Asking again....Hooky's radio show....

Long time ago i asked about this and got blank looks.

some time in the late 80's or early 90's I remember a show, or series of shows, on the halcyon days of electronic music, and music tech in general. And it was presented by, none other Than Mr Hook. It must have been Radio One, as I never listenned to anything else back then.

does ANYONE remember this?

It's where I got the info about them having three identical keyboard rigs, and as hooky put it "good job we still had accoustic songs to fall back on" There was also some funny stuff from Phil Oakey about a MEGAvital human league gig, with half the londond record industry there, where all their machinery went completely fucking mental because the hall filled up so fast (analogue gear and changing ambient conditions...LOL is all I'm saying, that and thank fuck MY moog's a mid70's model that can stay in tune.....although it's scaling does go a bit jazz now and then)

Part of the reason I'm so desperate to hear it again, apart from it being informative and typically hilarious, is that he played one particular record that I must hear again.

(if you've ever heard "outlands" by The Orb, this was clearly the track they'd stolen it from, as it had the same riff, but with a class vocal over it saying something like "everybody loves the sunshine"...it was a LONG time ago)

Jack, if you're readin this, maybe you can find out if no other sod can.....maybe I tripped the entire thing in one of those mushroom indueced time eddies, I heard 3 half hour shows in 3 secs :D )

Talking of The Orb.Has anybody got any idea if it's them that did a track with a line that goes "Mr Pocalypse nowww" repeatedly.It had a fantastic funky bassline and rythm to it.The track might even be called Mr Apocalypse.I heard it at a Liquid Connective party we went to in June last year.Lying outside the chillout tent watching the dawn clouds having an orgy in the sky (i had partaken in a particular hallucinogen obviously).At the time i was convinced it was a track The Orb did with Thomas Dolby of all people.Can't trace it anywhere however

Well, I've pretty much got everything that The Orb have ever done, and it's not something that immediately springs to mind... Sounds intriguing, though, especially a collaboration between LX and Thomas Dolby! :)

And still no one knows a bloody thing about this show. Seriously starting to think I tripped the whole thing.

Sorry don't know this. But whilst looking around the internet for music to listen to I found WFMU Cherry Blossom Clinic fm. I went into the archives and found Martin Moscrop of ACR in interview. He did 2 interviews 1 in 12 April 2002 and also Dec 4 2004. They played ACR music + other music also some JD tracks. He talked about sharing rehearsal rooms with JD, also about Factory and other groups. If you haven't heard these interview already - you might find them interesting.

When republic was released radio 1 had a new order day, where each member of the band presented (or co-presented) a show and republic stuff got played a lot.

This might be what you mean, but my heads very mushy about the mid 80's to mid 90's

Pretty sure it was before republic.

And I'm fairly sure it was more than one part too.

For that matter I'm still trying to find the full BBC substance series.

I think I've got it on god old c120 tape, to get ech part on one side, I'll have a root around the loft.

yes twas something on an adventure. But hey, it's my own fault for sitting listening to NO for 20 years and thinking "na, they wont be so good they'd be worth going over to the mainland to see". Oh yee of little faith :(

NOOLday is not going to be a repeat, I'm gonna act sensible and travel like a human being on this one.

Maybe Hooky didn't actually present it, but my memory of it contains so much editorial comment from him he could only have been the anchor......it would cut to an interview with say, Andy M. from OMD, and then back to Hooky who would throw in a scarey NO anecdote to back him up. I'm CERTAIN it was this show on which he mentioned the triple redundant keybords that would triple fail and leave them playing accoustic material (I'll just wipe away a tear for the now dead silicon band members).

It had a catchy, pun title about machinery I recall....something not unlike that Ch4 show "the shape of things that hum" (such a great show BTW, despite them playing BM on a 909 on the intro music)

Well i guess it probably wasn't The Orb.But in my tripped out state that early morning it sounded THE fucking funkiest thing i'd ever heard in my life.It incorporated one of those instruments that makes a ... aw fuck i cant describe it.Nearest i can get is to describe it as the sound of a zip.But thats not even close.But the way its threaded into the bass and rythm was the bollocks.The recurring vocal was "MISTER POCALYPSE NOWWW." in an arch professor type way and i thought at the time it was Dolby with The Orb and was on the Pomme Fritz alum.But when i finally got home and back to reality and dug out that album it wasn't on there.But the track does exist but obviously by somebody completely unassociated with The Orb or Thomas Dolby

Oddly enough, my instant reaction to anything that fucks my mind up in a club is "is that The Orb"....it's usually a safe bet too :) Alex is another JD/NO fan too :)

That's so me. These days, though, it's becoming increasingly harder and harder to find people who remember the Orb in any detail; most I got from a few friends is "Is that that band who did that song on that one record that we listened to while at that rave in that field at 4am?"

At which point, we would all stare at each other in silent contemplation, wondering which event they may or may not be talking about.

It's hard to find people with a clear memory of The Orb on the coach home usually.

After a particularly terrifying gig in The Point Depot in Dublin (the telling of which would make my Apollo pilgrimage thread pale), where Alex+full live band of pot smoking loons, had beaten our skulls in for 2 and a half hours.....most of my mates were of the opinion that...."the orb were shite, man, they only played for like 20 mins".

I've never done anything stronger than guiness and green for an Orb gig, and I've still ended up not sleeping for DAYS afterwards. (NO decimated that record, it was only 3 days ago I got some sleep proper and that took pills!...I get TOTALLY high on music, right off my tits, it terrifies most people). I got them stoned in Dublin last year...proudest moment of my life before meeting Wilson and Hooky within 10 days of each other.

As for 4am in a field. We do these coastal parties, used to be every year, now it's about 1 in 3 cos the main suspects have kids and stuff :( It didn;t matter what vibe was happening, what was playing, who was playing, or who was doing what in reaction to it...... the minture the sun peeped over the seaward horizon, the music stopped. Always a minutes silence then A huge ever growing pulsating brain that rules from the centre of the ultraworld (the dance mix that starts with just minnie ripperton singing "loving u" over an earthquake. Little fluffy clouds. Belfast by orbital Strings of Life Alphawave sys 7(plasticman mix) Police usually arrive before that ends at house parties, but outside you get to play the full 20 minute glory :)

then we turn the system over to which ever twat was playing before the ceremony.

WHICH IS WHY to get back to my original topic... I really want to hear this radio show of Hooky's again, there was a track that sounded like "outland" by the orb....but it had a vocal, and it rocked. That and that the bassmonster was on total fun form.
