I sometimes wonder what people are expecting to hear. It is just a record after all (and i am a 15 year plus NO obsessive!). I have the album on almost constant rotation. As usual (for NO) it is catchy and most of the songs grow on you over time(always a good sign in my view.) I think at this stage the first 5 songs are very strong, the second five maybe less so (But still good and growing on me). New Order lyrics have never been the greatest in my opinion. The best are often when they are taking the piss ("leave me alone" anyone?) Why should this record be any different? The themes are much the same. A lot of people seem to be critical of Rock the Shack, but it is catchy as hell and for me more Joy Division influenced. My wife thought they were singing "Rotten Shag"!! The bottom line is this Album is right up there with PCL or Brotherhood. It is more varied than Low Life and has a harder edge than Technique. Given it is 2001, can we really expect anymore. They are playing together again and having a good time doing it. I can not ask for anymore. I will be buying the CD on release day. So should you!

I have a copy too, and i think that the extended version of Crystal is excellent, I hope this finds its way onto the single release. I also love Vicious Streak and Someone Like You. For JD fans you should check out Primitive Notion, really hard edged song in the JD vein. Even though I have a copy of the promo album I will still buy the offical version when it gets released.
I finally gave in and downloaded some of the other tracks. (I already had 60 mph, turn my way and Crystal).
Fuck. Primitive Notion is so interesting. It is like New Order and Joy Division fused. For me, as a JD/NO fan for a long, long time, this is very, very good.
I just downloaded them, but so far i like that one and Close Range.

ok - i've only had the promo in my hands for a couple of hours. i've been a new order fan for (i've just counted) 18 years. my inital impressions are that yes - the full version of crystal is much better than the radio edit that's been floating around the net for a while. the other track that really does it for me (so far) is primitve notion. the others 60mph, turn my way, vicious streak, slow jam and close range i think will also grow quickly on me. rock the shack - sorry, don't like it. the chorus is (in my opnion) slightly embarrasing. someone like you, run wild, yeah not sure about those either. the main thing for me is that hooky's bass is back - that is a very big part of new order's appeal to me. i certainly will be purchasing the cd when it comes out, after all i have always loved the sleeve designs. www.newordergetready.com is very slick. i've heard a rumour that new order may be playing the big day out festivals in january 2002. the last time i saw new order live was 1987 (revenge when i lived in england). i would kill to see them play some joy divison songs. isolation from the 316 dvd is awesome. i had ridiculous expectations for this record, as i'm sure many others have. it's not going to change my world like the early/mid eighties albums, but there is no doubt that new order has in some way moulded me into the person i am today, and the world would be a much poorer place without them. they have (and still do) provide me with some of the most amazing musical moments of my life. can't ask for much more than that really. I didn't have/hear it it til the day it was released on August bank holiday 2001.Those were days way before i got into downloading/previewing before releases.Bought the CD from Sainsburys ha ha then lay in the sunshine in the back garden listening to it on my headphones.My then girlfriend got well pissed off because she wanted to go out for the day as it was bank holiday but it was too momentous a day to do anything like that 
My first impressions after the final notes of Run Wild signalled the end of the very first listen to the album were 'is that it?:\ohwell: ' Think we did actually go out for the afternoon after that.Was only in the days after that i got into it a bit more.Vicious Streak was my fave track at first back then.

I am glad you like it. But to me it just doesnt sound like New Order at all. Its only Hooky that stops it from sounding embarrassing and whoever would have thought that a band who could produce something as majestic as vanishing point could lower themselves to the level of Rock the Shack. Sirens call is a pile of cack aswell. Someone needs to get Barney back on the Pernod and E.
its a very good record, and I think it's up there with the prime of the 80's output. Better in fact - less 'duff' tracks.
Take out Slow Jam / Rock The Shack and replace with bsides Sabotage / Player In The League and then Get Ready starts to resemble more of a solid LP.
Come to think of it, replace 60 MPH with the Radio Edit and Run Wild with the original Steve Osborne mix and you've arrived 
Turn My Way is easily the worst song on that lp.
And not because of Corgan. It isn't his fault. The duet is mixed horribly and just doesn't work, and the song is lackluster.
At least Rock the Shack is fun.
