cool. :D Heart and Soul against Wilderness was the hardest of the lot today.

I have done my duty :) Although tough one there between Isolation and Transmission but in the end decided to go with T.

i agree; that was a tough one. but i also chose the latter.

See those threads entitled "The JD Cup - First Round" that tell you which songs are in the match? It'll be there.

Easiest one was LWTUA VS IA.

Hardest was Trans Vs Isol, but had to go with Isol

Yeah, that was the beauty of The Fall Cup, sometimes there were some easy choices, and sometimes not, I for one don't even have Wings in my Top Ten (more like Top 15). Just slightly irritated in the JD Cup cause two of my very fave tracks went head to head straight off (Transmission v. Isolation).. Ah well.......

So far all my votes are in the majority stream

Good idea this TIM.Will you be doing a PERNOD CUP for NEW ORDER?:thumb:

Nope, nothing here... is it a poll?

See this thread? Close it, and look approximately 14 threads below it in the list. There you will see the first five polls. And if you can't find those, then you probably wouldn't be able to choose one of the songs in any case, would you?

sounds like a complete load of bollocks!

it was reasonalby easy so far. i think i went with the majority vote on most songs. the next round is bound to be much tougher.

Why are so many songs 'bye'...

It's a shame we don't have a rating scheme on NOOL pools; i.e. a score vote for poll options of 1-5 (1; very good, 2; good, 3; average, 4; bad 5; very bad. (Or Vice Versa) ); then we could have a much more detailed and interesting picture of what people think the best JD/NO songs are...

45-19=26

26/2=13

13+19=32

32 is a factor of 2

Wasn't easy that, some very tough decisions to be made, and I managed to pick 4 losers out of 5!

hey, i'm no math man. i have no idea why it needs to be 32... if there are 45 joy division songs, have 44 in the first round with one bye. oh, but then the third round is fucked... hrm. i think i may see. 32 is the closest number to 45 that is divisible by two all the way down, eh? is that right? i dunno... fuck it. do it however you please, ain't gonna change my world.

still, 19 byes... were they random? because autosuggestion sucks. har.

and don't flip me off, you old monkey... i'm just confused. fuck math.

I skipped the At A Later Date poll, I don't think I've heard that song.

jesse steichen wrote: i have no idea why it needs to be 32

It has to be a factor of 2 so that as the competition progresses you end up with 2 finalists

2 finalist = 4 semi-finalists = 8 quarter finalists etc.

(apologies for being a maths {math if you're American} geek)

as expected it was a bit tougher this time round. there were a couple where i did not side with the majority vote.

The second set of matches is proving to be much more interesting than the first - proper cup drama this time... Can't believe At A Later Date has so many votes, or that I Remember Nothing is doing so badly... The tension... Are we going to have extra time in the event of a draw? Or a penalty shoot-out with randomly chosen NOOLers having to vote one way of the other?

Snorri xxx

The third round is even tougher - how do you split Candidate and Novelty or The Only Mistake and Walked in Line? Good to see some votes for Atrocity Exhibition - even if it does have no hope of winning.

Komakino is out?! :banghead:

And Isolation! Only one that I have voted for has gone out so far - I Remember Nothing... and that wasn't a big disappointment... Looking forward to the second round draw - could be some big clashes there - and Atmosphere vs Atrocity Exhibition will be an interesting one - I reckon against most other tracks AE would get through...

Second Round draw will be posted at about 8.05pm tonight. As you say, some potential big clashes!

Atmosphere vs. New Dawn Fades made my heart weep! Both have such succulent performance on them, but deep in my gut I knew who had to get my vote.

Good pairing! Great match for a duel.

Small mistake:

It should be These Days instead of Komakino in round 2.

Why do we have to make choices in life? Atmosphere vs New Dawn Dades Voted for New Dawn Fades; balanced it at 50/50 now.

I voted for New Dawn fades but its still 50-50. Someone must have nipped in for Atmosphere in the meantime.

Disorder V. Shadowplay's an even tougher call.

ARgh, Disorder vs. Shadowplay. That's hard... chose Disorder because it's got a little more power. Play that song ever when I have to get up on my feet again. In whatever condition I am.

some difficult ones coming up now!

Warsaw going out to A means to an end was a surprise to me

Just cast a vote to put Transmission in the lead over LWTUA 2-1....God knows that won't last, I can't dismiss the first JD song I ever heard though.

Atmosphere scraped through even if both songs are ace. Didn't expect Disorder to beat Shadowplay. The No Love Lost match is a toughy.

24 all between Transmission and LWTUA as I type this.

What tension!

LWTUA goes at only the second round! Al Jarvis cast the winning vote for Transmission in sudden death extra time. Four more matches later, after I've finished watching You Are What You Eat on the telly.

Quite odd to see LWTUA out already but I did vote for Transmission too. Didn't expect These Days to win, and I wanted Colony to beat NLL.

The Sound of Music vs Twenty Four Hours! Two of my favorite songs! Took me ten minutes switching between the tracks to really fully make my mind up. Twenty Four won it, though... the music is just so tight on that song.

i voted LWTUA (my favourite song), but i knew it would be a close one. sorry to see it go, but the people have spoken.

if you wouldn't mind, don't let voting end on weekends anymore. i rarely touch the internet on weekends. those of us who waste time at work on this site would agree... this is a weekday activity for several of us. thanks.

Why not vote when the poll opens then, rather than when it end? They are online for more than 48 hours. The next four 3rd round matches will be posted at 8pm tomorrow night (GMT), and will finish some time on Saturday morning, as we are in the studio Friday night.

What is going on ?

Novelty is beating These Days comfortably.

Do I (and the other These Days voters) have different ears to everyone else?

nah, Novelty vs These Days is a tough one - I voted Novelty but I love TD as well... Having said that, come on people, vote for Insight... Please? Couldn't bear to see it go out at this stage... Although it would be nice to see one of the earlier 'punkier' numbers get through to the last rounds...

Is Wembley going to be finished in time for the final?

Are people voting for 'Joy Division' or 'Joy Division songs that New Order have done'?!

Surprised to see 24Hrs is gonna make the final. Had an easy enough route admittedly but is this mainly down to its Manc Arena appearance and the fact it's fresh in everyone's minds?!

Never really thought of it as 'Standout' JD before.

Atmosphere is out?! Gah! And I prefer Novelty over These Days. I seem to prefer the live version of TD over the studio.

Good question. I've always thought of it as being one of the best of the non-single tracks, but I guess that many people have it fresh in their minds at the moment. It has had an easy run though, compared to Transmission, which has had to see off all the favourites!

I think Twenty Four Hours had a really easy run....I mean I voted for it the whole way, but I would always choose say Disorder or Decades over it.

The song I was most surprised at was The Eternal - I think it's one of JD's most beautiful songs, and couldn't believe it went out so early.

Well I can't believe Transmission went the whole way to the final. It's way down on my list. It took out Love Will Tear Us Apart, Decades and Dead Souls (my personal #1) FFS.

As for 24 Hours, I have a tape somewhere of John Peel playing it on his show and saying it's his favourite JD track.

oldmonkey wrote: Why not vote when the poll opens then, rather than when it end?

because i'm not on here all the time at work. is there even a way to be alerted as to when a poll opens? think not. if it's going to end on a saturday or sunday, why don't you just make it end monday instead? seems only fair. i am being disenfranchised! voter fraud!

i'm really not trying to complain, you're doing a good job, but there have been several times where a poll closed before i was even aware of it. it's not for a lack of looking...

i hope that, should you run the new order cup, the voting will not end on saturdays or sundays. people want to vote, and the way you are doing it does cut some people off.

I'm nothing but disappointed. My fav of JD has lost

Interesting competition anyway ; good idea whatever the odd result !

although 24hrs is one of the best tracks, I still think it only got to the final because of it's recent outing.

I have the feeling that the votes were greatly favourable to those songs NO did cover recently. Nobabely - erm, sorry, I mean frankly -, is Transmission really the best JD song ever? I can't believe it. As far as I'm concerned, I'm bored like shit of hearing it.

Personally, I think it all think it worked out quite right. Transmission is my personal favourite, and certainly is one of their greatest songs.

Remember they've also played LWTUA and Atmosphere quite a lot recently as well!

I said it was the best. You said Isolation was more interesting. They're not one and the same, are they?!

'Interesting' does not equate to 'better'.

The Saville Sountrack was 'interesting'. The likes of Ceremony and Temptation are infinitely 'better' though.

I know what stirs the masses at gigs, and it's defo Transmission over Isolation.

Although it would be nice to get the latter back, if only for a berluddy change.

'Interesting' does not equate to 'better'.

Of course not. Blame the lack of precision in my argumentation on the fact that English is not my mother tongue.

We could debate for years upon what is meant by "best". For you it seems to be related to public enthusiasm at gigs (which would make Blue Monday one of NO's best songs although many hardcore fans are bored to death of hearing it). For me it's more related to the creativity and subtlety of the interpretation. Both criteria are certainly valid.

My point is that the voters in the JD Cup seem to have selected the JD song that had the best (according to your criterion) rendition at NO gigs rather than the best (according to my criterion) JD song ever. It's interesting to observe how short-term experiences can have more influence on people's judgement than long-term memories.

Not convinced by this entirely. You're saying that Transmission won because New Order only started playing it in 2001 (short-term) but Isolation should've won because of a longer-term memory (New Order started playing it 'interestingly' in just 1998, hardly long-term?!).

At the end of the day, surely everyone knew Tranmish was gonna walk it after it just pipped LWTUA. Barney Army even started a thread with this theme well before the final.

Am sure if a straw poll of JD tracks were done away from this site, LWTUA and Atmosphere will top it (take the Peel's All Time 50 in the year 1999/2000 as a benchmark) but people here are probably sick to the death of these tracks after all the live offerings over the years. Transmission still sounds like a breath of fresh air to most.

Shoulda been Decades.

Now, Tim - what about a Warsaw cup?

Only kidding.

That's the whole beauty of the cup format, two favourites get drawn together, one goes out, the road to glory is easier for those faves that have easier rides... I think the tracks that got through to the later stages are a pretty representative selection of most people's top 5 or so tracks... Maybe if we had a league format with each of the top 20 or so songs playing each other twice, with points for wins, etc. .... Only joking...!

something that is as subjective as a song can hardly be given the tag of 'best' or 'worst.' as you say above, people have different criteria for what constitutes best and worst, and i think you're spot on.

That's not exactly what I mean. To me, short-term refers to recent live renditions by NO (and Isolation is in this category) while long-term refers to the original JD versions. If I had to make a "short-term" vote, I would probably have voted for Isolation, but I understand why Transmission would be much more popular amongst the voters. What I mean is that Joy Division have certainly made much better songs than Transmission (whatever subjective "better" may be) but that people's choice is very much influenced by the recent live rendition of a very limited number of songs, leaving the largest part of JD's back catalogue in the shadow.

New Order's live performances of JD songs had no bearing on the way I voted. 24 Hours and Transmission have always been consistent favourites for me.
