Of Course You Are Welcome to Choose Neither

Inspired by the recent thread from Captain Obvious.

My apologies if this is redundant. I know this type of poll has been done to death.

Let's have it right about World in Motion. It's fucking brilliant.

Look at ANY country's World Cup song before or since - crap. Musically, World in Motion is great, while still retaining the essential ingredients of a footie song - the football players taking part and the singalong chorus that drunk people can remember the words to.

And look at it in an historical context too - England was fucked at the time and nobody had any pride in the country. World in Motion had just the right balance of piss-taking humour and national pride to lift the spirits of the country and get everyone behind the team for the World cup.

World in Motion is one of New Order's finest moments. Only they could get through it with their image untarnished. Look how many other bands have tried the same stunt and come out of it looking like dickheads.

I'm not the greatest living Englishman (that's Keith Allen, as everyone knows) and I'm no football fan either. The true power of that song was that people like me, who are not particularly proud of being English (and certainly wasn't at the time WIM was first released) and don't really care about football could sing along and feel good about something English for a change.

such a good thing is a fun, catchy tune. WIM is a novelty song without the fun, catchy part. it's no 'three lions,' i tell you.

i have to agree with biggie. It so obvious that their taking a piss and having fun during wim. like both songs, but wim is more memorable.

love world in motion. brilliant. such a good thing is the one and only truly rank NO song, the only one close to being as bad is young offender. i hate you such a good thing you steaming pile of lavvy.

Neither is cap - WIM needs to be looked at in the context of football songs - in those terms it's miles ahead of anything before or since, maybe not NOs best effort, but still an enjoyable song and brings back some great memories of that summer and that World Cup... Voted SAGT cos its a nice uplifting, simple song, but there's nothing rong with either... Liar on the other hand, IS crap...

Absolutely spot on. Football was on it's arse in 1990.

I had the misfortune to hear this song in the clubs of Costa del Chav around that time and it immediately lifted everyones spirits, and for 5 minutes the fighting stopped and the knuckledraggers all loved each other....then went out and battered the Dutch

It's plain naive just to judge WIM solely on it's musical merits.

Ich liebe World in Motion, but it always reminds me of Peter Beardsley, Steve McMahon and Des Walker. and that can't be good.

WIM was a class song that deserves it's success and high held esteem.

‘World in Motion’ of course. The first New Order single I ever bought!!!! I remember, a good few years back, meeting John Barnes in a nightclub in Newcastle and debating whether or not to mention the ‘rap’ to him. Bottled it in the end though

Classic New Order New Order song except for the rap bit. Came out when we were expecting our first child. Sure people hate it but it will always have a special place in my life.

Doesn't one of the remixes on the second 12" dump Johnny Barnes doing his glacially slow rap and the rest of the england tean doing their, ahem, "singing". Not uncoincidentally, it's my favourite version...

Mind you, the chorus is kept intact. Alas.
