I love the ending, the piano sorta goes off key and someone says something. It sounds like a studio mistake left in on the final product, but I'm sure it might've been planned like that

i do believe it is Bernard that plays the piano. is it not the most CRYPTIC of all the Joy Division songs? ANd isn't it cool how it goes into Decades? Do you all know what the song is about? I do! Ian wrote it about a boy with i believe epilepsy or down's syndrome and how he used to see him by his house....if i am wrong, correct me, i read that somewhere about the song, but you know things are......!

I think you're right Ed. I read it was about a boy with a disability who was confined to is home throughout his childhood.

i think that closer was set up specifically for 24 hours being the last gasp of desperate fury for ian and joy division before they returned with eternal and decades, colder than ever. this goes for their entire career, not just the album. love will tear us apart, which was released around the same time, is a strangely subdued song for ian. ceremony is energetic and poppy, but emotionally cold. in a lonely place, even more so than the end of closer, is a statement of absolute deadened detachment, which basically negates ceremony anyway. ian's voice on the box set version is fucking scary.

Yeah, thats right. Ian saw this boy sat outside a house and years later when Ian went back to the same place the boy was still there, just the same. Great song.
