the site!
Thanks!

Regarding WFTSC: it's down to the rules for a single to be UK chart eligible, only three formats allowed.
Right, but it's not like the other formats don't exist, or are promo-only. Is the rule that we only go by the UK chart-eligible releases in referring to how the single got released? Seems like it leaves out some useful information to me. But "when in Rome..." I guess.

In my opinion regarding the digital downloads: the quality/bitrate is rubbish, the ability to copy the music (e.g. for MP3 player use) is protected against, and finally (and probably most importantly) you're screwed unless you own an iPod or have iTunes installed.
I bought 192kbps WMAs, so no need for iTunes. (US folks can't buy from the UK iTunes shop, but we can buy from 7digital.) Burned it to CDR, and now it's unprotected and I can do what I want with it. Qualitywise, not terrible. For those of us who can't afford $1000+ turntables (mainly because we're chasing down ridiculous releases like this one), you could argue that it sounds nearly as good as vinyl anyways.
Like you, I'd much rather have a CD. But the writing is on the wall: The days of people like us are numbered. The record companies hate CDs now, so they want all music to either be "copy-controlled" digital downloads, or in an analog format that is hard to copy and very unportable.

Overall, a release handled extremely badly even with the very nice, but useless slipcase idea. I don't think Warners were/are arsed with New Order singles anymore; first WFTSC on 7" only and now Guilt as a US digital-only release.
Clearly, New Order are not their top priority. Maybe, after 25 years, it's time for the band to start their own label?
