You might have noticed that since the last week, NOOL had performace issues for some reason that I can't really figure out.

So I'm trying a few things to find out why the website is "jamming" so much, means taking forever to load and stuff like that.

Either we are getting DoS attacks (denial of service), or there is a serious issue with the server.

So don't worry if you see weird things happening, it's me trying to fix things. One of the solution MIGHT be to clean the message database which is getting very big (5 years of messages!) and that would probably help a lot, not to delete them, but move them into an archive database that would be searchable in the future.

But I'm still trying a few tricks.

Worst part is, I didn't change anything on NOOL in a lot of time, so I just don't get why this is happening, only link I can see is the new Community website which is using the same database, so maybe it has a link, or maybe not.

What are you getting from the logs man?

I can tell you it was zinging along at 12noon GMT, and fucked by 12:30 try and grep through them for that period and see what turns up.

I have cleaned the database and moved old threads into archive.. let see how it goes.

I'll eventually do a search engine to see the old threads, read only of course..

So right now is the 6 last months of threads.

If that isn't the problem, I'll move them back...

I'm working on tuning the database, so basically, it should enhance the performance.

From what I've seen, the problem was queries maxing the CPU of the server, so I had to find which queries and make them faster.

I didn't touch those in a long time, but it seems recently it started to be a problem, especially in the forum.

It seems much faster, but it's late at night on a week-end, let's wait and see ;)

Er, but when you say it's the last six months of threads, have you removed everything that was started over six months ago, or those that haven't been added to in the past six months?!

Cos our Fantasy Footie thread, which was a stickie in BCD, seems to have disappeared entirely ... which makes me think you went for the former option!!

actually that thread was active in the last six months. perhaps it just isn't sticky anymore, and will probably be found somwhere on like page six.

Well maybe you should let it ride for a wee while to see what overall effect it has...assuming the footballers can handle a short recess.

I wonder if ram is an issue, windows can be intensely stupid in it's management of physical ram and pagefiles....maybe if it was loading a BIG Database it would swamp the ram, then need to swap out again to actually DO aything with it.

Did you find anything at all at the time I mentioned?

Ram is not an issue... I have 1 gb on the server.. it's the cpu load.

I already asked for a better server, if they don't charge me for setup, it should be up very soon...

surely there is a broad Dos equivalent to....

cat /var/log/NOOL.log|grep "07:00" or even a windows version of "tail" ?

I can imagine how large they are...you should see the ones for the forgotten backwater that is slightlynarrow.co.uk

I didn't so much mean running out of ram, as getting it's knickers in a twist with large files and swapping.....I aint been near a server edition of windowsXP but XP-pro, SHITS itse'f after I close a game, or cubase, and will stubornly do fuck all until it gets it's head together....like loading a bloody icon on the desktop may as well be asking it to solve fermat's last theorem.

Can you get access to detailed stats for things like disc access and ram/cpu usage?

It MUSt be somehow important that it receives client to server data perfectly well.....but simply does not respond.

Community -2 and the newest -C2-podCasts must be generating lots of volume.

The podcasts aren't hosted on the same machine!

oh. my mistake. thanks. thought there was mention a few days ago about all the extra traffic traffic that community - 2 community -2 and the podcasts was generating.

pls. any chance of changing the real name or nationality in the profile.
