Why they hate so much “MOVEMENT”? I like it.

I presume that all NO members (or some of them) hate Movement:

1. Movement songs aren’t played live for almost 20 years (the last was Denial in 86). Older songs are being played live like EGG or In a Lonely Place or even JD songs.

2. Barney stated that he hates the album and don’t even owns a copy of it.

3. Dreams Never End was actually the last Movement song to be played live by a NO member, but not by NO, Hooky played it with revenge in early 90’s.

OK it’s not the best NO album, but has very good songs especially, the ones that Hooky sing like Dreams Never End and Doubts even Here.

Yes, it's the best NO album, but they'll never play anything from it again. I guess they feel that it's a wrong move and that they found their true sense of direction when they unleashed the sequencers/new synths with EGG, Temptation etc. The releationship with Martin Zero wasn't great either. It's a pity, because it's a bloody fantastic record and not like anything that they or anyone else have done. I think only Barney really dislikes it though.

The production is appalling. Muddy, busy, and crowded. The mixing is ropey. The vocals are underconfident, mumbled, and difficult to discern. It sounds like a bad JD tribute band.

Barney says the lyrics sound like he's imitating someone he isn't.

The Peel Sessions versions are OK, but if they carried on like "Movement" for the next 20 years, they'd be a long forgotten obscurity, like those two Doors albums made after Jim Morrision died, or the Velvet Underground after Lou Reed quit.

For me, Movement is a very interesting album as it shows the band trying hard to find its new way. Some tracks like Chosen Time already show this new direction, but - of course - they weren't able to reinvent themselves completely all at once and write Blue Monday already in 1980/1981. And if they had done so everyone would have said: 'Look at these bastards... Now that they have lost Ian they start doing this f*****g disco-music!' But this is a very old debate, isn't it?! Wonder who will be right...

It's a great album; glad that they kept moving further into the dance music seam thou'... Movement was borderline Goth, but it was a mix of what JD were and what NO became; sort of like Dr. Who in a prolonged transformation; as such it's very interesting, but maybe they don't want to play from it as it was a sad time and they hadn't found their feet...?

The album is pretty good, but sound-wise, it doesn't sound nearly as good as anythign else they've done. When you listen to live versions of the songs from that album (the early 80s shows before PC&L) they were really good, unlike any other band that was playing then. Maybe they should pull a Gang of Four move and re-record it

I've always vouched for the Peel Sessions. Having that and 316 before I bought the album, I was a tad disappointed when I got Movement. It was the production that pissed me off. On Unknown Pleasures, Hannett directed with vision. On Closer, I've read the group actually took on co-producing. With Movement, they were all recovering while trying to progress, and I think Hannett took advantage of the situation and treated the album like an experiment and not an album he was making with the band that helped him earn his reputation.

I think those early singles are vibrant because they were the best songs New Order had at that point, and recording singles are not taxing in the same way making an album is.

Dreams Never End is the forgotten classic NO song. Love Hooky's intensity when this was done live.

Movement is very heavy compard to what went after it and Hooky especially is trying to imitate Ian's vocals. Musically it is very good.

I would love to here renditions of ICB, The Him and Doubts Even Here (that song's intro is like funeral procession music!). If Hooky tried doing DEH in his serious (goodbye Ian) mode I would piss myself.

When it first came out I wished the production was more like Closer, but I think that initial reaction was just the shock of hearing something so original and unusual. Over the years I've come to appreciate just how good MH's production is.

i love DNE, but other than that i think it's rather boring. none of the other songs stand out and barney's voice is far too deep for his range...it doesn't sound natural.

I have every one of their albums up till Get Ready, most of which I bought for my own listening pleasure, but some were promos for the station. For some reason, I stopped getting promos in recent years from Factory though, for my radio shows...(maybe they need their mailing list updated or my info got deleted...it happens.) However, I like em all, and all of them reflect a different sound and a different state of progress....Maybe it is a bit rough around the edges, and being from a bad time for the band, with sad memories, could be why they dislike it....but I sometimes like music to be a bit under-produced. Most "pop" bands nowadays sound quite over-produced, to be honest, many of them sounding alike and all of them depending on computers to make their music instead of doing it with real studio kit...and I find a trip in the other direction to be refreshing. I think it is an interesting LP. I give it airplay alot when I DJ on the air. I'd buy it again...

But Doubts Even Here it's not Barney's voice it's hooky that sings it.

Movement is New Order staring boldly into the past. By 1981, Hannett was about to finally lose all patience with Factory (Fairlight computer) and just never had as much interest with the band after Ian croaked.

Nevertheless, listening to NO's attempts at self-production on Temptation in 1982, I cringe to think how Movement would sound if Hannett had not been at the controls in '81.

Maybe the sound was more like the sound of the "Pell Sessions"

I hope that DNE might return to the setlist one day. I think that movement is great, but some of the songs do sound the same, therefore i can't always instantly tell which track is which when I first hear it.

In fact I hope all the tracks return to the setlist, but it ain't gonna happen.

It is awesome, Denial and Senses are amongst the best they have ever done !

Movement is a classic album, its a great chill out record has some really good songs, but i really think that most people hate it because they heard it after they heard new order on their later efforts First(i heard it maybe 8 or 9 years after its release) and they are dissapointed that it wasnt very new order-ish . well thats my theory anyway great album it stands alone and i never get tired of it

I really love Movement - I think it has some killer songs. Unfortunatley it suffers from poor production - but I listen to it all the time anyways. Really underrated, I think.

It's the dog's bollox! It's the album I still play the most,apart from Singles.Production is spot on.Still love Senses and The Him,they sound like no other.Although I've got the 316 DVD (aka Taras gig),I'd have loved to see that gig in person!

Wow, apart from Dreams Never End, I don't like the rest of the songs on the album - fairly forgettable...

This album i like it!!!! The songs of this album are very sad, I love Truth and The Him, and is the best album of New Order, but the problem is Barney that tryed to sing like Ian Curtis!!

I think if you listen to it in the mindset that it was made so soon after Ian Curtis' death and the band finding their feet, it's a wonderful album. Against the stuff they later went on to produce, it does sound dated. Never the less, I'd love to hear some of it played live again.

It couldnt have sounded any worse surely? At least you can hear the vocals on Temptation.
