Remasters/reissues...

OK, so...Rhino has put out double-disc remastered versions of the first few Cure albums. Do you suppose they might do this with NO at some point? Perhaps a second disc for each album with the original 12" mixes. Seriously, these days everything eventually gets remastered & reissued.

What I really want is 8:46 version of The Perfect Kiss on CD!

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. I believe someday it's going to happen.

I like to think that they still hold some integrity and therefore they will not give permission to reissue their albums. But then again

At best remastering is just copying the tape again. At worst it is a way to shove this years trendy compression settings onto all your back catalogue so some tard of a record exec isn't confused by one of his artist having a slightly different sound.

i would much rather hear remixes.....not DJ style ones where the only connection is that the hi-hat was made from a burst of Bernard's sibillance...but literally putting the multi back on the machine and seeing what kind of sensible mix comes out using more modern studio gear. But that's only for the sake of accademic interest. I think the whole remastering thing is over done by far.

All I can say is, the first time I heard International I thought the tracks had more punch, especially with the bass.

If Rhino ever do reissues like that, it won't be for a while. They would probably wait 'til NO has a career lull, like with The Cure. They haven't even finished that series yet. We're talking a couple of years at least.

This whole remastering lark is becoming a pain in the arse though - how many times have certain artists kept on re-issuing their back catalogue and each time there has been this spurious "digitally remastered" thingy on the cover art? Thus the diehard fans who have everything feel co-erced to buy everything all over again.

I certainly haven't been gullible enough to do this with - say - New Order's recent Warner reissues for example - mainly cos the quality of their reissues has been so piss poor (Low Life!!! LOW LIFE!!! The Get Ready Red Stripe cover to Brotherhood!!! I mean REALLY!!!) it's criminal. Moreover - they're not really remastered are they? Even the stuff on Retro claims to have been "remastered" but I'm not so certain.

Besides....you win some and lose some with remastering - it's one of those things where the overall sound / depth of an original recording can be rendered so flat and sterile or stripped of so much top / bottom end all it does is fuck everything up. Remastering is no guarantee that the sound will be perfect - it seldom is. I have heard some "remastered" CD tracks where there is still so much murk and the instruments are so muddy in the production - with only the vocals up front - that it beggars belief. I think the whole thing is a con on a gigantic scale. I wouldn't buy it given the choice. It's been said so many times before anyway - nothing beats the sound of pristine vinyl played on a decent hi-fi.

it's true, other than a bit of noise reduction, what else CAN you do before you start breaking the original. having said that, when it comes to specific productions masters, New Order were often let down, Low life and Brotherhood for instance on vynil, are pretty shallow cuts, very light on their tootsies. But the holy "digital remastering" process is nothing to do with that. Any engineer will tell you there's nota whole lot you can do with a stereo reel. Andmake no mistake, that the "re-mastering" we're talking about is lifting the original stero master into a computer, it has nothing to do with remaking the track, because you could never get within light years of the original.

Normally when I try to improve the sound of a track for whatever reason, I just throw it in Soundforge. I make it louder, boost the bass and maybe expand the stereo image a bit.

I've heard good things about the Rolling Stones remasters. Haven't heard them myself, but someone told me you can hear sounds that were absolutely buried in the originals. But then again, remastering is a tricky business. If it's not done with finesse, you end up with a ham-fisted mix of sounds that seem to be fighting each other for space.
