Unless you plan to use your song for something else.. I don't think anybody should be paying for studio for this.. it's not worth it, paying 1000$ for studio time when there is be only 1000 copies.

Sorry, our little efforts were all Cubase, sticky tape and string Serioulsy though we didn't do anything studio based and DNE was recorded and mixed in about 3 or 4 hours. We have access to a studio from the record company but they charge us for it's use so our submission will ahgain be cubase based.

Don't be so sure, remeber there are a lot of people on this site who believe that it is a GOOD thing that New Order mime half their set....because it makes the gig sound like the record.

Actually I managed to do a fair bit of work on one of my tracks today and it sounds OK....always a good inspiration to continue :D

only time I got near an SSl was in the BBC in Belshaft...60 or 72 channel...so big you need a skateboard to get from the patchbay to the other end. the BBc guy said.....I think we used it once....rest of the time we just run a stereo mic from the live room in here. TRAGIC

You'd be surprised. 72 channels is unusual for sure. You see live desks in HUGE frame sizes (48,60,72,even larger)...but more often than not, tis is to enable the engineer to keep 2 bands mixes on his board at once (say, the support band are on 1-24, and the main band are on the others).

In a studio, you can use up channels pretty quick if you start using a lot of clever FX techniques, or if you start using psychoaccoustics, where one instrument can be split accross 3 or eve 4 channels. Iy may have 20 channels of drums too, I've seen kits with 3 mics on the kick drum and 4 on the snare (yes I did call the drummer a gimboid). Most people still work to 24 or 48 track tho. Whereas half a dozen channels of audio and as much MIDI as you can eat is fine in cubase or simillar, where you can do a lot of your mixing on the virtual instruments themselves (for instance, my drums pretty much leave the LM7 drum player, ready mixed, instead of having to go on 8 channels)

LOL Well I had it easy...I started on Cubase when it was simply a 64 track midi sequencer on the atari...so as it got more complex I went along with it. Also since it is a "virtual studio" these days, it kinda helps that I know my way around the real thing reasonably well.

MIDI should be a doddle for you....32kilobaud 8 bit (or 7 with parity for some functions, like note numbers for instance) opto-isolated network.
