Gigs you've walked out of?

Left after the encore at Neil Young last summer in Finsbury Park. Subsequently discovered he did another encore after! That probably doesn't count as it was done in innocence!

Other than that, left Radiohead in Victoria Park in autumn 2000 early as my wife was in the early stages of pregnancy and felt quite ill.

Packed up a tent at Glasto to the accompaniment of the Housemartins on stage.

Left Spiritualized early at Reading 98 to see Garbage. Should have stayed where I was!

Walked out on Primal Scream many moons ago in a fit of pique, in the Ivy Ivy Ivy era. Next track was Loaded ! Apart from that, walked out on the Wedding Present through alcohol overindulgence, and missed part of The Fall's set at Warwick in 86. Only New Order miss was a tragedy - missed the encore at Bradford 84, a fine rendition of Thieves Like Us !

I didn't see Loop at Portsmouth Poly. Lush were the support band, and I was only interested in them, so I left before the main act came on.

I also left Reading 89 before those twats The Mission took to the stage. The fact that I managed to get my car through all those tents in the dark still amazes me.

Walked out of Depeche Mode after 4 songs (ironically during 'It's No Good'!) at the M.E.N arena - shite sound, shite venue and annoying audience, in all it was cheese - Dave Gahan should get back on the scag!!

Bored shitless at Spiritualized at Manchester Academy, really self-indulgent. One of my mates is a huge fan and was in agreement. I think we almost made an hour.

Didn't see much of Underworld supporting New Order at Ally Pally 98 as again the sound was terrible, all i could hear was bass which is a shame coz i really like em too. Seen em before and they were great.

Walked out on an Oasis gig about 5 years ago. Only went coz part of our group pulled out at the last moment, and I thought I'd give them a chance.

The audience was full of tossers and the show was fucking boring. No different to listening to the CD at home.

So I sat outside and got ridiculously stoned instead. Much more fun.

you said "walked out of" does it count if you are carried out on a strecher because you passed out through 40C heat/alcohol/an entire days moshing/an unwise combination of drugs? because i did that during the Happy Mondays at the Big Day Out one year, 2000 or 2001 if i recall.

but i was enjoying their set up until then.

garbage took forever to get onstage after the massive set new order did & remember half the crowd leaving once the order had finished.

My brother-in-law gave my wife and I his tickets to Steely Dan in 1996(?), so we gave it a shot.

God, did that suck. Unbearable. Fagan and Becker very obviously collected the money in advance and didn't give a flying fukq. The band was made up of bright and shiny honors grads of the Musicians Institute of Technology...soulless, by-the-numbers lite Jazz 101 wank...like walking into a jazz band class rehearsal in high school. Hang on a second, my ears have begun to bleed...

That's better. Fagan got up and walked around aimlessly, like friggin' Igor had escaped from Dr. Frankenstein's lab and was in search of his missing neck. He had an electric piano in front of him, but God knows if it was even plugged in. Walter Becker went on and on and on introducing the generic band of never-will-bes and his one suck-ass new track, Jack of Speed. Imagine my amusement when, like, six years later, they play that on the Grammys or somewhere and win best album.

Did I mention it sucked? The greatest danger was sitting among thousands of people who were apparently enjoying this shit...I told the missus, "We've got to get out of here." The audience were obviously stricken by some evil hypnotic ray which made them eat up this crap and smile while doing it. We passed our prime ticket stubs to two nice 30-something dykes trapped out on the lawn area and escaped.

The absolute best part of that whole night was hearing Beck's "Where It's At" on the radio in the parking lot. Best song Steely Dan ever did.

Eat Static. They didn't sound to bad actually but I'd stumbled across the gig by accident. I thought I knew a short cut to the uni bar and got lost. due to being unfamiliar with my surroundings;).As I say they were o.k. but I was on the prowl and the audience erm, wasn't very glamorous.

A friend of a friend's dad gave me a couple of tickets to see Eric Clapped out at sheffield about 5 years ago - lasted 3 songs before i had the good sense to leave

I saw New Order at Reading 98 of course, and then wandered over to see Spiritualized, before coming back for Garbage. Didn't miss New Order!!!!

I had to walk out on the first of the Brixton gigs last year :( only to the toilets mind (damn my copious pre gig beer consumption!!) I was bursting to go ever since Regret came on but just couldnt bear to walk out during that song.. and what did they go and play after that.. only bloody Ceremony!! aaarghhh... still managed to zip out at 60mph to 60mph ;)

Completely astonished and actually quite angry in a weird kinda way at the amount of people milling around the back and standing in the foyer on the stairs chatting away. I felt like saying what the 'effin hell you doing out here NewOrder are playing u fuckin fools!! Still i only missed 1 song and when i returned on Friday night i didnt make the same mistake twice ;)

After some heavy thinking i finally remembered the One gig i walked out: the Swans, somewhere in the eighties in the Amsterdam Paradiso...my god, not only was it terrible 'music', it was also so loud that it was unhealthy for one's eardrums!!:D Walking out of New Order gigs? Yeah remember that! apparently upto 20,000 people were said to have left after NO, and Shirley Manson comes on stage and says "How are we supposed to follow that?"

she sure did - they aslo put some lyrics of one of the order songs (was it temptation?) into one of their songs! didn't help frankly.

I left DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist's big 7" scratch fest a couple years ago. Worst gig in terms of disappointment would have to be the Charlatans in 2000 here in Seattle. Fell asleep at the back because they fucking SUCK now. Oasis wanna be's. They are dreadful. That North Country Boy nonsense made my head hurt. Woke up when everything went quiet and new from previous reports the best was yet to come...Sprotson Green! Maybe 3 good songs the whole night and none of them were written after 92. Burgess deserves to be chewed up and spit out of the horrendous Hollywood life he's chosen. His music sucks and he's more annoying than Morrissey which is a big feat.

Strange you say that, coz though I quite like them, when I saw them live I thought they were crap. Just nothing about them....Think I may have ended up outside getting wasted again I if I remember rightly....

I used to really enjoy the Charlatans. Up to our Hips was pretty good but after that, they lost the plot. I didn't even consider seeing them when they stopped by recently. I loved their show in NewOrleans right after UpToOURHips came out. They played tons of tracks i loved like: TheOnlyOneIKnow, Weirdo, SprotsonGreen, Patrol...Burgess came out in a super-tight superman t-shirt talking about eating taco's and rambling about a superman in a superland. he kept repeating "superman in a superland" over and over again. I will never buy another charlatans album. I don't like rock and roll.

I walked, err, IN to a gig once. We went to see the Fall at Cov Poly and stayed in the bar until the final song of the encore and made a grand entrance to Hit the North.

Left Inspiral Carpets before the encore to catch a train which we missed and ended up going back to see the last song of the encore.

At Glasto in 1990 walked back to my tent as Sinead O'Connor was playing but I could still here her warbling back on the hill. Though I did the same with many bands that year.

My Bloody Valentine on the 1992 Rollercoaster tour with Jesus And Mary Chain (also featuring Dinosaur Jr. and a pretty whacked Blur) - - I know this is terrible thing to say, being a huge fan and that, but, does anyone else here share my thoughts on how fucking TERRIFYING their encore of "You Made Me Realise" was back then? All FIFTEEN minutes of that fearsome middle chord. At truly Planet-shredding volume? I noticed loads of people like me were backing off after about eight minutes cos it was simply too much to take, love the song though we do, I certainly wasn't gonna risk being deaf for the rest of my life. Fuck me! But WHAT a band live!!

Another gig I walked out on was a support band - What Katy Did Next - who opened for The Beautiful South on their first ever tour in summer 1989 - this was in Newcastle Mayfair (i think) where I saw them. They were so fucking atrocious I legged it after four songs - so bad that I had to ask the door man to tell me when they came off so I could rejoin the punters. I believe they got a fair share of boos anyway, so I wasn't alone. Utter CRAP!. If memory serves me right, they supported Heato's mob for their NEXT tour as well, which goes to show what a bunch of vindictive cunts the B.S. were then, making their fans suffer such an appalling band TWICE.....

Oh - the last band I walked out on - was PLACEBO in 1998 - Fucking SHITE!. Me friend Adam and his girlfriend Cass took me to see em but I was fucking underwhelmed by the hype I scooted after the middle point of their dreadful set. Couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. I've hated Brian Molko even more ever since....

I always wear a pair of Mack's Pillow Soft ear plugs to concerts, so hell yes, I was crunched right up against the stage at the Empire Club in Cleveland and soaking it in as lesser beings crumbled and fell around me in piles of bodies. Kevin and crew...they made me realise...oh yes.

That'd be an easy call: Simple Minds. It must've been about 87 or so, just as they began their descent into mediocrity. Opened with Waterfront, which was nice, but then played a bunch of new songs that plodded along rather sluggishly. Found myself staring at the ceiling at times. The only concession to their early stuff was a perfunctory version of Love Song. By then, too little, too late.

The night wasn't a total loss though; Shriekback was quite entertaining as the opener, and as it was snowing quite heavily that night, I spent the night in Portland with a friend. ;)

I walked out of one of Melbourne's own bands, Violetine, chiefly because they were tosspots. Sounded not unlike someone shitting in my ear. BTW, Jarvo - weren't the Underground Lovers pitiful @ The Metro? I almost felt compelled to get onstage and apologise to all the tourists. As for the locals, well, you should have known better (myself included) than to turn up early. CTD

Ahh, must've been before they signed w/MCA and The Burning World. Never saw any of their gigs in the first few years, of which 99.7% of accounts from those years agree w/you about the unhealthiness of it all.

Don't like too much of their stuff, but New Mind is great: an evangelistic sermon ala Jimmy Swaggart about the mortal dangers of sex over a thumping sub-Sabbath riff/beat. All done tongue in cheek of course. At MAXIMUM volume.

The one time I caught 'em, they were using acoustic guitars and such, but still plenty loud indeed.

Ned's Atomic Dustbin in 1992 at Leeds Uni - I was 16 then, and a few of me schoolmates at the time were into these big-panted fraggle bands (Wonder Stuff/Carter/EMF/Senseless Things) so they thought they'd ask me to go along with them so I could enjoy a mosh or two - turned out to be the biggest pile of crap I've ever witnessed - absolute shit, and all those skinny fucking stagedivers and their sweaty hairy armpits and manky legs everywhere - fuck me. I left after half an hour...I think I've not seen much of those mates since - musical differences, heh heh....

About 3 years ago The Fall were playing in my local club (LVC in Leiden). I like some of their stuff and because it was so close me and my brother went. LVC is a very small place (takes about 300 people) and it was about half full. To summarize : the concert was crap. MES was obviously very drunk and left the stage after about 3 songs; he came back 5 minutes later. At one point when he was going off again one of the band members was pulling him and there nearly was a fight. The crowd wasn’t too pleased (I remember Mark saying : ‘Piss Off?? You piss off!!’) and he was complaining about the sound in the middle of a song while he kept singing. After about 5 songs (we mostly got instrumentals) we decided to go to the bar in the back and have a few beers. Ten minutes later it was all over… So technically I didn’t walk out, but that was mainly due to the fact that it only lasted for half an hour :) Of course we had a good laugh afterwards and looking back this was my favourite worst concert.

Sounds like an average Fall gig these days to me !
