How do all!

I was just wondering why there wasn't anything played off the album Technique the other night @ the Apollo? Now this is my favorite New Order album, & was shocked not to hear anything from it. Why is this does anyone know, do the band not rate it? the fans not rate it? Anyone know? Forgive me if this information is a well know New Order fact but im new on here & only know i like what ive listened to & Technique in my eyes is the mutts nuts!

Breakdown:

Movement => 0 PC&L => 1 Low-Life => 1 Brotherhood => 1 Technique => 0 Republic => 1 Get Ready => 1 Waiting For The Sirens' Call => 3 Joy Division => 6 Others => 4

Let's face it here... 0 from Technique and only 3 from their latest album, this isn't enough.

And 6 Joy Division tracks? Considering most JD fans don't care much for Bernard singing them, I hope they enjoy them, but with all the prizes they get due to JD these days, it might be a reason.

Switch 2 JD songs for Dreams Never End and, let's say Vanishing Point, and I'm quite sure people would be to heaven...

Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer them to add 2 songs rather than replacing them ;)

I get the feeling that they are reluctant to bring back synth-oriented songs (outside of the ones they HAVE to play, like BLT and True Faith), perhaps because of Phil's apparent preference for the guitar (correct me if I'm wrong). Perhaps the lack of someone like Gillian has made them feel a bit reluctant to play synth-heavy tracks like Vanishing Point and Round & Round. Either that or they're too damn lazy to just program and/or tape the whole thing.

Note: The latter is probably true.

I heavily suspect that it is entirely down to the way that they no longer rely on sequencers as much as they used to, that a lot of the synth parts are now triggered from hard disk. Every time they upgrade their set-up they would need to reprogram everything!

and no doubt when they go to set it up for a gig they will get the response of "COMPUTER SAYS NO!"

Thanks for that guys just thought it was me who's an awkard bar-steward! Sorry to say but im not a big JD fan, replace them with vanishing point & round & round, & roberts your dads brother :thumb:

It's often been claimed it would be hard for them re-program everything now, but with todays technology I doubt if it would be a serious issue. No, I think its Phil's influence that's doing the damage here.

Run, Fine Time and Guilty Partner were all played in 98, weren't they? Two of them are guitar-based as well.

Surely Dream Attack would sit nicely in a set list next to WFTSC? Classic No sequencers and guitar, no!?

I think its sad that New Order would rather play more Joy Division songs than songs off of thier new album.

I mean, I actuslly prefer NO to JD...and I think they are insulting themselves by relying on the past...they should play more songs off of WFTSC and more NO songs..and yes, I am sure that they can ahve someone program Vanishing poitn and Fine Tiem for them...

As for Phil, I hate him, because thanks to him, New Order are backing more and more synth parts onto a hrddrive so Phill can wank on the guitar.

Here is what the WFTSC call tour setlist should have looked like:

  1. Who's Joe?
  2. Morning Night and Day
  3. Crystal
  4. Waiting For the Sirens Call
  5. Krafty
  6. Regret
  7. Transmission
  8. I Told You So or Road to Ruin
  9. Thieves Like Us
  10. Vanishing Point
  11. Guilt Is a Useless Emotion
  12. Jetstream
  13. Fine Time
  14. Temptation
  15. The Perfect Kiss
  16. Bizarre Love Triangle
  17. True Faith
  18. Blue Monday

Encore

  1. Turn
  2. Everythings Gone Green
  3. Love Will Tear Us Apart.

It covers most of the albums, and is a good mixture of guitar based songs and synth dance songs, and it promotes WFTSC well. And it keeps Phil to the synthesizers for over half the set.

personally, I'd be happy if they never played a JD song again. Good as the songs are, I think they should be, as they used to be, a very occasional treat, not an 'expected'. These days I used LWTUA as a toiletbreak song, the bar and loos are always empty when they play them.

Besides, whilst NO are the best JD tribute band in the world, they aren't JD.

Well said. Totally agree, New order are turning into Marion or any other standard 4 piece outfit due to Phil's influence, whereas before they had something unique to offer. Even Joy Division sounded less overtly rocky than the nonsense we have to put up with now. Listen to Unknown Pleasures and you hear a beautifully minimalist album - a work of art. Listen to them thrash about now onstage, and its a totally different (worse) experience.

21 songs ! Impossible! I like them playing Joy Division songs. For me, it's like touching the legend  I never saw Joy Division. Who did ?

The reason Unknown Pleasures sounds so minimalistic is solely down to Martin Hannett's production. Back in the day and live, Joy Division were a very different beast and much louder/thrashier. Just listen to the Still or Les Baines albums; it's a punk band going at it basically and that's how JD were out of the studio. At the time, Hooky and Barney were reportedly unhappy with how Hannett had produced Unknown Pleasures, they felt he had taken the edge off their music.

I really like Hannett's production and see it as an integral part of Joy Division (on record) but these days the lads are only playing the songs how they originally wrote and performed them live as JD. Hannett's very obviously not going to be at the side of the stage manipulating each snare hit with reverb-delay. You don't go to gigs to see a work of art anyway, you go to hear the songs really loud and jump about :)

No point in blaming the lads or Phil cos it doesn't sound like yer CD copy  it's never going to at a gig.

I am a much bigger JD fan than NO.. well not much but still, consider myself a Joy Division fan first, and I would rather prefer hearing older NO songs than JD songs. It's too much like a tribute band or something

Any other standard 4-piece? Oh for fuck's sake.

JD live v JD studio. You know, Barney and Hooky's comments about MH's production of UP strike me as being a bit odd given that they followed it up with the glacial and spacious Closer. To be fair, maybe they mean that the production didn't suit the UP set of songs.

JD live 'then' v NO playing JD live now. If we put to one side the fact that you couldn't tear your eyes off Curtis, the sound itself is completely different. It's much more polished now, even if it's too much of a thrash for some. Cheaper instruments/amps is a factor, maybe. Also the fact that Hooky’s bass tone is completely different.

I’m delighted that they play JD songs - I never thought I’d hear Warsaw again, for example. I’m not particularly bothered about hearing Technique-era stuff, but it would be amazing to hear anything from Movement. I can’t believe it could ever happen, except maybe DNE.

Hi Ally good comments, but maybe the JD comparison was not correct. Maybe I should be comparing what we hear now to Reading 93 and 98. That's the sound of NO I personally want to hear.

i think they should change the setlist everytime more songs like "Chosen Times","Age of ConsenT" or "Angel dust".

3-4 JD Songs are enough but always others...:)

As far as I can see (based on comments made on here) technique is most noolers fave album, it seems a shame that they don't pay a couple of tracks, not just the dancey ones, all the way, loveless run and dream attack are all excellent, would fit in with todays stuff and wouldn't require tons of programming, anyway, they have people to program for them and at the end of the day, they are supposed to be there to please the fans, not themsleves, we're paying after all.

We should thrash out a set list that we all agree on (like that would ever happen) send it to them and tell them we made them rich, give us a good gig or we'll stop buying their stuff, that'll teach 'em.

I am only joking of course.

Don't think we should blame phil for the tapes.

Gillian played virtually the same parts as Phil, the only difference is she also conducted the non human musicians, whereas Phil has an off stage player ( the most disgusting trick in live music) in the form of Mr Lyons, to do the hard stuff of playing the tape.

The tapes are down to the record company wanting every gig to sound precisely like the records, because the fans of all their other bands are drooling products of siblings making love, and they think we're the same.

They could lash up TPK or BM tomorrow (in fact they HAVE a version of BM for their current rig, because the main manchines are the same as they were in 98), but they would differ, would not sound like a karaoke tape so warner's wont let em.

People are making OUR decisions for us!

for tape read LAPTOP.

personally i think too many j.d.tracks but i reckon thats the 25 years thing. and at the end of the day i guess if you want all the tracks you like then just fucking sit at home and play them instead of going gigs :banghead:

I don't blame Phil, I actually blame the current spate of british bands - Oasis, Franz, etc etc etc. Everyone, except the Killers and Bravery (American, I know) are in love with the guitar. As for set selections, I am watching 316 right now, and jesus, they could do Paradise (two guitars) also Leave Me Alone and several of the other tracks mentioned. As for Joy Division tunes, I like that this incarnation of the band is up to 8 songs they can play from that catalog, but I think it should kept in check - like 3 a night (but not the same 3 - jump around between the choices) You know make a setlist that says -

random JD song - see Barney random JD song - see Hooky random JD song - see Steve

Give them each a choice with how they are feeling that night and how they are feeling off the crowd. Some crowds (NYC, SF) would like certain tunes, whereas Machester or London might prefer others. Variety is the spice of life.

Why is it when all the other Irish fans are such lovely people, you're such a worthless fucking cunt?

Some of us are still reeling from the fact that they're still around and sounding wonderful. I'm glad they haven't learned to play. How punk rock is that?
