New Order and drug use?

I never really thought of Joy Division as a real drug influenced band, but then you hear tracks by New Order where they were getting more and more dance oriented, like "Confusion" and "Blue Monday", along with the opening of the Hacienda, and from what I understand acid played a part in a lot of it. I know I read an interview with Barney where he said they stayed up 72 hours straight on drugs while recording at one point. Obviously they were still functioning and the music wasnt suffering. What's everyone's opinion on this subject?

New Order were (are?) musicians dabbling in drugs. Up to them, after all they're adults.

When they become junkies dabbling in music, then there's a problem.

Doubt it was acid. As for the whole subject of drugs, they are consenting adults, it's up to them. The drugs contributed to some fucking great music though!

Believe me i know from my many nights at the Hacienda both Barney and hooky were doing shitloads of drugs and they never needed any encouragment from Shaun or Bez , most of Factory were doing drugs coke , weed , ecstacy , acid , but hey as you said they were adults and knew the score , never witnessed Steve or Gillian doing anything though

In the book "True Faith" they mention acid use more than a couple of times.

It might have contributed negatively to their live show though, since Barney has to read to the teleprompter so much, haha!

Yes. New Order used to take a lot of drugs. Just like they used to drink lots of beer. Eat loads of chips, chew loads of sandwiches, smoke lots of fags and make loads of decent records. :banghead:

John Lydon: "New Order does more drugs than the Grateful Dead."

If you have the live version of Temptation from 1981 - Barney looks drugged to the eyeballs.

It was rampant, celebrate it. The music would bear no comparison without it. Look no further than Technique - recorded in Ibiza around the Summer of Love, you can imagine the milieu.

He was recovering from his botched job on "Ceremony" and hoping that Gillian would get the keyboard part right for "Temptation" just when he realized 'Denial" would've been a fine set closer. But fortunately, they played the Taboo 'core.

That book is notable only for its incessant inaccuracy. It is hopelessly wrong in so many places!

There were some fuckin great interviews in '98 and 2001. There was a 20 page feature in Select I think which mentioned some of the acid stories during the making of PC&L, Barney in a white lab coat in the studio telling everyone what they should be doing. Classic. John Lydon came out with his famous quote on the '89 tour of America when they played with The Sugarcubes and Public Image Ltd (amongst others)

There were plenty of other stories as well, I'm with the "so fuck" brigade, we've alll done it at various stages why should they be any different. The tongue in cheek "Don't Do Drugs" T-shirt worn by Barney for The Roxy appearance of True Faith shows their sense of humour.

Musicians who do drugs?

I'd like a list of musicians who don't do drugs.

And I bet their music would be fucking gash.

It would be fucking Athlete or something equally piss-weak.
