He mentions 'buying' love in Vanishing Point ("he buys love to sell tomorrow")and also in GIAUE ("real love can't be bought") So in the past he writes about someone buying it, but nowadays reckons that can't be done...maybe a shift in attitude steming from his personal life?
that's what I'm thinking too, Chris.. that these lyrics and metaphors from different songs and times are used differently can be signifying some shifts in attitude or feelings. In Loveless, Barney was singing of feeling that he felt he had no way in/out (wall with no doors).. but in WFTSC there is a way out, through the door.
Having read your comments, I just realized too that Barney sings of buying love also in Crystal. "Here comes love, it's like honey, You can't buy it with money"
so.. 3 songs so far, talking about buying/selling love.. Vanishing Point, Crystal, GIAUE
2 songs using the wall/door metaphor
Loveless, WFTSC
Gonna go look for some more..
