a long fine time ago

I was just thinking about how fine time was the first single released off technique and its really different than most new order songs. what were your guys reactions when this came out? did it make it seem all of technique would sound like this?

It is very different, I had always thought that. I would almost consider it instrumental, or at least to the effect of Don't Do It. At first, I thought it was obnoxious. But now I like it.

Just the opposite here. At first, I loved it but now I can't stand to hear past the intro. Fine Time could have been a good b-side with Don't Do It wedged inbetween Vanishing Point and Dream Attack on the album. Not as bad as Slow Jam, but nearly unlistenable now.

I'm in Mr Hagen's boat here.. I rocked by it initially, but I was quite into the acid thing at the time. These days it's an album track I mostly skip..

Still. Things travel in circles don't they? The original '83 versions of Confusion sounded terribly dated for much of the late '80s onwards. I love dropping those simple electro sounds now- especially the Instrumental version.

i don't know - i was only 5 when technique was released. my musical tastes had not branched out any further than kylie minogue and jason donovan :(

Terrible sleeve design as well. I reckon it should have been a cherub variation or another statue head.

I beg to differ Geaux - i think that sleeve was probably the only time the packaging on a New Order record gave a fair representation of the content within. Can't think of any other one of their releases that has achieved this. Having said that my opinion on Fine Time mirrors that almost exactly of Allen Jarvis: I thought the tune was "shite - what the frig do they think they're doing???!!" when I first heard it, but then it kind of grew on me. But - thankfully, not all of Technique sounded anything like it. A happy red herring then, IMHO.

AGREED ON LISTENING FINE TIME IS QUITE HARD WORK BUT BACK IN 1865 WHEN I USED TO GO BOOZING REGULAR AROUND SUNNY DERBY...THERE WAS THIS LITTLE CLUB THAT PLAYED FINE TIME EVERY WEEK FOR ABOUT 5 WEEKS...IT SOUNDS QUITE DIFFERENT ND IS GOOD FUN WHEN YOU HAVE HAD ABOUT 7 CRATES OF RED STRIPE...BUT I HOPE NO-ONE EVER VIDEOD ME DANCING TO IT...THEY WOULD THROW AWAY THE KEY
