So I guess the idea that everyone participating had to be a member of NOOL by the start date got scrapped then? And just how many people jumped on the bandwagon last time without this publicity? Hope you are ready to be inundated!

every bunch of cunts who want exposure too.

Well that's all us lot boned....lots of sneaky record company funded wankers no doubt.

Well, that date was removed yes, but that date was for voting, not to submit a song.

Obviously, the people have to log on here to do so, and if I remember well, the first time around a lot of people did jump in the band wagon and several of these people are now part of this Community (feline, Mr Campbell and Mr Bentley for instance)

I always said I wanted the follow up to be a little different, it had to be, so if this means more quality, let it be so.. although you have to know something, it's the members that will vote, it's the members that will decide.

And this means more exposure for all bands participating, and I swear to you that NOOL regulars will have a lot of exposure, and previous Community bands too... especially if you send me pictures so I can put them on the random picture of the Community website.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking at it from a perspective of "it lessens our chances", as quality will always shine through regardless of who it is doing the song. I'm just a bit concerned, with my risk management hat on, that existing members who may have fancied submitting a cover will be put off by this blatant appeal to big names to come along and take the ten slots.

And how are the big names gonna feel if they don't get voted in? Or do all their fans get to join the site just to vote for a new song from their favourites? What if BSP decide to submit a song, and the bullshit battalion all sign up just to vote for them and then leave, or worse still plague us with rubbish.

Can't honestly see how you can call this Community II, it isn't. It's an attempt to make a commercial release by appealing to people who may help shift units. It's not this community anymore. I hate to think what will happen if anyone with a big name does try to muscle in on it, when they start trying to call the shots. Hopefully it won't come to that.

We shall still be putting forward a submission regardless of this, as we firmly believe that we have the quality to produce another song that the NOOL members will appreciate.

You're right about that one though... but to be honest, who in the name of god would want to be on a 1000 copies limited tribute album if they had a big name.

  1. Their label won't allow it
  2. They will want to get paid for it
  3. As you said, they have everything to lose if they don't make it.

That's 2 elements you have to consider. We've been lucky the last time around when Flight was able to participate due to their label letting us do so, and Spiral of Silence as well.

To be honest, I've been looking for big names for a long time now, and the interest is just not there... the only people who have shown interest are David Potts and maybe ACR.

Oh yeah, The Echoing Green, but they wanted to participate to the first one and it was too late. But we made them clear they would need to do a new song, will they do it? I have no idea.

They all know it's a competition and they have to enter it, the only one that has a secured spot now is Pottsy because we're using his song for remix and video contest, and he's been very generous with us, even though it's a limited release, but Pottsy was aware of the first issue and was mad that his management at the moment didn't pass on the info.

As for the BSP example, if a big band does come here and do submit a song, we'll set a cut date that's for sure.. right now there is no song submitted at all, so we thought putting the deadline in November was pushing it a little...

We're indie Tim, for reasons above, I doubt any big names will want to join it...

We shall still be putting forward a submission regardless of this, as we firmly believe that we have the quality to produce another song that the NOOL members will appreciate.

And I look forward to it.

BTW, regardless of what I say, I would dream to do a real tribute album with big names on it.. but I highly doubt I have the money and what it takes to do this.. would need to have Warner involved I guess, or a label like LTM.

I don't mean to enter into a debate with my esteemed colleague Sir Old of Monkey, but ... go Spotnick! If the BBC chooses to post your press release, fuckin' A. That's huge. I have years of professional experience running press releases through the shredder at a far smaller news outlet.

First, I don't know about the whole "big names" issue. Is David Potts a big name? (No offense, Mr. Potts.) Go to any CD shop in the states and ask about David Potts. "Who?" "You know, Ram." "What, you mean the Paul McCartney record?" "No, the guy from Monaco." "Monaco?" "With Peter Hook? Revenge? New Order? Bizarre Love Triangle?" "Oh, I've heard that. Isn't that Depeche Mode?"

All I can say is, like any other "record deal," you can take it or leave it. Community 2 is a different animal. I'm going to submit something, but damn, I'm really gonna have to step up my effort now. My home office is littered with CD-Rs from remix competitions I've lost, but I keep trying.

Nic, I can understand your seeking to enhance the profile of NOOL, and to that end this publicity is a real coup.

But I suspect this issue may prove a divisive one amongst NOOLers.

Well, seems general consensus was to make a project different, which we did.. and if we do get exposure, it will only make it more interesting.

But we can't please everyone, that's for sure.. and we know it.

Well i thought the point was us, as a community taking part (and before you call me a bandwagon jumper matey, check me profile :( )...not letting any band, any bunch of fools think "oh here's an easy way to get a record out....I wonder what this New Order lot sound like".

All of us with our limited resources will be up against people with money behind them and equipment hanging out of their arses. So it doesn't really matter how good my (or anyone else's) tune is, people are always gonna be impressed by Mr shiney SSL desk with an Otari 24 track.

I've been really struggling to finish (or even properly start) the tunes I'm working on, between pain and painkillers it takes a fair bit of effort to get my brain in cubase gear let alone keep it there for more than 5 minutes. And knowing that it's now...little me Vs not just other New Order fans, but the entire population of the planet and as much time at Abbey Road as daddy can but, doesn't really inspire me to be arsed finishing them.

Didn't say you were a bandwagon jumper Steve, said you started to post at that time (unless I'm wrong, of course.. said that out of memory), and we got to know many people.

And I don't really thing now that this will affect the contest THAT MUCH...

i understand why you did it and the exposure is great....I just think we could end up with no current NOOLERs on the album, which would defeat the purpose somewhat.

I'm really, really looking forward to a new SNSS track and I swear I'll be pissed off if I don't get one.

(BTW, I just figured out what BSP stands for. It's not Boy Shop Pets.)

C'mon people: (1) This site is what it is through Nic's leadership and work, and he deserves to reap the rewards of his work and take it wherever he wants to. Go, man, go. It's called leadership, and it belongs to him. (2) No band anywhere ever recorded a song that was guaranteed a release -- unless they did it themselves. And that's always an option. License the track, record it, post it online, send a demo to Tony Wilson, whatever.

I'm serious about the SNSS cover. I'll cry if I don't get one.

Well, Steve, you have something people don't have though.. you won on the first contest, and you KNOW how people will vote.. which any "bandwagon" jumper unless he reads all the messages in the Community forum will never know.

Personally, I'd wait to see how many songs we actually get.. what I fear now is a lot of people asking around, but not submitting anything.

We got about 60 songs for the first competition, including multiple covers from the same artists.. 40 in the final round.. and that by only advertizing it on the front page.. I'll be curious to see how it goes, because to be honest, I find that there's not much activity going on right now...

And to be honest, I don't want any song from people just sending their track and not even posting replies to the thread where his song is showcased.. we had a few of these the last time around and it was sad, we also had bad experience with Unfaith, Jerusalem Uriah and.. Julio.

We have tons of ideas for the whole thing, give us a chance and I believe it will be worth the ride...

Don't give up Cambo! Carry on with your project, otherwise you may hand it over to other people who are not from NOOL. Keep the pressure on. Even if they have all that equipment, they could still be shit. Is it NOOLers that vote in the end? If so, they are going to vote for people they know are genuine members on here.

Being voted for for nepotistic reasons is little consolation, I KNOW nothing I can do will be any good compared to stuff done on analogue tape in a real studio, so if anything like that shows up, I'd feel patronised by winning.

Apart from Known Pleasures (Digital), I don't know if many bands actually went to studio.

Flight maybe? Spiral of Silence for sure...

Unless you plan to use your song for something else.. I don't think anybody should be paying for studio for this.. it's not worth it, paying 1000$ for studio time when there is be only 1000 copies.

Easy there, laddie. Leg-End Instrumental is better recorded than half the shit in my CD collection.

Chicks are not buying James Blunt records because of the amazing compression on the high-hat cymbal.

Dude, you shouldn't feel bad.

I know I've told this story before, but: local band from my hometown generates a buzz with their four-track demo. They get signed to a major (well, two of them do -- according to the label, two-man bands like Hall and Oates, OMD and, yes, Sly Fox, are the "in" thing, so buh-bye bass and drums).

Move to L.A. Good solid first album. Video on MTV's 120 Minutes.

Then, major label is sold to Japanese company. Band is dropped, even though they have a completed second album in the can. "Can we at least release it ourselves?" "No, we own it." "Can we rerecord it for another label?" "No. We own your songs. Maybe you could buy them back from us." "But we still owe you money on the advance for the first album!" "Oh yes. We'll be sending hired goons to your house to get the money."

And did they feel bad? Hell no.

Don't forget about natural musical talent either. Blinding Sun and I are working on a song recorded on our PCs. He's done a better mix on a home computer than my "name" producers did with an album that cost around $100K to record.

Well I appreciate the compliement, but it's hard to get it TOO wrong when it's ALL digital (cept the bass). But at the same time, it's aso impossible to mix much space into a track without a nice big mixing desk.

Well...I'm working on 3....if I finish more than one, we'll have us a good old fashioned vote.

For now, I'm doing Truth (electro-house), All day Long (bass porn) and YSF (YSF is the least likely as it's the one that will need most effort, although I have discovered it sounds awesome if you just bung the basic parts of it theough something like Edirol Orchestral)

Did you happen to see Bob Mould's call for videos for "Paralyzed" on the Yep Roc site? I missed that one, but it sure looked cool in my head.

Maybe he'll do it again.

I think the publicity is a good thing. Plus the fact that just about every cover submitted for 'Community' was of very high quality - both the songs that made it to the release and those that didn't.

So what if someone has access to a high profile studio? Doesn't mean that they're more talented or will produce a better cover from an artistic point of view. Sprinkle sugar on a dog turd and it's still a turd. Imagination, innovation and a love for the song covered is what's going to matter in this competition.

Kudos to Nic, Mike and Alejo for giving everyone another chance to appear on a second great compilation and good luck to all NOOLers entering any part of the competition(s) :thumb:

Jane Hoorocks and a box. Which cunt was on drugs when filming that?

As for the exposure on the BBC, it's a good thing, though I can see the problems with the voting etc...

Maybe you should limit the voting to people who have contributed something to the site over the past 5/6 years? Say, 100 posts or something like that?

Just an idea.

Remember Shug, the amount of people voting for Community 1 wasn't that big... I think Flight had something like 200 votes for their song.

The voting rules are not written YET, but we'll find a way...

I think it's really cool that you put the release out, Nick.

I'm more imagining a kid or fan of the band who hasn't been otherwise bothered to find the NOOL site who has sat around playing his or her own covers of the band who might just see that and think "Huh, awesome" and actually be bothered to not only submit their track for competition but also be moved enough to join us for revelry and insanity.

Stranger things have happened.

And even if a bigger name plops down their song - if it is truly better, truly grips the sound of NO/JD, or truly takes the music in a direction further than we've imagined and makes us tingle with excitement - how bad can that actually be? It would inspire anyone less than satisfied with their own performance to maybe take a look back on their recording and see what they could have added or subtracted to make it even better. Losing in a contest isn't ever a reason to give up altogether.

And giving up out of uncertainity is not an option, either.

You can have all the quality gear in the world, but if you don't have the love of the music, it's never going to be better than what an interested fan can generate out of their sweat and tears. Fact.

Once again, stop expecting that much people to jump in the band wagon...

Of course competition will be harder this time as there will be 13 tracks on it instead of 22 (Community + CommunityEP), that IS the biggest issue.

If everybody was thinking the same way, we'll get absolutely no song.

It's called Community because it's done by 3 members of NOOL and voted by the members of NOOL and yes, bands HAVE to be registered on NOOL, and as WenOrder made it clear tonight, we do expect the bands to participate in NOOL...

We can't predict the future.. all we can say is that we'll do an album with 10 winning songs, 3 producer's picks (to replace the EP), David Potts' cover, 1 remix and 1 video.

There are plenty of opportunities to participate, there is the sleeve contest, the remix contest, the video contest, plus obviously the song contest...

Please don't let anything stop you from enjoying yourself doing a track, plus, you never know what can happen in the future.

Last time around I was myself shocked by some of the bands that didn't made the 15 finalists...

BTW, nothing says that BBC Manchester website is visited a lot ;)

No offence, but who was everyone on the last release of Community anyways?! Not regular posters, or anything. Only lot I knww are your lot? I certainly never felt like the original Community was indicative of this website whatsoever.

almanso, Nico Musinzki (La Fin De Tout, on the french forum) and Steve Campbell (sorry once again Steve)...

But I really wanted Known Pleasures to be on, hence why they did the hidden track, because they had to be on it, and they did a helluva job with their 2 covers on Community.

But others were lurkers, because beside the fact that I send an email to those who sent me a cover over the years (that's why Spiral of Silence was in the competition), those are all people who visited NOOL.

Problem is, you can't cover BLT, it's on Community 1, and that's one of the main rules ;)

Sorry, our little efforts were all Cubase, sticky tape and string  Serioulsy though we didn't do anything studio based and DNE was recorded and mixed in about 3 or 4 hours. We have access to a studio from the record company but they charge us for it's use so our submission will ahgain be cubase based.

This just prooves you can do quality without going to studio.

All 3 songs by Flight were top quality...

Totally agree - great tracks - and to reiterate, it's the imagination, innovation and love for the songs that people will vote for, not technical quality - reason being that few people here would be able to tell if a track was mixed on a pc or a fully digital, top of the range SSL... :thumb:

Don't be so sure, remeber there are a lot of people on this site who believe that it is a GOOD thing that New Order mime half their set....because it makes the gig sound like the record.

Well, yes...but the twat vote usually swings it in most democratic processes :D:D:D

Steve,

Print and tape this to your current mixer. It's the best I could do on short notice and limited budget. Works for me! :D

Seriously though, don't sell yourself short. Both your entries were top notch last time(as were many others).

P.S. I had trouble finding a photo of an SSL without some bastard sitting behind it with a big grin.

You should see the grin on my face :D

Every Neve and SSL ships with a free lemon, so you can take a bite to get the fookin grin off yer gob.

Actually I managed to do a fair bit of work on one of my tracks today and it sounds OK....always a good inspiration to continue :D

The only times I worked with an SSL, I was both playing and engineering - a confusing and laborious process... especially as I was (mainly) only working with accoustic instruments and playing eight different instruments on the same track... perhaps I could do a NO cover featuring Bodhran, Uileann Pipes, Banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass, tin whistles and vocals... or perhaps not...

Oh bugger it, I'm just not going to be able to submit a track, am I?

Dunno...sounds good to me.... Fine Time maybe?

only time I got near an SSl was in the BBC in Belshaft...60 or 72 channel...so big you need a skateboard to get from the patchbay to the other end. the BBc guy said.....I think we used it once....rest of the time we just run a stereo mic from the live room in here. TRAGIC

Who in the name of god has that much tracks in his tunes? :confused2:

You'd be surprised. 72 channels is unusual for sure. You see live desks in HUGE frame sizes (48,60,72,even larger)...but more often than not, tis is to enable the engineer to keep 2 bands mixes on his board at once (say, the support band are on 1-24, and the main band are on the others).

In a studio, you can use up channels pretty quick if you start using a lot of clever FX techniques, or if you start using psychoaccoustics, where one instrument can be split accross 3 or eve 4 channels. Iy may have 20 channels of drums too, I've seen kits with 3 mics on the kick drum and 4 on the snare (yes I did call the drummer a gimboid). Most people still work to 24 or 48 track tho. Whereas half a dozen channels of audio and as much MIDI as you can eat is fine in cubase or simillar, where you can do a lot of your mixing on the virtual instruments themselves (for instance, my drums pretty much leave the LM7 drum player, ready mixed, instead of having to go on 8 channels)

You lost me after "you'd be surprised"... :D

Gee, I once loaded Cubase and I had a hard time even trying to understand how it works.. and I'm a computer engineer damn it ;)

LOL Well I had it easy...I started on Cubase when it was simply a 64 track midi sequencer on the atari...so as it got more complex I went along with it. Also since it is a "virtual studio" these days, it kinda helps that I know my way around the real thing reasonably well.

MIDI should be a doddle for you....32kilobaud 8 bit (or 7 with parity for some functions, like note numbers for instance) opto-isolated network.

I'm afraid ns10s will never die... I will never succumb to the white coned shrill tweetered devils.

Wonder what they're replacing it with? Now that Gabriel is part owner in SSL, it's gotta be something nice.
