Did you happen to see Bob Mould's call for videos for "Paralyzed" on the Yep Roc site? I missed that one, but it sure looked cool in my head.
Maybe he'll do it again.
I think the publicity is a good thing. Plus the fact that just about every cover submitted for 'Community' was of very high quality - both the songs that made it to the release and those that didn't.
So what if someone has access to a high profile studio? Doesn't mean that they're more talented or will produce a better cover from an artistic point of view. Sprinkle sugar on a dog turd and it's still a turd. Imagination, innovation and a love for the song covered is what's going to matter in this competition.
Kudos to Nic, Mike and Alejo for giving everyone another chance to appear on a second great compilation and good luck to all NOOLers entering any part of the competition(s)

As for the exposure on the BBC, it's a good thing, though I can see the problems with the voting etc...
Maybe you should limit the voting to people who have contributed something to the site over the past 5/6 years? Say, 100 posts or something like that?
Just an idea.
Remember Shug, the amount of people voting for Community 1 wasn't that big... I think Flight had something like 200 votes for their song.
The voting rules are not written YET, but we'll find a way...

I'm more imagining a kid or fan of the band who hasn't been otherwise bothered to find the NOOL site who has sat around playing his or her own covers of the band who might just see that and think "Huh, awesome" and actually be bothered to not only submit their track for competition but also be moved enough to join us for revelry and insanity.
Stranger things have happened.
And even if a bigger name plops down their song - if it is truly better, truly grips the sound of NO/JD, or truly takes the music in a direction further than we've imagined and makes us tingle with excitement - how bad can that actually be? It would inspire anyone less than satisfied with their own performance to maybe take a look back on their recording and see what they could have added or subtracted to make it even better. Losing in a contest isn't ever a reason to give up altogether.
And giving up out of uncertainity is not an option, either.
You can have all the quality gear in the world, but if you don't have the love of the music, it's never going to be better than what an interested fan can generate out of their sweat and tears. Fact.

I still don't think it's fair to pit us, most of whom have not a lot of gear....against anyone with multimegabucks....hired session players, paid producers, the works. might not happen, but if it does I will be furious.
I didn;t say I was giving up (did anyone out and out say that?), I just feel like I would if I thought Iwas going karting with all you guys, and now I find out Nigel Mansell can bring his Newman-Haas along and join in.....you think...not much point in me shaving a tenth off my laptime in a kart if fuckstick's gonna be going 30secs quiker.....no point bothering to actually produce and mix the tracks if someone else is always gonna win through with better gear....may as well just leave them raw.

Seriously though - with this new revelation, I'm not sure how I feel about submitting a track. Maybe if this aspect of the competition was made clear when the competition was announced it would've been better? As Tim suggested, is it really fair to call it 'Community'?

Once again, stop expecting that much people to jump in the band wagon...
Of course competition will be harder this time as there will be 13 tracks on it instead of 22 (Community + CommunityEP), that IS the biggest issue.
If everybody was thinking the same way, we'll get absolutely no song.
It's called Community because it's done by 3 members of NOOL and voted by the members of NOOL and yes, bands HAVE to be registered on NOOL, and as WenOrder made it clear tonight, we do expect the bands to participate in NOOL...
We can't predict the future.. all we can say is that we'll do an album with 10 winning songs, 3 producer's picks (to replace the EP), David Potts' cover, 1 remix and 1 video.
There are plenty of opportunities to participate, there is the sleeve contest, the remix contest, the video contest, plus obviously the song contest...
Please don't let anything stop you from enjoying yourself doing a track, plus, you never know what can happen in the future.
Last time around I was myself shocked by some of the bands that didn't made the 15 finalists...
BTW, nothing says that BBC Manchester website is visited a lot ;)

You can REALLY forget the other competitions BTW, no one with a camcorder can compete with someone who has access to a fookin post-production suite, same with the art....scribbled drawings are gonna lose to the guy who comes up with a 5 views mock up of his sleeve on a beach or something using his £20,000 of macs.

A mate of mine has made entire tracks out of tickling and poking his girlfriend within range of his £1.99 goosenack mic.
sodding awesome too, he spends the time and gets every instrument he needs by clever soundforge usage. Very NiN sounding.

almanso, Nico Musinzki (La Fin De Tout, on the french forum) and Steve Campbell (sorry once again Steve)...
But I really wanted Known Pleasures to be on, hence why they did the hidden track, because they had to be on it, and they did a helluva job with their 2 covers on Community.
But others were lurkers, because beside the fact that I send an email to those who sent me a cover over the years (that's why Spiral of Silence was in the competition), those are all people who visited NOOL.
