Hopefully I'm not being too cynical...but aren't these award shows often used as publicity tools etc. Warner's probably knew that most of the voters (I believe that they are mostly music industry insiders right) would recognize the NO name and that they might have a chance at winning. I have to believe that Warner's has some influence over who gets nominated etc...and while they can't control it they can certainly make a pitch to the nominators.

Warner's wants to get as much mileage out of the investment that they have already made (WFTSC, Remixes and the tracks for the next album) so keeping NO's name out and about makes sense.

Also, this would let them put a sticker on reissues of WFTSC or a single that said "grammy nominated/grammy winning" that would help in marketing. Plus a grammy would let them pitch the next album as "grammy nominated/grammy winning" artist New Order etc...

The lifetime acheivement/godlike genius type of awards are also pretty much industry/record label controlled as well...they usually have to have some merit but its not an accident that NO won awards right around when WFTSC was being released and marketed.

I'm delighted that they're at least nominated...but aren't these awards pretty biased in terms of whatever is "mainstream"? Judging by the poor taste of the US mainstream media...it'd take a miracle for New Order to win. I think New Order are talented and they deserve recognition, but it's just there's too many crappy, talentless, "I-can't sing-a-damn-tune-but-I-can-wiggle-my-butt-good" people in the "mainstream" media...and those "mainstream" people would probably win instead of the people who deserve to win...

If the dance category had been around for the past twenty years, the likes of NO would've probably won already.

It just took that long for the US music establishment to recognise there was life outside of rock, R&B, C&W, etc.

The Chemical Brothers helped rock that boat with several nominations and a win for Block Rockin Beats (Best Rock Instrumental 1997).

Guys, the Grammys are absolutely lame. It is an insult to be nominated.

These people nominate one of two groups to major categories: the year's big sellers, and old jurassic "legends."

They SURELY don't know about dance music. What the hell is "dance" music? I can dance to anything. One of the albums nominate for Best Dance Album is Human After All.

Hopefully the 'MTV Dance' channel will give it some nods... If this had been released properly they could promote Guilt with it's non-existent video...

i haven't taken any awards shows seriously nor watched them for some years, although should my favoirte band make an appearance.... but then i' have to sit through all that hip hop. then again what is mtv europe doing on my telly now.

against the odds i hope they win. i like the song.

The Grammy's is NOT, nor has it ever been, a credible entity. It has always been a masturbatory pop-elite annual lame-assed party. They occassionally pull in rock and pop 'outsiders' to somehow lend credibility to thier proceedings, but it rarely holds forth. It is most often just a showcase for the artists that have sold about a billion copies during that particular year....and it is almost always all about the 'AdultContemporary' market...

If it DID have credibility, we all know that TrueFaith, Regret, or Crystal would have pulled in a nod, and BlueMonday would have pulled in a life acheivement award for itself....It has had a longer shelf life than even any of those JackoThriller songs.

How 'Guilt' got a nod is a true mystery....if this is a 'career recognition' nod, then why not Krafty? Mind you, I LOVE Guilt, and I am tickled to freaking death that this nomination has occured.

Why does this nomination please me? Validation...it will allow for SALES to rise in the US, thereby increasing the band's visibilty to the persons around me, thereby validating my obsession with the band.

We should take note, this would be a very good time for the boys to get their butts into the studio to spit-shine those leftovers for the next album, including all singles and remixes.....take advantage of this awareness..it will wear off quickly.

AND...congrats boys...it's long overdue.

it seems that with No at this stage in the career, 'validation' or nods from the music industry voters in the US might be a catalyst for the record company to pay more attention to the band in light of the past decade where promotion, availablity of product, releasing of remixes has been slightly lower on their priority schedule. it seems that Warner is marketing DM and New order almost identically as retro bands and banking on their catalogue in order to push sales. since 'DM has never been nominated in these high profile awards, maybe this will push New order from a "C" priority into a higher level and we could possibly see/hear more from the band as a result.

as lame as the grammies are, this is still a step in an interesting direction. no harm can come from this exposure and even if they don't win, for whatever reason they decided to nominate them 'now' for "guilt" is beyond me, but being professionals at their own game, i hardly think this would fill their heads. if anything, they are probably giggling at the fact at being invited to attend the ceremony. would love to see hooky hammered on the red carpet walking arm in arm with gwen stefani, with stephen and gillian pushing their offspring chewing on a mars bar while 'blue monday' spills from the speakers outside the ceremonies venue. godlike, indeed.

fyi...It should be noted that Depeche Mode and Madonna's albums came out too late for the material to qualify...

Sorry to say this, but Kylie Minogue is going to win. She has the breast cancer issue. And because of that they will vote for her. (But I do wish her well.)

And tell me if I'm wrong, but didnt Britney Spears "Toxic" win that award last year? and yes it was on tv.

What are you talking about? The last Brits award I saw New order were all over it. Namecheck from Gwen Strefani, 'covered' somewhat by Robbie Williams and they won an award for something, I don't remember.

It usually seems that the Grammy's are catered toward American acts than British, unless it's an act like the Spice Girls. I've watched the awards a few times in years' past, mostly when bands I liked were nominated, and it's dominated by American acts. Back in 1997, I do recall the Spice Girls were nominated for something or other and Kylie Minogue pops up here and there. Americans, however, do seem to take these awards seriously. I remember when I was in high school, my mother asked me if I liked Dave Matthews. I told her that his music was absolutely boring. She said, "He won a Grammy for something. He mustn't be that bad." Just goes to show what kind of cack is getting nominated for awards over here.

Fuck the Grammys. But I hope The Order wins. Occasionally they get it right, for example when Tool won for best performance (Aeonawhawawawa sp). But look how often they get it wrong. George Micheal winning best R&B artist, like Flava Flave said "Rong Branch." Or the year the Police won for best instrumental for the worst song on Zenyatta Mondatta, Behind My Camel, when The Other Way of Stopping was a clearly better track but did not get the nomination.

First thing re. NO's nomination for the Grammys; Fooking not before time that's for sure- in actuality they should have had a nomination back in 1987 for the original version of True Faith!! Be that as it may, I hope they still win it for Guilt though- about time you Yank record exec bastards caught up with reality!!(BTW- if it does, I hope it means an immediate worldwide CD release of the rare-as-rockinghorseshit collection of remixes a lot of us have or are already facing paying through the nose for via Ebay).

For what it's worth Stuart Price is also nominated in the remixed recording category, but the Grammy site refers to him as Jacques Lu Cont, remixer for The Killer's "Mr. Brightside (Jacques Lu Cont's Thin White Duke Mix)". He's a hard man to keep track of apparently. Hears hoping that NO get the award (not that they'll go)...

I think it's funny that at least 3/5 of the other nominees would be embarassed to win against New Order... The Chems and Fatboy are students of NO, and Kylie borrowed Blue Monday and then NO borrowed her back.

I can't see LCD Soundsystem winning and I've never heard of Deep Dish.

What I don't get is Jetstream had a far larger presence here in America than GIAUE -- it's so curious that maybe they're there to win.

In the end, I am so proud to be a New Order fan these days... caught a great show in Chicago this summer, WFTSC is a fantastic record, and they're gigging for some very worthy causes. I'm happy to see 'em get love from anyone.

Deep Dish are a major force in club music, for a couple years now. they released a great album this year. Theyve been doing very popular house remixes for years now.

this song, Flashdance, was tops on Club charts worldwide, and seemed to hang around for at least the first half of this year. The followup song, Say Hello, is WONDERFUl and topped the charts this summer. The new single is also doing well..its called Sacramento, and features none other than Rich Morel on Vocals.
