Disgrace. Sheer bloody-mindedness by the awarding panel. They've obviuosly noticed that Q, Uk hall of fame and the NME have all given them lifetime achievement awards, and instead of noticing this glaring error, the obnoxious berks choose to carry on ignoring them, as if to say that their opinion is superior. But, then what do I expect of a panel that sees fit to encourage talentless oafs like the Darkness?
well.. New Order is "low brow" or something in that people actually still have fun at their shows I guess.
Rightly so IMO, saw the lad last night in Newcastle and he was spot on as always (get better infact). Two hours 20 mins is not bad for £29. 2 yrs younger than NO but he still does long uk tours
You can't really argue that Paul Weller has changed the face of music though, or at least, not to the same extent. And I don't see how the fact that he does long tours helps his case- the Damned are down here in Torquay again but it don't mean I like them anymore
I saw Paul Weller at the Doncaster Dome last week, and though I wouldn't call myself the world's greatest fan you can't deny he has had an important impact on the UK music scene. He writes excellent lyrics - and needs no prompter on stage as his very tight band play through thirty years of quality material. He doesn't feel the need to trot out the same set at every gig he does unlike our favourite Mancunian lazy bastards.
Good luck to him, he deserves it.
Big fan of The Jam here, who were almost the perfect 3 minute singles band 
Not so familiar with the Style Council or Weller's solo stuff although I have Stanley Road somewhere.
The Brits is rubbish anyway, all tactically decided by music executives in order to boost sales of certain albums on their own labels. Who gives a toss what the likes of Simon Cowell and his ilk thinks? New Order have had their share of recognition awards this year and even they must be getting bored of it. Award ceremonies aren't very punk either are they? They're not doing this for gongs and pats on the back from the likes of Brandon from Killers

Nicely put in a nutshell by Alistair.Traditionally the Brit Awards are cynical shite on many levels,and notably the music they honour, in no way justifies the prestige...The Order are better off out of that cocksuckers hob-nob ar'nt they?

Paul Weller has only been vital with one band - and that was the Jam.
He has been a bandwagon-jumping charlatan of the highest order ever since. His music is now so irrelevant it's untrue: just how radical is his brand of conservative dad-rock these days?

Stick on That's Entertainment at a wedding and watch all the late 30 / early 40 something blokes jump around like they're spring lambs. Weller's been responsible for some amazing music in his time.
As a solo artist though, he's shit. But everyone of a certain age will hold the Jam sacred in their hearts. ATR told me an anecdote recently in that a huge cheer went up around their school when it was announced that Going Underground had gone straight in at no.1 in the charts. I remember something similar in my school, though not the cheer. I can't imagine any band today having that sort of effect on da yoot of today.
If Ozzy Osbourne can make it into the UK Music Hall of Fame on the back of Black Sabbath then Weller deserve the Brits accolade on the strength of the Jam alone.
Anyone who thinks the Jam's imprint on the nation's psyche is less important than New Order's is, I'm afraid, an absolute mug.
just for what he gave to music whilst he was an angry young man in the jam, paul weller deserves any every credit and accolade that he gets. In his solo career he has written some amazing songs, but I do agree , when he performs them hiself they seem a bit bland compared to the jam stuff. Just like order playing jd stuff eventually but not relying on it for their whole career, weller only started playing jam songs live after a bout 3 solo albums, so at least he hasn't rested on his laurels. Fair play to him.
with the jam, the style council (even though their music was questionable) and solo, paul weller has one of the most soulful voices i've ever heard. the voice of a motor city man coming out of a lad from woking! the jam were one of britain's finest bands ever, and paul weller's solo material is perfect lounging around music--especially the 'wild wood' album.
Give it another few years and it will be Sir Paul Weller :) . Weller is one of my all time favorites (well, the Jam anyway) i suppose its about time he was honoured,(are ocean colour scene on the nominations board?).

His solo work is nauseatingly poor thou' IMO, which is perplexing...

Erm Craig, no offence mate but I dunno why you're getting so wound up about them not getting this Brit award 
The Brits are friggin rubbish and probably the least credible music awards out there (bar MTV which never recognises NO anyway) Plus the lads have already walked away from 2005 with a literal wheelbarrow full of "legend" awards so I presume they're not that bothered about this one.
I reckon there's far too many music awards ceremonies as is it and they all look fucking nauseatingly cheddary. You open any music mag and all these gormless musos (including NO this year unfortunately) swilling champers and hugging that bloke from the Kaiser Chiefs. It's tedious and obviously not what the music's about. I'd give NO a standing ovation if they turned down one of these meaningless gongs

Not having a go; but what music awards do you think are the most credible?
I'm irked 'coz The Brits are the UK's highest profile awards ceremony and on the back of NO's recent momentum I reckon this was one of their best years for getting it... I would have rather them won this than the fledgling Hall of Fame award, although it was great to see them get that as well.
Although; there will be another window of opportunity when the next album comes out, and if, as you say, nominations are partly due to sales manipulations, then maybe this will tie in nicely?
